110 Years Ago – 1914
Lorett Academy will open for the fall term on next Monday. This year there will be two new teachers to take the position left vacant by the transfer of two sisters.
The Cherokee Republican, which C.P. Quirin bought about 4 years ago and which he has since published, traded the plant this week for Minnesota land and they purchased of the the Republian has since been sold to H.L. Loft of Cherokee.
Charles Quririn left today with 14 head of Percheron horses, which he will exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair, the South Dakota State Fair at Huron SD and the Interstate Fair in Sioux City.
100 Years Ago – 1924
A military balloon from Omaha containing five boys from the training school at the place was landed on Dave Gowan’s farm near Cleghorn Monday evening. It was a rather pretty sight as it came sailing over the Schaffer and Vine farms at a low altitude. The boys were dropping hand bills for recruits. The balloon was brought in and shipped back to Omaha.
The public schools of Marcus opened this week with a lot of enthusiasm. 123 pupils are enrolled in the grades and 63 in the high school.
Miss Florence Quirin returned Tuesday from her summer tour as indoor Chautauqua director of the Redpath Lyceum Bureau. She made the western states spending much time in California and Montana.
Miss Maude Barr left Friday for Rockwell city where she has accepted a position as and instructor in the high school for the coming year.
95 Years Ago -1929
Mr. Walter Barnes entertained the As-
You-Like Club on Tuesday afternoon.
S.M. Wixcel returned last Friday from Des Moines where he was an interested spector at Iowa’s great fair.
Mr. and Mrs. James Rae Jr. and family departed Monday for Hopkinton, Iowa where they will visit with relatives.
Glays Neir and Agnes Pattison are members of the public school faculty in Washta. Miss Pattison teaches third and fourth and Miss Neir first and second.
Only twenty young people will attend college this fall. The include Kenneth Simons, Ralph Scott, Francis Brown, Fern Brown, Mildred Johnson, Ruth Scott, Florence Scott, Vera Herbert, Duane Mossman, James Haywood, Donald Delaney, Quentine Armbuster, Kenneth Harmison, Kenneth Pitts, Florence Sand, Anna Costello, Dureen Keleher, Olivia Alesch, Bonita Walsh, Edna Abel, and Neil Treggoning.
Mrs. Mary Schultz is confined to her bed with a throat infection.
George Kirchner has accepted a position with the J.P. Beck Store.
85 Years Ago -1939
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Gutenkauf are the proud parents of a son Gerhart William born August 8.
Joseph Hamilton has taken the agency for the Atwater Kent Screen Grid Radio, which contains the latest features.
Gerald Carey, Cyril Delaney, Floyd Gofford and Ed Jaminet motored to Minneapolis to take in the fair. On their return they stopped at other points of interest to visit friends and relatives.
Aldoph Groepper returned this week from the Minnesota State Fair where he showed his herd of spotted Polands following the Iowa State Fair.
Mrs. A.I. Birch departed Monday for Seattle, Washington where she expects to remain several weeks for her health.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Dean Berger had a grand champion baby beef at the Livestock Show last Thursday and Friday in Marcus.
New sidewalks are being constructed this week on the east side of Main Street from the Seegar building north to the next street.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Olson are the proud parents of a daughter born on Tuesday morning in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mary Knox returned home last Wednesday from Ellsworth, Kansas.
Ruth Osborn, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. George Osborn, left Saturday for Sutherland, where she will teach primary and first grade in the school there.
75 Years Ago -1949
A new record was established at the Marcus public school this year with the enrollment of 313 students. This compares very favorable with last years roll of 255.
A total of 225 pupils registered on Monday in the Holy Name High School. The high school received 67 students and the grades 158. This is one of the largest enrollment for the school.
Lovell Robberson has accepted the position as night marshal and is now on duty.
Rev. C.W. Samuelson superintendent of the Industrial tent at the Industrial Livestock Show was presented a fountain pen by the women in his department in appreciation for his generous assistance.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Beckwald and Mrs. A.J. Barrett motored to Kansas City, Kansas Monday with friends and will spend a week there.
