105 Years Ago -1920
This is only a rumor, but there’s a strong wind behind it and the story is traveling fast. There are 31 couples, 62 persons in Remsen who seriously intend to get married very soon.
About 25 men were to Remsen on Saturday night to witness the wrestling match between Joe Tomsche of Marcus and Ben Nitzke of Storm Lake. Tomsche won the match in two falls.
The Peters Bros. have completed moving their equipment into their new annex which was recently added to their fine garage building. Their garage is now 50×200 feet and has an entrance on two sides
100 Years Ago – 1925
The high school orchestra will play at the three act farce to be presented February 9 and 10 in the Opera House. Ray Walsh and Lee Carey will put on a one act farce, “Timothy” Ryan’s Return” and Leo Wendt with Marie Alesch at the piano will sing some of his favorite songs.
At the annual meeting of Marcus Booster Club Thursday night. Dr. M.F. Joynt was elected president, succeeding L.J. McGivern who has served since the clubs organization two years ago.
The Fourth Annual Father Son banquet was held at the Methodist Church Tuesday night. An elaborate menu was served by the ladies of the church.
Marcus high school contestants entered the sub county declamatory contest at Larrabee last Friday night carried off the three highest honors. The winners were James Nield in the oratorical class, Ruth Wilcox dramatics and Louene Birch, humorous.
90 Years Ago -1935
Loren Means left Monday for Battle Creek, Michigan after spending a month with his parents Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Means. Loren has accepted a position in the Kellogg Food Factory and will also attend school.
Checks taking care of most of the contracted farms in Diamond Willow, Silver, Spring and Liberty Townships were distributed Wednesday by B.H. Anderson, County Treasurer of the Corn-Hog Committee and members of the allotment committee.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Alice French former Marcus resident for many years and prominent church worker, were held in the Methodist Church Monday with Rev. A.J. Quirin in charge.
The senior class of the public school enjoyed a theatre party at the American Theatre in Cherokee Saturday evening. After the picture the group enjoyed lunch.
Henry Dorr, local breeder of Poland China hogs, will hold his last sale at the town farm in Marcus Tuesday, February 21, Included in this sale are 45 head of choice bred sows and gilts.
Joseph Kaiser passed away at his home Friday following several weeks illness of double pneumonia.

Mrs. Elizabeth Anna Dorr, 96, passed away at her home in Marcus Friday, February 2.
Anders Gustaf Nelson passed away Tuesday morning January 30 at his home in Marcus at the age of 81 years 8 months and 6 days.
Victor Johnson, former operator of Johnson’s Shoe Shop here, died at his home in Meriden Saturday night.
Edgar Roseen was given a pleasant surprise last Saturday evening when his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jake Roseen, invited in several friends to help him celebrate his birthday anniversary.
Friends of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Groepper gave them a pleasant surprise when they gathered in their home on Thursday evening to help Mr. Groepper observe his birthday.
Bass and Sons bought 775 head of hogs in Marcus last Friday. That the largest purchase of the season so far.
Walter Garlow will sell 100 head of livestock consisting of thre hourses, 13 head of cattle, 70 head of hogs and 16 ewes at a public sale January 29.
Mr. & Mrs. Marion Bird are the parents of a son born last Thursday evening.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. L.P. Fitzgerald are the parents of a son born to them Monday, February 5 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Funeral service for Frank Wagner, former Marcus resident, were held Mondayat Madison, SD. He passed away at his home in Madison last Thursday after a long illness.
The OAO Club and their husbands honored Mr. & Mrs. Johnson have moved from Tilden Township to a farm south of Fielding.
Carl Johnson was honored on his 78th birthday when friends and relatives came to help celebrate.
A number of relatives and friends were Sunday evening dinner guests at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Mohning in Remsen. The occasion honored Mrs. Mohning on her 91st birthday.
75 Years Ago -1950
John Davis, 78, who lived northeast of Paullina, met death Wednesday afternoon in a truck car collision in front of his farm.
Dr. E.J. McGovern, 79, and well known Remsen, physician, passed away in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars on Thursday, February 2. He had been in falling health for the past five months.
Mr. & Mrs. George Beaton celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary at their home Friday evening. Following a special evening, ice cream and cake was served.
