Valeska Kirchoff was married at Portland, Ore., June 10 to Lieutenant Frank J. Stamper.
Walter Corbett has been elected the new town mayor following the resignation of J. P. Evans.
H. A. Underhill of Greeley, Cob., has been elected manual training instructor of Marcus high school.
Floyd V. Nagle, Charles A. Niemann, Peter J. Flynn, Louis Kirchoff, Walter Sylvester, and Neal Burke have volunteered to train auto mechanics at the State University in Texas.
Ruth Hazen, 2 1/2, walked into the sickle of the mower being used by her father on July 4 and severed both legs above the ankle.
100 Years Ago – 1923
The Marcus Booster Club, Illinois Central R.R., Edmonds & Londergan and Gund companies, Mich & Kass, Delaneys, Sjostroms, Becks, Evans and many others donated enough money to gravel forty streets in the town of Marcus.
P. P. Holm was appointed to succeed R.J. Pattison as mayor.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Gingerich were honored on the Fourth of July by their children in observance of their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Mildred Johnson will be the new assistant primary teacher in Marcus public school next year.
95 Years Ago -1928
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ehlers are the parents of a son born July 8.
Delaney Bros. are sponsoring a large sale advertised this week. Among the ten big prizes include a $100.00 bedroom suite being given away.
Mr. and Mrs. Sigurd Nelson are the parents of twin daughters born on July 5.
Leo Bird was awarded first prize in the drawing held July 3, when $50 worth of merchandise given by the Marcus News was awarded.
A son, Raymond Thomas, born Thursday, July 5, to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Niemann.
85 Years Ago -1938
Jacob Kelsch fell from the top of his barn to the floor receiving a fractured collar bone and smashed nose.
Edna Datisman of Inwood has been elected first grade teacher of the public school for the 1938-39 year.
Mark and Kenneth Bancroft purchased the Dan Smith farm southwest of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Aage Miller are parents of a son born July 11 in the Sacred Heart Hospital at Le Mars.
Rev. Norbert Georges O.P. arrived from New York City after spending a year in Lima, Peru.
J. C. Rae was recently delivered a six-foot McCormick Deering combine from Olson & Apel.

Forrest Marshall and a crew of men will help next week with farmers of the community who are shocking grain.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Baumgartel are parents of a son, Marvin Keith, born July 6.
Private Lloyd Cronin, Edgar Hagey HA 1/c, Cpl. Roy Specht, Sgt. Lawrence French, Ronald Waggoner of the Coast Guard and Pfc. Merle Baumgardner are home on furloughs this week from various branches of the Armed Service.
Rev. John Christensen of Audubon has accepted a call to the Nazareth Lutheran Church succeeding the Rev. Fred Jacobsen.
Nancy Ann Ziegler was honored on her 8th birthday Tuesday at a party for 14 guests.
75 Years Ago -1948
Robert Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Olson, returned Saturday from. Camp Foster, Spirit Lake, where he has been the past month acting as counselor of the boys’ cabin group.
Louis C. Means, 45, passed away at his home following an extended illness.
Leo Bird completed the purchase of the tavern and pool hall in Marcus known as Flanagan’s Place. The Birds plan to move to the place in east Marcus which they bought from Frank McQueen, this spring and their son, Bill, will farm the place northeast of Marcus.
Bill Pedersen was elected commander of the Marcus Post of the American Legion, succeeding Mark Bancroft.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. John Leavitt are the parents of a son, Robert Gary, born July 9 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars.
Frances Benedict and Beverly! Simons, who were the delegates from the Amherst Busy Bees, attended the 4-H Camp at the Walther League Camp at Okoboji.
Leon Bentz started work Monday at the De Vries Motor Company here as bookkeeper and parts man. He will replace Howard Flanagan, who plans to leave for California August 1.
The Marcus Merchants and a team of recent Marcus stars will meet in a benefit softball game. The proceeds to go to Leon Ebert. Leon, the second baseman, received a broken jaw during a recent game.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard JuhI purchased the house Percy Means sold at auction and are having a basement dug on Sunset Hill. where it will be located.
65 Years Ago -1958
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Dorr became parents of a girl, Cynthia Kay, born July 7.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Nervig announce the arrival of a daughter, Beverly Jean, born July 17.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Golden of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 3 oz. daughter, Lori Lee, born Tuesday, July 8. She has a brother and a sister.
Pfc. Jerry Galles arrived home the 4th of July to spend a ten day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Err Galles.
Maurice Ricker and his mother, Mrs. Elmer Ricker, returned home. Maurice has been hospitalized since May 21 at St. Vincent’s and St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Sioux City. He is making a speedy recovery after is second brain surgery.
DeVera Mae Wendt and Roger Broderick are planning a wedding on Wednesday, August 20, in Holy Name Church, Marcus.
Dick Eyers of the Old Barn reports 15 more boys than girls are registered for dance classes there.

