110 Years Ago – 1915
This section was visited by a one time snow storm and blizzard last Friday and railroad traffic was blocked on the line. The afternoon train got stuck a mile and one half east of Meriden.
Last week John Baertling sold his residence property to William Byers one of the well to do farmers in Marcus township.
The band boys carried out a well planned surprise for F.L. Day last Tuesday evening when they gave a banquet in his honor at Mack’s Cafe.
James McClintock and John Meehan departed today for El Paso, Texas, to see the former’s son John Meehan who is very ill.
Mr. & Mrs. R.W. Moore arrived last week for Dempster, SD and are already located in the east part of town. Mr. Moore comes here to assume duties as cashier of the First National Bank.
105 Years Ago -1920
Many friends will be glad to hear of the recovery of Jay Peters Jr. a member of the Peters Brothers Automobile Firm, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City following an operation.
Ray Pierce is home after two years service with Uncle Sam’s forces in Panama, much to the joy of his relatives and friends. He was the guest of honor at a dinner party given at the Vivian Pierce home Friday evening when covers were laid for eight. On New Years Eve he was honored at a big party held in the Community Hall.
J.F. Collins and G.W. Evans went to Sioux City Tuesday to get new Overland automobiles.
Back to war time basis again with a sugar famine on, Marcus grocery stores have on hand exactly 250 pounds of sugar at this time. This is selling for 20 cents a pound with a limit of 2.5 pounds to a customer.
100 Years Ago – 1925
L.J. McGivern has recently purchased the fine residential property of James Crangel which was built four years ago.
The directors of the Bethel Telephone Company held their annual business meeting and election of officers at the school house Friday evening. The following officers were elected: Lovell Simons, president; William Gibson, treasurer and John Holmes, secretary.
A.L. Pitts was called to Iowa City this morning by the illness of his son Kenneth, a student at the State University. Kenneth underwent an operation of mastoid trouble.
The total receipts realized from “Safety First”, a three act play put on by local talent Monday and Tuesday was approximately $300.00.
Last Monday evening a few close neighbors surprised Mr. & Mrs. Edward Addy at their home. The evening was spent informally after which a delicious lunch was served. The Addy’s are moving to Lake Park and will greatly missed by their friends.
90 Years Ago -1935
The Odd Fellow building on Main Street is being remodeled and redecorated in preparation for a formal opening of the new Gamble store in Marcus.
Three members are to be elected to the board of education of Marcus Independent School District at the annual election to be held March 11. The terms of Mrs. Ethel Gund and W.E. Wiley will expire and a member will be elected to succeed Mrs. Gertrude Loomis who recently resigned.
Ready for occupancy are the two apartments remodeled by Gus Hadel from the property which was so long known as the Sweet home at the west end of Marcus.
Loren Means left Monday for Battle Creek, Michigan after spending a month with his parent’s, Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Means. Loren has accepted a position in the Kellogg Food factory and will also attend school.
The father and son banquet held at the Methodist Church parlors Wednesday evening was attended by about 125 persons. This was the first affair of its kind to be held in Marcus for several years and was well attended despite the rainy weather which prevailed that evening.
85 Years Ago -1940
Mrs. Joseph Hamman passed away Friday afternoon February 9 at her home northwest of Marcus after a brief illness of complication of pneumonia at the age of 39 years 9 months and 23 days.
Fire of undermined origin damage the two story Ben Hueser home seven and one half miles south and one and one half miles west of Marcus Tuesday at noon.
John Wankum, dairyman living east of Marcus, had the misfortune to be kicked by a cow Tuesday and suffered a broken leg.
About 20 neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Boothby last Saturday evening and surprised them on their 20th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. John Sand were given a pleasant surprise Sunday evening when about 75 friends and relatives gathered at their home in honor of their silver wedding anniversary.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Lt. & Mrs. Junior Barwick are the parents of a daughter born to them January 30 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Frank Wagner, former resident of this community, died at his home near Junius, SD on Thursday, February 1 after having been bedfast for 14 months.
Mrs. Mary Day, 90, of LeMars passed away Friday morning in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Herman Hueser was honored at a handkerchief shower Friday afternoon when 12 ladies surprised her at her home. The happy occasion was her birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. R.P. Muehl entertained at dinner last Wednesday evening in honor of Nic Neuroth who celebrated his 70th birthday on that day.
75 Years Ago -1950
Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church in Paullina Monday afternoon for Mrs. Alex Brown 83, former resident of Marcus.
R. E. Drefke was elected president of the board of directors of the Community Cooperative Oil Company of Marcus Wednesday afternoon at the directors meeting which followed the 22nd annual meeting of the company’s shareholders.
