110 Years Ago – 1914
The Amherst Band boys dispensed hospitality was a lavish hand on Tuesday afternoon when nearly 2,000 people from Remsen, Marcus, Germantown and the entire countryside accepted their invitation to attend a picnic the grove near German Lutheran Church.
A yield of 65 bushels to the acre of wheat was reported by J.L. Jacoby who lives near Smithland, IA The yield was made in a 12 acre patch.
While Frances, the 8 year old son of Ed Delaney was visiting in the country at Joe Carey’s, he fell from a shed to a cement walk which rendered him unconscious. The boys head was badly injured and his body bruised.
The bridge near the Heline farm east of Marcus on the Hawkeye Highway will be taken out within the next few days to be replaced by a concrete span.
105 Years Ago -1919
Cally Ellis arrived in Marcus Wednesday evening having been absent just one year doing his duty as a soldier in the American army. Cally will resume his former position in the First National Bank. With the return this week of Mr. Ellis and Silas Means, there remain but a few others to return.
Lighting during Sunday morning’s storm struck the old hay and cattle barn of the Joseph Hobbs farm, following the hay carrier track to where they hay fork hung descended from it to the mow below, where there had been several loads of new hay setting it a fire. With the removing of some of the hay, the fire was put out with very little damage done.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Geringer are the parents of a son born to them Monday, July 14. This is the fifth child and Geringers having two daughter and three sons.
The sum of $25,000 was paid by L.M. Miller for the 48 acre track of land owned by C. Flanagan on the western edge of Marcus. The place is well improved with a modern house and a good barn.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Among the Marcus scout who are attending the Rotary Scout Camp north of LeMars this week are Howard Glanagan, Marien Garvin, Floyd Simons, Vernon Simons, Lyle Birch, Dale Barnes, Joseph Broblik, Harold Booth, Lorne Willey, John Clarkson, Phillip Delaney, Russell and Emil Anderson.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles French are the proud parents of a son born Tuesday morning.
As Mrs. A.P. Anderson was doing her washing last Wednesday when she had the misfortune to have her hand drawn into the electric wringer and torn so badly it was necessary for the doctor to administer several stitches.
Mark Flanagan, son of Mr. & Mrs. C.L. Flanagan is fast gaining reknown as one of the leading left handed pitchers in American’s famous sport, baseball. His career began two years ago when he was attending Trinity College. Since then he has rapidly ascended the ladder of fame playing first with Mitchell, SD, then with the Tri State Sioux City and this year he has been transferred to the Mississippi Valley and is playing with the Cedar Rapids Buns.
Mr. & Mrs. Guy Rae are rejoicing over the arrival of a son at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee, Tuesday July 15.
Robert, son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Galles was the victim of a Fourth of July accident which might have resulted ver serious.
95 Years Ago -1929
Mr. & Mrs. Felix Treinen are the parents of a baby boy born in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Joseph Hamilton received word that his aged mother in Belfast, Ireland passed away the previous week. Mrs Hamilton was over 80 years old at the time of her death.
The 4H club girls will hold a meeting with Miss Rose Addy as hostess on Thursday, July 11.
Miss Margarte Voelker, who recently returned from Berlin and Paris is vising her sister.
Mrs. L.M. Woods and Catherine left Monday for Des Moines where arrangements were made for Catherine to enter Drake University.
85 Years Ago -1939
Rev. C.W. Samuelson was taken ill Monday afternoon and has been confined to his home since that time. He is reported as improving and will be soon able to be around again.
A deal was completed this week by which Mrs. Bess Nelson of Humboldt purchased the Marcus Hotel from Mrs. Mary Leonard. The deal included the building, lot and furnishings.
Dorothy Quirin and Lucille Barnes attended a sorority house party of the Cedar Falls State Teachers College at Spirit Lake from Friday until Thursday.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Funeral services for Joseph Donnor were conducted by Rev A. Eldon Hoskins, pastor of Christ’s Church in Cleghorn.
Fire of unknown origin brought complete destruction to a corn crib and barn on the Oscar Klingborg farm located 13 miles south of Cleghorn Saturday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Rasmus and daughter Harriet, arrived from San Pedro, CA Monday afternoon. They will located in Cherokee.
Nancy Ziegler was honored on her birthday July 13th by her aunt Mrs. Claude Grey.
75 Years Ago -1949
Joan Berger, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Will Berger of Marcus, was one of the two girls selected in Iowa to attend the American Youth Federation Leadership training camp at Shelby, Michigan.
The incorporation of the Marcus Fair association have called the first stockholders meeting for the next Wednesday evening, July 27 in the Municipal building in Marcus.
Howard McConnell, Marcus student at Morningside College, Sioux City, has been placed on the spring term honor roll.
Mrs. Anna Carey, 67, was struck by a Sioux City Transit Company bus near 20th and Pierce Street in Sioux City. She was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was treated for an arm injury.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst Township will observe its Diamond anniversary with two special services on July 25.
Emil Ebert, Marcus carpenter will lose his right eye as the result of a fishing accident Monday evening.
Marjoir Main and Percy Killbride come to the Marland Theatre here this Sunday and Monday in another of their famous series, “Pa & Ma Kettle at Home.”
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Galigan are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday July 13 in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Cleghorn’s annual two days celebration under the sponsorship of the town’s American Legion post starts this Friday with a lot of entertainment and fun planned for people of that community.

