110 Years Ago – 1914
C.W. Dorr informs the News that the amount of $325 which was subscribed by the businessmen of Marcus for the purpose of oiling the streets, has been collected and will cover the estimated cost of the improvement.
J.A. Hamad, who has conducted a repair shoe shop on Main Street for the past year, has decided to open up a shoe store which will be a new enterprise for the city.
Marcus citizens have this week shown their loyal spirit by pledging twenty five automobiles which will form the boosters excursion to adjoining cities and towns next week. The businessmen the Marcus band and a bunch of Y.W. singers will go along to advertise the Chautaqua.
Christina Lundquist and Maude Barr are chaperoning a party of young girls at a camping party at Mill Creek from Wednesday to Friday.
105 Years Ago -1919
S.M. Wixcel was in Sioux City on Tuesday during the excitement of the gun duel when James Britton detective killed a notorious bandit and later died from his wounds. Mr. Wixcel visited the scene of the tragedy and says that the city lost one of its cleanest officials in the death of Jim Britton.
Lester Lund, who was seriously ill following an accident two weeks ago, was able to leave the LeMars hospital last Sunday for home.
Paul Keleher narrowly escaped losing the sight of one eye last week when he ran into a nail. He has been covering his eye in a sling ever since.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. George Peters July 14.
Mr. & Mrs. Barney Dunn are the parents of a son born to them July 14.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mrs. Merle Weicht entertained seven little guests Monday afternoon in honor of her son Marvin, on his seventh birthday. Ice cream, cake and lemonade were served after several hours of games.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Walter Ehlers, Cleghorn on Saturday evening, July 26 a baby girl.
Word has been received by relatives of the sad death of Joseph Hobbs which occurred at his home in Pasadena, CA Monday. The telegram briefly stated that Mr. Hobbs had fallen off a ladder about four o’clock in the afternoon and died that same evening around eight.
Mrs. Will Gibson and Mrs. O.H. Briggs entertained a company of their guests at the home of the former Friday afternoon in honor of their mother’s 73rd birthday. A two course luncheon was served.
95 Years Ago -1929
The First National Bank of Cherokee was robbed Friday by five bandits who laid down a barrage of machine gun bullets and escaped with $4500 in currency and bonds.
Rev. and Mrs. E.J. Plummer departed Monday for Monument, NE to spend two weeks visiting with Rev. Plummer’s father. They were accompanied as far as Lincoln, NE by Pearl Sims, who will visit there.
Mrs. Cox suffered a broken arm at her home on Tuesday. She is being cared for at Sioux Valley Hospital.
Truckmen began yesterday hauling gravel on Locust Street and the work will continue until all the streets are graveled under the plan made by the Council.
85 Years Ago -1939
Grasshoppers are unusually thick in some place, especially south and east of Marcus. A news representative visited the William Rubbert farm on Wednesday and saw a field of soybeans that had been entirely destroyed by the pests.
Howard Flanagan, Ronald Satrerlee, Lou Grauer, L.P. Fitzgerald and Frank Busch played in the golf tournament at Paullina Sunday afternoon between the Paullina club and the Storm Lake club.
Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Daubendiek of West Wend returned Tuesday from an eleven week trip to Germany. They report the people there as being happy and contented with no uneployment. Five good meals every day and work early and late. There will be no war unless someone attacks them in Mr. Daubendiek’s idea as gained by his contact with people there.
Lorraine Carley as Miss Marcus will compete with girls form other northwest Iowa towns for the position of Miss Clay County Fair. The fair queen will be crowned on the closing night of the fair at Spencer which begins September 11 and closes September 16.
Jerry Tentinger, five year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Jack Tentinger, was taken to the hospital at Rochester, Minnesota Saturday and his condition is reported as critical.
80 Years Ago – 1944
“Chuck” Bass has been awarded the “Purple Heart” for wounds inflicted on the second day of the “D” day invasion of Normandy.
Mrs. Kathryn Guertin, 84, passed away at the nursing home in Cherokee Sunday afternoon following an illness of about a year.
Pvt. And Mrs. Karroll Carson are the parents of a son born to them July 4th at the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City.
Henry Franck passed away suddenly Saturday night July 22 at the Sacred Heart Hospital following an illness of less than a week. His death illness to have been caused from an abscessed ulcer.
Fifteen young people of the Methodist church of Marcus returned Sunday from Camp Methoji at Methodist Camp where they had spent this week.
75 Years Ago -1949
Henry Trinen, 59 and former resident of Marcus, died in a Sioux City hospital Monday, July 25 after an illness of several years.
