110 Years Ago – 1914
Miss Margaret Hyndman has accepted a position in the Cooperative store and will take up her duties next week.
Mrs. M.C. Evans was taken ill last week and her illness became so serious that on Sunday her life was despaired of. A trained nurse has been attending and her daughter Esther was summoned from Sioux City. This morning she is reported as much improved.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Delaney are the parents of a son born to them Sunday, August 23.
Mrs. Andrew Galigan for many years a well known and highly esteemed resident of the vicinity of Marcus was called from earth’s life on August 24 at her home in Sioux City.
Thomas Meehan recently purchased a new Overland automobile.
105 Years Ago -1919
W.W. Bass has sold a half interest in his confectionery store to Morris Nagle, who has been his efficient clerk since he purchased the business of H.W. Grauer last winner.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. C.J. Pepple August 16 a daughter.
Hugh Garvin, the ten year old son of Joe Garvin, broke his arm last Friday while cranking their Ford.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Kestle, while at the Lakes, recently chartered two flying machines and started at the same time for a spin over and around the lakes. They were so elated over the wonderfulness of the trip they failed to notice which won the race.
The little son of Mr. & Mrs. T. Staab got a watermelon seed lodged in his throat on Thursday and was taken to the LeMars hospital.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Dureen Keleher and Anna Costello left Monday for Davenport, where they will take up nurses training at the Mercy Hospital there.
Chris Scott, who recently returned from the Philippine Islands gave a splendid talk to a large and enthusiastic audience at the Methodist church Sunday evening. The talk included a description of the Island people, dress, food, customs, religion, homes and politics.
95 Years Ago -1929
The public school will be open for the years work on Monday morning, September 2 according to Harold Wood superintendent. Mr. Wood arrived in Marcus Monday evening and has been busily engaged in making preparations for a successful school year.
The News will issue a special edition next week in recognition of the Pilot Rock plowing match, an annual fall fair event in Cherokee county.
While the yield of corn on an average in this territory will be affected some by the continued dry weather up to this week corn as a whole will be a good crop according to advice coming in.
Eva Healy, RN of Sioux City, is visiting her parents, Mr. & Mrs. James Healey this week.
85 Years Ago -1939
The Wendt family reunion was held Wednesday in Fort Dodge. Those attending from Marcus were Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr, Florence and Dorthy, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Wendt, Mr. & Mrs. Leo Wendt and family and Mrs. Catherine Wendt.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Hamilton left Sunday morning for a week’s visit with Mrs. Hamilton’s sisters, Mr. & Mrs. Bert Bainter of Cameron, Missouri.
A farewell party was held in the home of Dr. and Mrs. R.E. Dubois Saturday evening in honor of Miss LaVonne Guetschow who will leave soon to take nursing training.
The infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed Meylor has been baptized Daniel Joseph.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Louie Wittrock, 61 and employed on the Edwin Hoerman farm place, was injured lat Wednesday morning when a cow with a day old calf at her side fored Mr. Wittrock causing several ribs on his left side besides minor bruises and cuts.
Last Thursday, August 17, Mr. & Mrs. Herman Letsche received a message from the War department telling that their son Pfc. Leland Letsche was killed in action on April 28 at Anzio, Italy.
Cpl. Mark Bancroft, former prominent Marcus attorney who entered services about two years ago, has received his appointment to the Judge Advocate General’s Officers Candidate School at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Chris Petersen, 58 and son of Mr. & Mrs. Anton Petersen, a former Marcus resident, died at his home in San Bernadino, CA.
In a free hitting contest the Marcus Baseball team beat the Maryhill team 12 to 9 at Marcus last Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1949
Dean Petersen, 16 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. William Petersen of Marcus was winner in the 4H Club beef cattle show staged in connection with the Pilot Rock Plowing Match.
Dean Oswald and Kenneth Meehan, Marcus Willing Workers won the demonstration team contest held Thursday in conjunction with the Pilot Rock Plowing Match.
Miss Evelyn Ricker, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Ricker of Marcus, left last Wednesday evening for Dubuque where she will enter the Franciscan order of Sisters.
Mrs, Ben Delaney was pleasantly surprised Sunday evening when a group of relatives called to help celebrate her birthday anniversary.
Because he has been driving petroleum transport 300 miles a day for eight years without a single accident or traffic violation charge a 40 year old Marcus truck driver was selected as “Iowa Driver of the Month” for August. Selection of Alfred Nitzschke, employee of the Marcus Coop Oil Company was made by the courtesy and safety campaign committee of the Iowa Motor Truck Association.