Mrs. Clarence Woodall has moved into the home she recently purchased from Mr. and Mrs. M. W. McCoy.
Miss Evelyn Lucille Drefke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Drefke, and Norman H. Rasmussen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rasmussen, were united in matrimony June 16 at Peace Lutheran Church.
A rose bud was put on the pulpit Sunday morning to announce the birth of a daughter, Karen Lee, to Mr. and Mrs. Max Mugge of Cleghorn on July 16.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Miller of Cleghorn had their baby daughter baptized. She was christened Barbara June, born June 13. Her sponsors were Mrs. Howard Jenness of Cherokee and Miss Marcia Burow of Cushing.

Doug Lauters is in Camp Ripley, Minn., for two weeks’ tour of active duty with his reserve unit.
A 7 lb. 11 oz. son was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Alesch July 11. He has been named Keith Allen.
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Rutter are the parents of a 4 lb. 8 oz. son, Andrew John, born June 25.
Three Marcus young men left last week for South Korea with elements of the 185th Tactical Group of Sioux City. They are Don Drefke, Doug Rutter and Ray Johnson.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lang of Remsen announce the engagement of their daughter, Diane Joyce, to James Nicholas Ruden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Ruden.
Bonnie Louise Rupp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rupp, became the bride of Keith Allen Bratcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Bratcher of Kansas City, Mo., on May 25, 1968.

Bruce Hohbach, Kay Krekow, Mark Bierman and Mark Main were confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Tim Cronin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cronin, will be a freshman student at Iowa Lakes Community College this fall.
An open miscellaneous shower for Sharon Flanagan, bride-to-be of Keith DeMers, will be held July 17 in the Holy Name Hall.
Miss Jane Elizabeth Pick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Pick, and Paul M. Busch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch Sr., were married June 16 at Holy Name church.
Mrs. Margaret Scott and Godfred Nelson were united in marriage June 30 at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Kenneth Hilt officiating.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Jill Ducommun and Robert Thompson, Jr. exchanged marriage vows June 10th at Cherokee. Jill graduated from Meriden-Cleghorn in 1975. They will make their home at Sioux Falls where he is employed in the Police Department.
Ron Collins and Jeff Hiller, both recent graduates of Marcus Community High, attended Orientation at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, June 21.
Anne Bindner of Marcus was named to the Dean’s List of the College of Business Administration at Creighton University. Omaha.
Quenlin Reifenrath, new principal at Meriden-Cleghorn, received permission from the school board to paint the school-owned house he will be occupying.
High winds and twister-like conditions struck south of Marcus Wednesday night, July 5. Many trees were lost and damage to building and crops was moderate.
40 Years Ago –1983
Roberta Kurth of LeMars and Leon Pottebaum of Granville are planning a November 5th wedding at LeMars. Leon farms and also works at Marcus Lumber Yard.
One hundred eight descendants of the Win. and Mary (Norton) Meehan family gathering a the Marcus Park on July 3 for a reunion and to celebrate the 85th birthday of Esther (Meehan) Radcliffe. Relatives from Canada nod all over the U.S.A. attended.
John P. Barry, 67, of Marcus passed away Tuesday, July 12, alter a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, four sons, a brother and a sister.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Pallesen treated their parents to dinner Tuesday evening. July b in honor of their 35th wedding anniversary Mrs. Marie Pallesen, Ken’s mother, was also present.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Of the 22 members of the Marcus Fire Department, ten are certified EMT’s and nine are ERTs. During January to July, they answered 30 ambulance calls, 8 fire calls and 3 accident calls.
Former Marcusite Bob Clarkson and Crystal Hall are planning a November wedding at Ponte Vedra. Florida, where they will make their home.
25 Years Ago – 1998
The Marcus Fire Department is celebrating its 100 years of service to the Marcus Community – 1893-1993.
Nay and Lori Means of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 8 oz. eon, Mitchell Anthony, born July 12. He has a sister at home.
MMC parents. Coaches and patrons are contemplating an all weather, slate of the art, to replace the outdated Kalite track at a cost of about $80,000.
The Marcus Jaycees 4th of July volleyball tournament was a great success with Marty Irwin’s team winning first, Terry Ames’ team placed second and Nate Nelson’s team third.
