110 Years Ago – 1914
J.W. Nield, president of the Marcus school board has during the past few weeks been working in behalf of a normal training course becoming a regular branch of the Marcus High school. Eleven young ladies will start the course in September.
The Marcus baseball team defeated Alton last Sunday by a score of 6 to 4.
The bridge near and Heline farm east of Marcus on the Hawkeye Highway will be taken out within the next few days to be replaced by a concrete span.
Mrs. Cora Wirt daughters, Hazel and Blanche returned last night from a two week visit at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Wirt near Parker, SD.
Bert Wilson has just completed some improvements to his home. He has built a bedroom over the kitchen, a sleeping porch and a porch on the south side of the house. A window has also been placed in the sitting room.
105 Years Ago -1919
George Hoxsie was seriously injured while at work moving a building in Cleghorn. It was necessary to move a limb of a huge tree in order to get the building through the street and Mr. Hoxsie climbed the tree and was sawing the limb off when it broke off letting him fall a distance of twelve feet. He was picked up unconscious and brought to his home in Marcus. Mr. Hoxie was badly injured in the back and neck.
The Central Hotel is being improved this week by a coat of paint. Landlord Dempsey is weilding the brush.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Swart entertained twent relatives in honor of Phillip Greff, a returned soldier.
100 Years Ago – 1924
A social meeting of Lady Foresters is being held at Columbia Hall tonight. Mrs. Max Radcliff and Mrs. Dan Collins have charge of the entertainment.
Thirty farm bureau ladies met with the chairman, Mrs, Tom Garvin on Tuesday.
Chris Scott, who has been teaching in the Philippine Islands for the past years, is on his way to Marcus.
Robert, one year old of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Galles, was the victim of a Fourth of July accident which might have resulted very seriously. Raymond, an older brother, had the child in his arms when he lit a firecracker. The firecracker backfired striking the child in the face.
95 Years Ago -1929
Members of the firm of the J.P. Beck company and clerks and families are looking forward to their annual picnic.
Rev. and Mrs. E.J. Plummer, Mrs. Rebecca Miller and Mrs. Alice French called at the John Holmes home on Tuesday evening.
85 Years Ago -1939
Mr. & Mrs. L.J. McGivern left Thursday morning for New York City to attend the fair. They will also visit in Washington DC and other points in the east.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Treptow are the parents of a daughter born to them on Saturday evening.
A deal was completed last week by which N.E. Devin of Sioux City, bought and took possession of the Cliff Ritts tavern July 1.
Mr. & Mrs. WW Bass and Mr. & Mrs. Harry Baumgardner left for an extended trip.
Miss Charlotte Toomey of Washington DC, accompanied Mr. & Mrs. Michael O’Brien of Sioux City to Marcus Tuesday where she will visit for a few days.
Jean Bass and Betty Birch left on Wednesday evening by train for Rochester, MN. To visit with the latter’s sister, Louine, who is a nurse in the hospital there.
Mr. & Mrs. J.F. Conkin of Long Beach, CA are visiting with their daughter, Mr. & Mrs. R.E. Smith.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Howard Johnson, formerly associated with his father, G.W. Johnson, has taken complete charge of the Radio Electric Shop charge at its new location north of George’s Pharmacy.
Mr. & Mrs. WW Bass received word Wednesday through the War Department that their son Charles , has been slightly wounded June 7th. Chuck took part in the Normandy, France invasion at the time he was wounded.
Fred Mossman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Mossman, received his pilots wings at an impressive ceremony at Lubbock, TX.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Nagle of Chicago were guests Sunday in the Floyd Nagle home.
Mr. & Mrs. Lowell Nelson and Grant attended a family picnic at the home of Mrs. Nelson’s parents, Rev. and Mrs. Osborn, at Mapleton Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1949
Lamerne Fuhrmann has accepted a position with the Cherokee County Farm Bureau office and has resigned as correspondent for the Cleghorn news.
Beryl Collins passed away at a Los Angeles hospital.
Clarence Dorr had a narrow escape in a truck accident last Thursday afternoon while returning from delivering a load of concrete block south of town.
In a very interesting letter received by Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Woodall from their daughter, Mrs. Virgil Wirt, a description of the typhoon which struck Okinawa on Monday, June was given in complete detail.
Rita Garvin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Garvin, and Mary Broblek, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Broblek, entered the Ellis School of Cosmetology in Sioux City.
Roger Leavitt left Monday from Sioux City for Glencoe, IL where he will attend Northwestern University for the summer months.