Born to Pvt. And Mrs. Howard J. Flanagan, a daughter at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Thursday, August 24.
70 Years Ago -1954
The board of Directors of the Farmers Co-operative Elevator of Marcus last Thursday evening signed a contract with the Younglove Construction company of Sioux City for the construction fo the new quarter of a million bushel elevator here.
Natural gas was officially turned on in Cleghorn Wednesday night with appropriate ceremonies arranged by the Iowa Public Service Company which will distribute the fuel there.
Mr. & Mrs. L.J. Swalm of Baltimore, Maryland are the parents of twins, a boy and girl, born Friday, September 3.
An unseasonable and heavy hall storm accompanied by high wind struck south and west of Marcus early Sunday morning. It was the tall end of a heavier hail storm which severely damaged crops covering a strip about three miles wide.
Jean Simmons and Robert Mitchum are the stars in “She Couldn’t Say No” which plays at the Marland Theater here Sunday and Monday.
65 Years Ago -1959
Bill Collins, 70 passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, September 2 at his home in Marcus. He has been a resident of the Marcus Community all of his life.
Patrica Ann, infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Meehan died Tuesday, August 25, shortly after birth St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs.
Funeral rites were held Saturday morning at the funeral home in Jefferson from Mrs. John Grauer, a former resident of the Marcus community.
Davis Breon won the television set given away by the Marcus Commercial Club for the benefit of Elroy Baumann who suffered a heart attack following the July 4th Tug-of-war.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Swanson of Hazelt, New Jeresy are the parents of their first child, a daughter born Wednesday, August 26.
60 Years Ago -1964
Gwendoyle Miller, 16 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Miller who farm north of Cleghorn, was killed Monday night when the car in which she was driving alone went out of control when it struck some loose gravel.
A record 792 pupils have registered for classes in the Marcus Community Schools for this year’s sessions. This compares to 770 last year.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Ehly of New Haven, Indiana are the parents of their first child a son born August 18, 1964.
George Pimperton, 84, died quietly in his sleep at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. He had been ill for several weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Jay Robertson have purchased the Marcus Econ-O-Wash and have taken possession. They bought the business from Mr. & Mrs. Robert Bean who have operated it since buying it from Harry Nelson of Akron a year and half ago.

Ed Meehan has been named technical service manager of Colight, Inc., Minneapolis in a recent announcement by Dennis Burgess, vice president.
Raymond Johnson, 22 of rurual Marcus, died Saturday night at the hospital in Sac City of injuries suffered earlier in the evening in a two car collision at the junction of Iowa 196 and US 20 about two miles east of Sac City.
Mr. & Mrs. Rex Barnes of Paullina will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at their home Friday September 5 with their family, relatives and friends.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Martin of Oroville, California are the parents of a son born Sunday, August 31, 1969.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Qualls entertained at a dinner on Labor Day in honor of their daughter, Marcia, who is leaving to attend college in Tempe, Arizona.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mrs, Jennie Sjostrom passed away September 2 at the Happy Siesta home in Remsen at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 14 days.
Faith Lutheran Church will observe its 15 year anniversary and dedication of the renovated church on Sunday, September 8.
The new central kitchen of the Marcus Community Schools, located on Main Street, has been equipped with many new and modern cooking units and is now operating.
Herman Hueser, 77 of Marcus, died August 20 at a Remsen retirement home after a long illness.
A 25th wedding anniversary dinner was hosted by Karon and Nubs Schmitz and Bob and Sue Goodburn for their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Goodburg on August 30 at the Golden Pheasant in Remsen.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Miss Laura Ludden, 90 of Sutherland died Friday, August 17 at the Spencer Hospital.
Ron and Kris Schnoes of Remsen are the parents of a baby girl born August 24 at Floyd Valley Hospital.
John Boever, 80 of Marcus, died Tuesday, August 28 in a nursing home at Remsen of a long illness.
Ron Seggerman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman, Route 2, Marcus has been named to the 1978-79 Dean’s Honor List of Morningside College for the second semester.
