100 Years Ago – 1925
Last Thursday night a Fountain of Youth party was staged in the high school by the members of the faculty with the exception of Professors Holiday and Sheppard.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Hanson expect to start on their homeward journey from Denmark January 31. They will visit in New York and Chicago on the way home.
The farm sale of W.W. Bass lat Wednesday made a new record for farm sales in this community. The entire $12,000 worth of stock and machinery was sold in 3 and half hours, the highest priced cow brought $260.00.
The freshman girls of the high school and teachers enjoyed a jolly time at the home of N.D. Geringer one evening this week. None of the guests were allowed to represent an age over six years. A juvenile luncheon was served as a fitting climax to the evening.
95 Years Ago -1930
Miss Mary McClintock died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Henry Niemann was re-elected president, a position she has so efficiently and conscientiously held for several years.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Miles, for many years prominent in Cherokee County, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in Cherokee on Monday.
More than 200 Masons of Marcus and northwest Iowa territory attended the school of instruction here Tuesday and Wednesday.
L.M. Johns, prominent farmer of this locality, was re-elected president of the Cherokee County Farm Bureau at the annual meeting in Cherokee last Thursday.

Holy Name seniors with a perfect attendance record for the first semester are: Rose Marie Alesch, Eileen Collins, Leonard Bindner, John Brady, Mary Catherine Kelly, Gordon Kestel, Florence Roethler, Isabel Roethler and Melvin Toner.
Mr. & Mrs. Ben Hueser are parents of a daughter born Thursday evening.

Ready for occupancy are the two apartments remodeled by Gus Hadel from the property which was so long known as the Sweet Home at the west end of Marcus.

Leonard Meylor, formerly of this vicinity, died at his home near Kingsley, Sunday, January 28.
Oscar Heline was re-elected president of the Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa on the last day of the convention at Des Moines last week.
Mrs. Carl Dorr passed away Saturday afternoon, January 27 at her home in Marcus at the age of 71 years and 11 days.
Thomas Bird passed away January 24 at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City being 68 years, 11 months and 23 days of age.
Gus Nelson, pioneer of this community, passed away at his home in the west part of town Tuesday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Means were given a pleasant surprise last Thursday evening when a group of friends came to help them celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Emile Ducommun, 76, passed away at 11:45 am Saturday at his home in Cleghorn after a long illness.
Peace Lutheran Ladies Aid celebrated its fifth birthday anniversary last Sunday evening with a fellowship dinner for the congregation and friends.
Howard Johnson, a Marcus hardware dealer, was elected president of the Marcus Sportsman’s Club at its meeting last Thursday evening. Retiring president is Ellis Homes.
Greg Snyder carries an advertisement this week announcing the reopening of his repair shop. Greg has been busy the past few weeks preparing a building on the farm north of town.
Pete Peterson was pleasantly surprised Monday evening when a group of friends called to help celebrate his 75th birthday anniversary.
Roman Treinen of Compton California former Marcus resident arrived Monday to spend some time with relatives and friends. He was called home for the death of his stepbrother Lt, Richard Treinen who was killed Saturday in a plane crash near Portland, Oregen.
The fox hunt Sunday was not as successful as the previous week, but one animal was shot by Albert Nielsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Frances Wilberding and family moved into their new home Monday which was former owned by Mrs. Ella Foley.