Elon Kamradt, 71, and prominent Amherst township farmer, passed away Saturday at a LeMars hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Loren Stowater are the parents of a son born Thursday, August 19 in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Mary Ellen Kelly of Marcus was awarded one of seventeen Christopher Awards according to an announcement made last week by Father Kelly, director of the Christophers. She has been presented a bronze medallion bearing the famous Christopher watchword “Better to Light One Candle than to Curse the Darkness”
Gary Ohlendorf, son of Mr. & Mrs. Eddie Ohlendorf, had the misfortune to break his leg Friday of last week. He was “breaking” a horse when the accident happened.
A group of twelve Marcus Club Scouts visited the pumping station of the Northern Natural Gas company south of Cleghorn last Thursday.

Sunday evening, August 23, a reception will be held in honor of Rev. Father Robert O’Reilly the newly appointed pastor of Holy Name Church.
The Marcus Lumber Company will soon start construction of a new wood shop on the site of the present building.
Mr. & Mrs. Herb Stowater are parents of a son born on Thursday, August 13 at Sacred Heart hospital.
Lyda Williams was honored on her birthday Saturday afternoon when 27 ladies gather at her home to help her celebrate the occasion.
Mrs. Carl Heesch and Donald returned home Sunday morning from a tow week trip to the west.

Bert Addy, 80, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning at his home in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Alesch are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, August 6 at the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Miss Patt Prunty, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Prunty of Marcus has appeared in four performances of the opera “Turnadot” by Puccini presented by the Indiana University Opera Theatre at Bloomington, Indian this summer.
Prices for 1964 crop soybeans in Cherokee county will be supported at $2.19 per bushel for soybeans grading No. 2 containing 13.8 to 14 percent moisture.
Janet Lehnoff, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Wilmar Lehnoff is representing the Marcus community schools as a candidate for the “Teen Town” Queen at the Iowa State Fair this year.

Mrs. Rose Kestel, 73, passed away Tuesday morning at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a lingering illness.
Kenwood Prunty, son of Mr. & Mrs. Kenwood Prunty of Marcus received his MA degree from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls on August 1.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Sand, Monica and Dean attended the World War II 4th Field Hospital Unit reunion held August 8 and 9 at the Blue Horizon in Clear Lake. Bob was a sergeant in the unit.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Roethler of Hanover Park, Illinois are the parents of a son born Tuesday, August 5.
Mrs. Rhoda Grauer, wife of Vernon Grauer of Marcus, graduated form Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE on August 15 receiving the Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in English literature.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mrs. Wylie Satterlee of Marcus died August 18, 1974 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. & Mrs. W.G. Rattray married in Marcus will be celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 25. An open house will be held in their honor in their home in Sioux City.
Herman Hueser, 77, passed away Tuesday night at the Happy Siesta Retirement Home in Remsen following a six month illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger McIntosh of Bakerfield, CA are parents of their first child a daughter born at 9:15 p.m. August 13 at the Greater Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. William Bass, 88 of Marcus died August 17 at a LeMars Hospital.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Nagles Apparel, Ye Olde Style Diner and Snyder Tap are three Marcus businesses to change ownership here in recent months, First in line of the transaction was the sale of Nagle’s Apparel to Mr. & Mrs. Gregory Geerdes of West Union, Iowa. The second business established to have changed hands was the sale of the Ye Olde Style Diner to Mr. & Mrs. Larry Mullally of Aurelia. The last of the three business places to change hands has been for sale of Synder’s Tap to a group of four persons from the Marcus area. They include Jim Alesch, Pat Collins, Jean Tentinger, and Boze Rassmussen.
Mr. & Mrs. Scott Goodmanson of Albert Lea, MN announce the arrival of a son born July 17.
Meriden Cleghorn varsity cheerleaders attended the All-Star Cheerleader attended and All Star Cheerleaders Camp held last week at Westmar College in LeMars.
Tamara Jo Miller has been named to the academic honor roll for the fourth quarter at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. Tamara is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Miller of Marcus.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Richard Murphy of Pierson, a son.