The Trinity Lutharn Church in Amherst Township will observe its Diamond Anniversary Sunday, July 25.
The Marcus Merchants ran their winning streak to 14 the past week, with 3 more victories.
Dennis Peavy was honored in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Howard Peavy on his birthday Sunday.

Leland Hogue, operator of the Hogue Jewelry in Marcus, is inviting the public to an open house at his store for the 9th anniversary.
Albert Winters of Boyden set what must be some kind of a distance record Tuesday. He pulled a load a barley behind a tractor to Sand Seed Service in Marcus a distance of 40 miles.
Ronald Sirpless of Marcus has been named to the sales staff of Nutrena Feeds by R.O. Pape, district manager of Mitchell, S.D.
Willie Bauder of Cleghorn is hobbling around with his left foot in a cast as the result of a freak accident involving a whirligig lawn mower.
Mr. & Mrs. Wendell Grauer left a week ago for Buffalo, NY, Mr. & Mrs. Harold Ladenthin flew to Buffalo last Saturday and joined the Grauers and are attending the International Lutheran Laymens League convention.
A crew of men this week have been repairing and putting brick veneer front on Ewold’s Place, matching the stucco front which was put on a year ago.

The Public Library will be closed from July 13 to August 4. It will reopen in its new location at the Gund Memorial Building.
Mrs. Ida Schorg, 81, a resident of Plymouth county for 60 years, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital where she had been a patient for two weeks.
Mrs. H.R. Rasmussen had the pleasure of visiting via telephone with relatives in Denmark on Sunday.
Mark Brancroft, Marcus attorney has purchased the Charles Neimann building last occupied by the Baumann Bakery.
Mrs. Ben Snyder, 87, a Sheldon resident, passed away Saturday night at a Sheldon hospital after an illness of several weeks.
Mrs. Vance Marquis, Vanna Joy and Vance Bruce and Mrs, William Ehmcke, Lance, Paul and Twila attended State Board of the C.A.R. held Monday in Des Moines.

Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Harms and family are moving this Thursday to Merrill where Mr. Harms will be employed with Simonsen Mill branch office.
Roy Galigan 68, a lifelong resident of the Marcus community passed away in a LeMars hospital following many months of respiratory illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Wendell Grauer are attending many months of respiratory illness.
The student Association of the University of South Dakota at Vermillion has announced the election of a number of students senators. Among them are Dan Ohlendorf, Dick Nielsen, and Robert Garvin, all of Marcus.
Rev. Norbert Georges, O.P. son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Amos George of Marcus, passed away at St. Rose Dominican Priory at Springfield, Kentucky.
The class of 1944 is planning an open house at the shelter house at the Marcus Park.
50 Years Ago -1974
Sixth District Democratic congressional candidate Berkley Bedell will be hosted by Cherokee and Plymouth county supporters at an outdoor funding raising cookout at the Marcus Community Golf Club.
Patricia Smith, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Smith, Marcus has completed the requirements for graduation from the Medical Secretarial program at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls.
Marilyn Ferrin of Marcus is one of 11 candidates for the title of Queen of the Cherokee County Fair.
Mr. Ab Smith presented a check to Mrs. Friedrich to help with the transportation expenses for the Marcus Madrigal Group. “Ab” very generously donated all the profits from the 4th of July popcorn sales.
Kay Bass, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Laurence Bass, is listed as a Westmar Scholar at Westmar College.
Last week three Marcus boys attended the Siouxland basketball camp held in Cherokee. Those attending were Dennis McClintock, Jeff Hiller and Greg Taylor
45 Years Ago – 1979
Remsen Champion steer at Remsen’s Kids Days was shown by Dan Berglund, Marcus, a member of the Grand Meadow Future Feeders 4H Club.
Lowell Roberson Sr., passed away at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a long illness.
Robert Thomson, 61, owner and operator of Thomson Garage and Implement passed away at University hospital in Iowa City after a six week illness.
Kim Bass, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Laurence Bass of Marcus, and Margee Specht, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harris Specht graduated at the 76th annual commencement of St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing.
Walter Wallin, a former resident of Cherokee, passed away in Bellingham, Washington, at the age of 84 years.
40 Years Ago –1984
Paul Flanagan, along with fishing partner John Fry, Vance Marquis, Bob Sand, Steve Hathaway and Langdon Polson caught a 11 lb 7 oz walleye in Lake Kariskons during a fishing trip.
Members of Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 3309 Marcus, Iowa have been awarded a $2,500 AAL grant to aid in the development of a small park on a vacant downtown lot.
Msgr Ernest Ament of Garnavillo was a recent Friday and Saturday guest in the Bill Ament Home.
Jeannine Andersen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Andersen, Marcus, has been named to the honors list for the spring 1984.