Mr. & Mrs. John Specht observed their 40th anniversary Friday, January 27.
An oyster supper was held Sunday evening in the Jethro Stowater home honoring him on the eve of his 84th birthday.
The junior class of Holy Name high school presented a short one act play last Wednesday evening in the church hall. The play was entitled “Paul Wrecks the Car”.
70 Years Ago -1955
Open House will be held Sunday afternoon February 20 for Mr. & Mrs. Donald Simons in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Schorg of Remsen will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Wednesday, February 23.
Mrs. Charles Davis of Marcus died suddenly last Saturday evening at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a heart attack.
Charles Nielsen has leased the Klingborg building east of Hey’s Leather Shopand will open an electric service and appliance business in the near future.
One hundred twenty five friends and relatives attended open house at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson Sunday, February 13, the occasion being their silver wedding anniversary.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Brady Saturday, January 29 in Sacred Heart Hospital.

Tom, Mary and Bobby Garvin entertained their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Garvin at dinner Sunday at the J & D Café honoring them on their anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Ebert of Iowa City are the parents of a daughter born Saturday, February 13.
The Marcus girls basketball team won their first round game in the sectional tournament at Hinton Tuesday evening and will meet Hinton in one of the semi finals this Thursday evening,
Mrs. Ralph Porter was pleasantly surprised Tuesday morning by some of her neighbors. The ladies brought and served coffee and rolls, the occasional being Mrs. Porter’s birthday.
Mrs. Edgar Roseen entertained at a party Saturday afternoon honoring her daughter Karen on her sixth birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. William Cronin are the parents of a daughter born Monday, February 8 at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Dr. George Wiedmeier was given recognition at Tuesday nights Rotary dinner for 25 years record of perfect attendance.
Mr. & Mrs. James Boles of Sgt. Bluff are the parents of a son born Wednesday. February 10.
Rotarian’s and their ladies from a number of neighboring clubs joined the Marcus Rotary Club at a dinner Tuesday evening marking the local club 25th and the 60th anniversary of Rotary International.
Mrs. Iva Grover entertained at dinner Sunday in her home honoring her mother Mrs. Nora Alger on her 88th birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Chris Miller entertained at a dinner Saturday evening at Sub’s Ranch Kitchen at Spencer in honor of their 5th wedding anniversary.
55 Years Ago -1970
Miss Emma Mulvaney, sister of the late Jame Mulvaney, passed away Sunday, February 8 at the age of 86 years. She had spent the past two and one half years at Happy Siesta in Remsen.
Army Doctor John Norris, son of Dr. and Mrs. Luke Norris of Marcus, was promoted to Major while serving at Noble Army Hospital Ft. McCellan, Alabama.
Wes Carney has bought the form Marcus Chick n’Feed building from Ernie Nelson at Acton, Massachusetts. Ut will be known as Carney Seed and Supply.
Joyce Peavy, Dan Miller, Denise Bunting and Jim Dunn will be the chosen vocalists to take part in the yearly Northwest Iowa Choral Festival.
Mrs. Eleanor Brady was honored on her birthday at a party Sunday evening in the Leo Brady home.
50 Years Ago -1975
Sand Seed Service, Kent Feed dealer, at Marcus was recognized recently by Kent Feeds Inc., Muscatine, for high feed sales and as an outstanding farm supplier at a banquet at Kona, Hawaii.
Mrs. Kinford Stowater, 75 of Marcus died February 9 soon after her arrival at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee where she was taken after becoming ill at home.
A group of Marcus residents met with the Siouxland Health Planning Council on Monday evening February 10and presented an application to the Council for the construction of a Care Center. The request was shelved for 30 days during which time members of the planning committee must come up with factual evidence to present to the council that the need for a center here in Marcus really exists and that financial, professional and directional qualifications can be employed if the petition receives the go ahead.
The Marcus boys basketball team whipped Willow 75-50 here last Friday night. The leading scores for Marcus were Mike Bies 27, Addy 11 and Rick Dreckman with 10.
45 Years Ago – 1980
The children of Garland and Marylis Hohbach invite all friends and relatives to an Open House in honor of their parent’s 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 24.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Prescott are the parents of their first child, a son born February 2 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Eugene (Pee Wee) Ferris of Qumby will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary Saturday February 16 at the VFW in Cherokee.
Mrs. Laura Petersen celebrated her 89th birthday January 30 with several neighbor ladies calling in the afternoon and sharing birthday cake and coffee.
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Simons will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 17.