Mr. & Mrs. Forrest Burch of Meriden were honored at a 20th wedding anniversary party Wednesday, evening February 1.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson will observe their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, February 13.
Funeral Services were held in the Church of Christ at Austin, Minnesota Saturday, January 22 for Mrs. Richard Todd, former Marcus resident who passed away January 19 after a lingering illness. She had reached the age of 84 years 5 months and 13 days.
Mr. & Mrs. John Ferris were pleasantly surprised Saturday evening when their neighbors came with well filled baskets for supper. Mr. & Mrs. Ferris are moving this week to a farm in Fredonia Township, Plymouth County.
Mr. & Mrs. Norman Smith were honored on their wedding anniversary when a group of neighbors gathered at their home Sunday evening to help them celebrate.
Merle Duane Prunty, son of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Prunty has been named to the student honor roll at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines according to E.O. Fenton, school president.
65 Years Ago -1960
A large barn and a machine shed on the Lee Hodgen farm tenanted by Kenneth Miller eight miles south and two miles west of Marcus, were completely destroyed by fire last Friday evening.
Mrs. Susan Hoxsie, the oldest resident of this community, observed her 98th birthday Thursday, February 4. There was no special observance of the occasion although a number of friends stopped into pay their respects.
Mrs. Wayne Hazen, 44 died Monday, February 8 in LeMars after a few weeks illness. She was a lifelong resident of Cleghorn.
Three Marcus builders have combined their business and will operate as a partnership in the future. They are Herman Fischer and Marvin and Leon Ebert. The new firm will be know as Ebert, Fischer and Ebert.
Jean Garlow of Marcus is one of 17 seniors whose names appear on the end of semester by Wayne State Teachers College.
60 Years Ago -1965
Jean French, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leo French has been named the 1965 Homemaker of Tomorrow from the Meriden-Cleghorn Community School.
Gary McClintock, son of Mrs. Minnie McClintock, received his bachelor of laws degree from the University of Iowa. College of Law at the mid-year commencement January 30.
Peter Heinis, 91 and longtime Marcus resident, passed away Thursday February 4 at Cherokee following a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Barnes are having open house at Grace Methodist Church in Marcus in observance of their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 21.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Maccutchno of Eau Gallie, Florida, are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, January 26.

Ernest Benson, 88, who had made his home with his brother Werner Benson here for the past ten years died Tuesday at Cherokee. His death followed a short illness.
Patricia Nielsen representing the Marcus Jaycees was fourth runner up in the state Junior Miss contest held at Spencer Sunday evening.
Luther Miller, 81, and life long resident of this community, passed away Wednesday morning Feb. 4 after a lengthy illness.
Tom Mayer, a sophomore at Iowa Great Lakes Community College at Estherville, is presently spending a nine week training period a the Farmers Cooperative Elevator here as part of feed and fertilizer and marketing technology studies. Tom is a son of Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Mayer of Marcus.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mr. & Mrs. Don Lage of Omaha are parents of their first child, a daughter born Tuesday, February 4.
An open house honoring Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer on their 55th wedding anniversary was held Sunday, February 2 at the Peace Lutheran Church parlors.
Marilyn Ferrin, a member of the graduating class of 1975 auditioned for and receive a $500 music scholarship to Morningside College in Sioux City, Marilyn is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Ferrin of rural Marcus.
Donna Jaminet has been named Meriden-Cleghorn High School’s Betty Crocker Family Leader of Tomorrow winner for 1975. Donna is the daughter of Mrs. Francis Jaminet of rural Cleghorn.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mr.s Donald Simons will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 17 with an open house at Grace United Methodist Church.
Superior Fertilizer, the newest enterprise in Marcus, opened its doors for business this week. As an independent fertilizer and ag chemical retail dealer, they will be introducing a new fertilizer operations.
Carl Seel, 83, of Marcus died Friday, January 25 at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen of a long illness.
On January 20 Kip Dorr set a new record for Career Varsity wins by defeating Brad Henrich of Akron with a score of 3-0. Kip now has 71 career varsity wins. He tied the record of 70 career wins set by John Downey in 1973 by pinning Jim Robinson of Sgt. Bluff in 32 seconds.
