110 Years Ago – 1912
Jethro Stowater purchased the 198 acres owned by John Barmann near Germantown at $225per acre.
An eight hour rain fell Monday to the relief of corn and probably can be called a million dollar rain.
More cream is the growing need of the Sjostrom Brothers at their local cream and butter plant.
The sixth annual assembly of the Marcus Chautauqua will open Saturday for seven days entertainment.

105 Years Ago – 1917
Norman Smith was severely burned one day last week while filing the hot tractor with water.
Mrs. Rasmus Juhl, 68, passed away this morning following two strokes.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Leavitt and Mr. & Mrs. Harry Miller went on a two weeks trip to Idaho.
John Collins purchased an Overland touring car and Lee Carey a Country Club roaster. Marie Radcliffe is the owner of a Premier seven passenger auto.
The Nels Anderson family if Cherokee chose Marcus as their future home, purchasing the Arthur Day home here for $4,000.

85 Years Ago -1937
An 80 acre farm 2 1/2 miles southeast of Marcus was sold last week by Ernest Kauffman for $150 per acre.
Lucille Cave fell Wednesday and broke her arm while at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Merle Cave.
Nelson and Sons have leased a building on Main Street for two years to open a high class furniture store.
Marcus is to receive the $67,00 grant from the government for street improvements.

80 Years Ago – 1942
Vernon Means, 14 had his right hand badly injured in a hay chopper Saturday.
Milton Zemke of Storm Lake has been secured as athletic coach to fill the vacancy at Marcus High School.
Twins were born to Mr. & Mrs. Ben Enneking Sunday morning and they have been named Daniel Michael and Diane Margaret.
A public meeting was held Friday evening from the purpose of disposing of the increased telephone rate problem.

75 Years Ago -1947
With the continued hot dry weather, Fire Chief Howard Peavey warns residents of the Marcus community to practice additional care in burning any trash, or in policing grass fires.
The Mark Garvin home in south Marcus is being renovated with a coat of slate siding.
Mr. & Mrs. W.W. Bass entertained at a reception in their home in honor of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Leland Hogue, for close relatives and friends.
The basement has been dug for a new home for Mr. & Mrs. Ben Ohlendorf in south Marcus just north of the Mrs. Rouch home.

70 Years Ago – 1952
Work has been started on a 16×26 foot concrete block building in back of the Marcus Panatorium.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson of Cleghorn are the parents of a girl born August 24.
Mrs. Harma Barnes was honored on her 91st birthday, August 26, by a group of her neighbors in the home of Mrs. Ernest Kauffman.
Susan Carlson was bitten on the face by a dog Sunday afternoon in her home. This is the second time this summer that Susan was seriously bitten by a dog.

65 Years Ago – 1957
This issue of the News, in addition to marking the75th anniversary of the town of Marcus, also marks a similar anniversary for the Marcus News. The Marcus News was founded September 23, 1882, by A.J. Parks, who came here from some place in the west. He was about 45years old and was a bachelor as far as local people know.
Emmet Ryan, Marcus farmer, is in St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City as the result of a fall at his farm. He was working in an overhead bin and fell some 12 feet.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Wilcox of Cleghorn will observe their silver wedding anniversary on Aug. 25.
The Mouw Hardware, owned and operated by Mr. & Mrs. Russell Mouw for 13 years, is closing out and moving away from Marcus.

60 Years Ago – 1962
Linda Nelson spent the summer working in Milwaukee, where she played with a woman’s softball team.
Supt. Burdette Hansen received word Saturday that the Marcus Community School was first in the state reporting 100% membership of its faculty in the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and the local organization.

55 Years Ago – 1967
The engagement and approaching marriage of Joanne Mahler of Cleghorn to Jerry Pitts of Cleghorn, has been announced by the bride-elect’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Mahler of Sac City.
Many friends and relatives called in the home of Mrs. Ben Delaney to extend best wishes on her 91st birthday.
Alayda Irwin, bride-elect of Phillip Ladenthin, was the honored guest at a miscellaneous shower at Peace Lutheran Church.
Tim Wolf of Cleghorn showed the grand champion hog at the Marcus Fair, as well as the champion pen of three.

50 Years Ago – 1972
There were 46 entries in this year’s Baby Beef Show at the Marcus Fair. Dave Bierman showed the grand champion, a heavyweight Hereford. Diana Drefke taking the reserve champion honors with her heavyweight crossbred. Greg Carver showed the grand champion heifer with his heavyweight crossbred and the reserve championship went to Tyler Artz with his Hereford.
Ann and Paula Knudson, portraying Raggedy Ann and Andy, captured the over-all first prize in the Youth Parade at the Marcus Fair.
A devastating fire swept through Sandi’s Café and Nagle’s Chevrolet Body Shop was completely gutted.

30 Years Ago –1977
Dick Ament, Greeley, CO, and his son, Michael of Oakland, NE, spent Thursday in the W.T. Ament home.
Mr. & Mrs. Darrell Downs and family returned last Thursday after a vacation in South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.

40 Years Ago – 1982
James Beaton, a graduate of Marcus Public High School, was recently elected President of the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountant.
Mrs. Eric (Elsie) Johnson, 95, passed away Saturday in the Riverview Manor in Cherokee following a brief illness.
Dave Strautz of Marcus caught a 28-pound salmon at Algona, Wisc. Fishing in Lake Michigan waters.

35 Years Ago – 1987
Jennifer Smith, daughter of Steve and Linda Smith of Marcus, is the 1987 Little Miss Marcus.
A “Summer poinsettia” grew from out of a crack in a cement step in the rear of the Gladys Phillips home here in Marcus.
Earl Flanagan, 76, a life long Marcus resident, passed away Saturday at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a long illness.

30 Years Ago – 1992
The Marcus Garden Club will hodl its 60th anniversary on Tuesday, August 25 at the Municipal Building.
June ReNee Reinboth and Rev. John Meehan were married Saturday, June 20, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA. John former Marcusite, is an associate pastor at that church.

25 Years Ago – 1997
Miranda Boekhout, 11, of Marcus earned a gold medal August 6 in the sub-midget high jump at the AAU National Junior Olympics held in Charlotte, NC. Boekhout jumped 4’6” in claiming the national titile and gaining All-American sttaus out of a field of 27 qualifiers from all over the county.
Milton and Kathleen Delperdang will celebrate their golden anniversary August 30 at Holy Name Catholic Church.
Mike Moats succeeded Jack Shea as Scoutmaster of Marcus Boy Scout Troop 113. Jack has served for 30 years with the troops and will continue on the board.

20 Years Ago – 2002
Max and Nancy Drefke will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Saturday, August 30 with a open house and dance at the Marcus Community Center.
Jon and Bev Kampa of St. Paul, Minnestoa are the proud parents of a two year old daughter from the Ukraine. Her name is Holly Amber, she is welcomed home on August 2nd by her big sister Stephanie.