Sgt. and Mrs. Melvyn Green are the parents of a daughter born to them Monday morning, January 29 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Erwin Mayer were pleasantly surprised last Sunday evening when friends, neighbors and relatives gathered at the municipal hall and honored them on their 25th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Elmer Blietz was honored on Sunday evening when relatives came to help her celebrate her birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Jep Juhl were pleasantly surprised last Wednesday evening when relatives honored them on their 33rd wedding anniversary.
Marcus lost her second game of the season to a strong Aurelia quintet with an ending score of 22-21. Stowater was high point man for Marcus with 13 points.
Howard Wallin of the Wallin machine shop in Marcus, has developed a hoist for wagons and pickups which observers believe can complete successfully with the best or other devices of this line, He received word from the patent office that he may go ahead with the manufacture and marketing of his invention.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mrs. Henning Nester, 63 life long resident of this community died Friday evening, January 28 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following an illness of several months.
Mr. & Mrs. Glen Ohlendorf are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, January 30 in Sacred Heart Hospital.
The Sisters of Charity, BVM who teach at Holy Name School, will soon have a new home through the generosity of the late Mrs. M.C. Evans. Mrs. Evans, prior to her recent death, deeded the home to the sisters.
John Neir, former Marcus High School football player has been awarded a freshman numeral by Morningside College. Neir was an outstanding end on coach Mike Fleming’s undefeated freshman eleven.
Charles Wilberding, a Maryhill farmer, purchased the Rock township farm belonging to the estate of the late A.J. Lenth at public auction Tuesday. The 122 acre farm brought $300 per acre.
The Marcus girls broke even in two games with Meriden last Friday evening the first team winning and the second team losing.
Holy Name of Marcus will enter the boys sectional tournament as the team to beat, with only Meriden given an outside chance to upset.
Elza Raw passed away at Hartly Tueday. Mr. Raw with a brother, farmed southwest of Marcus leaving here in 1914 he was 77 years old.
Benjamin Delaney 77, a resident of this community since 1882, died Saturday morning January 22, a victim of a heart attack.

Mary Miller, 17 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Miller of Marcus, was named Iowa Junior Miss in competition with a number of other girls at an event Saturday as Sioux City which was sponsored by the Junior Chamber of commerce.
Deborah Wallin, the 8 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Wallin of Marcus, died Tuesday morning in LeMars hospital immediately following an operation for appendicitis.
Leslie Fisher of Calumet has been notified that he was one of the top 50 salesman on the entire Moorman Manufacturing Co. sales force for the year 1959.
Frank Burch was honored Monday evening at a dinner at the J&D Cafe by the board of directors and employees of the Community Coop Oil Co. Mr. Burch was presented a gold watch bearing an inscription of his 30 years of service to the company at the local tank wagon driver.
This community was shocked last Friday by the report of the death of Bernard Curry, well known Cleghorn farmer.
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Bunkers are parents of a son, Curtis Anthony born January 19.

Mr. & Mrs. Robert Ruden are parents of a son born Saturday, January 30 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
John Dunn of Marcus, electrical contractor and member of the Marcus City council, was sworn in as mayor Monday filling the vacancy created by the resignation of J.C. Means.
In Marcus the local Rotary Club celebrated its 25 anniversary and links with more than 11,800 other Rotary clubs in the observance of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Rotary in Chicago, Illinois on February 23, 1905.
Mr. & Mrs. Phillip Treinen of Cleveland, Ohio are the parents of a daughter born January 27.
Dr. G.W. Wiedemeir announces in this weeks news that he is giving up his veterinary clinic practice in Marcus having accepted an appointment as federal veterinarian.

Mr. & Mrs. Tom Bortscheller of Minneapolis are the parents of a son born January 26.
Ruth DeBoer was chosen the 1970 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow from the Marcus High School.
Mr. Mrs. Forret Burch of Meriden will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house on February 1 at the Meriden Community Center.

Members of the Marcus Fire Department left Saturday afternoon for Indiana to acquire the new fire truck that has been purchased by the Marcus, Amherst, Tilden Townships.
Lloyd Cline, 44 passed away Tuesday, January 21 in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a short illness.
The Marcus Jaycees will present a thrilling evening of “Donkey Ball” on Sunday, February 9 at tehe school gymnasium.

Mr & Mrs. Roy Nelson of Marcus celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 10 with and open house at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus.
Mr & Mrs. Steve Beatty of are the parents of a daughter born on January 18.
Thomas Joe Schumacker of Remsen was killed and two other were injured when a car skidded on the icy road and smashed into here near here late Wednesday.