Funeral services for Mrs. William Nitzschke, 52 who died Wednesday at her home south of Remsen after a long illness, will be Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen.
Mrs. Margaret Pearson of Marcus was reunited with her sister, Mrs. Gertrude Peterson of Santa Monica, CA when M.C. Bill Leyden surprised Mrs. Peterson as she attended a telecast of “It Could Be You” The sisters had not seen each other for more than two years until the television show.
Tuesday evening, July 14 Mrs. Hattie Glines was honored by her fellow telephone operators at a steak supper in Storm Lake.
Harry Nelson of Akron has leased the Ellis Holmes building on Main Street adjoining the Dixson 66 station and is in the process of installing equipment for a laundromat.
Mary Ellen Kelly was honored Sunday afternoon, July 12 at an autograph party at the Sioux City Auditorium.

Elred McIntire, Marcus farmer is in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City with a compound fracture of the left leg, the result of a fall from a ladder Tuesday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. John Schneider of Remsen are parents of a daughter born Monday, July 13 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
A second Marcus tavern has been issued a license to sell liquor and can now take care of its customers in that area. The Dew Drop Inn, operated by Shorty Brownmiller is the new cocktail lounge.
The Marcus Mets took four games Tuesday evening form Orange City on the Marcus field.
55 Years Ago -1969
Bass Nelson was hostess Tuesday afternoon to an anniversary party marking her 30 years as owner and operator of the Marcus hotel.
Work has been started on the construction of another addition to the facilities of the Marcus Fair Grounds. It is a 30 x 70 foot utility building, located just to the north of the Legion shelter house and adjacent to the picnic grounds.
Lance Corporal Dale Johnson is hospitalized in Viet Nam where he has undergone surgery for the removal of shrapnel from one of his legs, according to work received by his mother, Mrs. Norma Johnson of rural Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs Bruce Graff of Des Moines are parents of a son born Friday, July 11.
Army Staff Sergeant James Ruden, son of Mr. & Mrs Arnold Ruden of Marcus received the Air Medal May 25 in Viet Nam. Staff Sgt. Ruden earned the award for meritorious service while participating in areal flight in support of ground operations in Viet Nam.
50 Years Ago -1974
Marilyn Ferrin of Marcus is one of eleven candidates for the Cherokee County Fair which will be held at the fairgrounds south of Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs Ric Collins of Sioux Center are the parents of their first child a baby girl born July 11.
The Marcus Madrigal, under the direction of Miss Kinda McClain, will be traveling to Columbus, Ohio July 28-30 to perform at the International Lutheran Laymen’s League Convention.
The children of Mr. & Mrs Raymond Quamen invite friends and relatives to an open house in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of their parents on Sunday, August 18, at their home on Gibson Flates.

Arthur Dorr, 86 died unexpectedly Friday, July 13 at his home on Cedar St. in Marcus.
Tom Kohout, President of K-Products Inc, of Orange City, has announced plans to build an additional manufacturing facility at Marcus in the near future.
Mr. & Mrs Bucky Tentinger are the proud parents of their first baby, a daughter born July 15.
Nathalie Auffret, a French foreign exchange student of the NACEL Summer Homestay program is staying at the Marvin Schwarz home in rural Marcus.
The Marcus Rescue Unit was called to the new Jim Nielsen building site when rafters collapsed injuring two employees of the Puhrmann Construction Company.’
Mr. Guy Rae is solving the gasoline shortage by pedaling around on his three- wheel bike.
40 Years Ago –1984
There will be a family farewell potluck for Mr. & Mrs,. Tom Rubel and family at the Marcus Shelterhouse on Monday.
Mrs. Ellis Holmes of Marcus passed away late Monday afternoon at SVMH in Cherokee after a long illness.
Edward Buddenhage, 78, passed away Saturday at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City.