A Remsen man, Ray Tritz, may be among the recipients of heroism awards to be presented by Governor Beardsley at special ceremonies during the Iowa State Fair days at Des Moines in August. Mr. Tritz is being recognized for saving his niece, Miss Judy Tritz from drowning in a sand pit east of Remsen about a year ago.
Wayne Dorr, owner of the Dorr Dairy in Marcus, has announced the addition of a new service to his customers. By Saturday of this week, homogenized milk will be available through his daily deliveries.
Mrs. Fred Zoch, 52, passed away Saturday evening at her home in Cherokee township where she had lived the past twelve years.
The supervised playground program’s annual family night and picnic last Friday evening proved popular with quite a number of families joining in the picnic lunch.
70 Years Ago -1954
The deal was completed this week in which Gordon Rapp purchased the interests of his partner, Tom Sleezer in the Grocery here, assuming immediate possession.
Michael Bird, 88 and former resident of this community, was buried Thursday in Holy Name cemetery here. Mr. Bird farmed northeast of Marcus for many years, moving Sioux City about 26 years ago. He died Tuesday morning at his home there after a long illness.
Harry Helgason, now living at Kansas City, Missouri, has been secured to handle the coaching of all sports and teach mathematics in the Marcus Public School.
Mrs. Mable Grauer, 65 and resident of this community since 1906, passed away at her home here Saturday, July 24 following several weeks illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Wetter and Steven have been spending several days in the Harry Nelson and Boos Wallin homes here, having completed a tour of active duty in the naval air corps.
65 Years Ago -1959
Ground work is being done for another addition to the Sands Seed Service plant which adjoins Marcus on the northeast. To be erected is a Butler steel building to be used for storage purposes.
Ronald Sirpless of Marcus has been named to the sales staff of Nutrena Feeds by R.O. Pape district manager of Mitchel, SD.
Albert Winters of Boyden set what must be some kind of a distance record.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Johnson became the parents of a daughter on July 15.
The news this week carries an advertisement of the closing out sale of the stock of Bill’s Shoe Shop in Marcus. Williams Sievers, operator of the business, plans to open a similar one in LeMars.
60 Years Ago -1964
G.W. Challman, 80 and lifelong resident of the Marcus community, passed away Thursday, July 16 at SVMH in Cherokee following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Kueny of Sioux City are the parents of a son born Tuesday, June 25 at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Sioux City.
Captain Charles Rosburg of Marcus is one of a class of twelve service men which recently were graduated from the Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edward Air Force Base in California.
Robert Meyer, who lived in Marcus for the fifteen years in which has father was pastor of Peace Lutheran Church, will be ordained into the the office of the ministry of the Lutheran Church Sunday, July 26 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wood River, IL.
The dedication for the W.L. Gund Memorial Library is planned for Sunday, August 9. The library will open for the checkout of books on August 11.
55 Years Ago -1969
Thelma Dorr left Monday, July 14 for Durham, England with seven other students and their chaperon Miss Irwin to study the American Institure for Foreign Study.
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent Garvin will be honored with an open house on the occasion of their 04th wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 27.
Gail Bancroft attended the State American Legion Auxiliary Convention in Des Moines.
Mrs. Sophia Doehla, 90 former resident of the Marcus Community passed away Tuesday morning at Primghar.
C.G. Addy, a member of the board of directors of the Farmers State Bank, Marcus for several years, was elected vice president at the annual meeting of stockholders Tuesday.
50 Years Ago -1974
Bert Ballard, 65 of Granville, died July 17 at his home after a brief illness.
Mike Olson beat wrestlers form Sioux City, Durant, and Vermillion in winning his weight championship at LeMars Seratoma Wrestling Tournament.
Miss Mary Hacker of Lawton and Mr. Brian Friedrich of Marcus have been chosen to represent the Iowa District West Lutherna Laymen’s League in Columbus, Ohio July 28-August 2.
Mr. & Mrs. Tony Delperdang of Remsen are the parents of a baby born Friday, July 19.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Donald DeMars, 86 of rural Cleghorn, died at his home Wednesday, July 18 of an apparent heart failure. He has been a resident of Cherokee County since 1964.
The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America Awards Program announced today that Steve Olson of rural Marcus, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Olson, has been selected for inclusion in the 1979 edition of “Outstanding Young Men of America.”
You are invited to attend the final Centennial Service at Trinity Lutheran Church on July 29. This service will commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of Trinity that was founded on July 29, 1879. when the first organizational meeting was held in a school house where the present church is located.
