130 Years Ago -1893
B. Radcliffe is building an addition to his commodious residence.
George Bell is now a traveling salesman for the LeMars Mills.
Several new residences are in the course of erection here.
125 Years Ago -1898
Louis Nelson has made several changes in his popular lively stable.
The continued cold weather has retarded farming operations a great deal.
Marcus continues to prosper with more building being done.
120 Years Ago -1903
The Marcus Mills shipped out four carloads of flour last week and are running day and night to fill their orders.
E.J. Edmonds and family are at Los Angeles, Calif. His health has improved but says Cherokee County is superior to anything he has seen on the coast.
A large amount of cement sidewalk will be put in here during the summer.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Horses are still bringing fancy prices — Charles Brown sold three head of colts coming two this spring for $675. Joe Heines sold two colts coming three years old for $450. Frank Wirt also of Amherst sold two head of coming three years olds for $370.
John Bird expects to leave for Cut Knife, Saskatchewan, Canada, to visit for several months as nearly al of his family are there.
110 Years Ago – 1913
John McCarthy, who recently sold his pool hall in Marcus to S. Ingersoll, has purchased the billiard hall located in the Clark block at Cherokee.
Miss Pearline May Springer of Cleghorn and John Maurer of Chicago were married in her parents home. After a wedding trip to Niagara Falls, they will be at home at Chicago after May 15.
Mrs. Stella M. Kennedy of Washta was awarded $7,500 by the Illinois Central Railroad in the death of her husband in a train wreck, January 6, 1912.
105 Years Ago -1918
Tilden Township held a Liberty Loan meeting at Fielding Hall on April 5.
Wendell Anderson, who is very ill with pneumonia, is being cared for by a specially trained nurse.
W.J. Kearney of Remsen will become the new depot agent in Marcus in two weeks.
Margaret Montgomery was reelected county superintendent of schools.
95 Years Ago -1928
Marcus Public School won first place in the Cherokee County spelling contest for the third time. Marvel Home was the winner on the word victuals.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Toner are the proud parents of a daughter born March 30.
Lorne and Beryl Collins, who attend Creighton University at Omaha, are spending Easter vacation with their father.
85 Years Ago -1938
Paul Norris of Holy Name won second place for the third time in the Cherokee County Spelling contest. Thelma Bork of Marcus Public placed third. Both young people will participate in the Interstate Contest at a later date.
Edna Groepper of Remsen and William Dunne of Kingsley were wed at Remsen on March 27.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Johnson of Tilden Township are rejoicing over the arrival of their great-grandson, Thomas Edward Delaney, born March 28. He is the son of Tom and Shirley (Johnson) Delaney.
Lillian Foley of San Francisco, Calif., is spending a two weeks vacation with her parents here, Mr. and Mrs. John Foley. Lillian is employed by the South Pacific railroad.
75 Years Ago -1948
Superintendent Harold Wood and eight members of the present faculty of Marcus High School have returned signed contracts to the Board for next year.
Emil Engelbrecht, owner of the Coffee Shop, bought a lot from J.C. Means across the street, north of the Marcus Hotel. He plans to build a hollow tile double garage and equip it for living quarters.
The American Legion plans to dedicate the servicemen’s memorial on Decoration Day. The plot is not complete yet.
John Irwin has started construction on a new blacksmith shop on the lots west of Dorr’s Hatchery and Produce.
70 Years Ago -1953
Charles Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Scott left Monday for Des Moines where he took a physical to join the Air Force. He will go to Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas for 15 weeks of basic training.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Flanagan are the parents of a 7 lb. 8 oz. daughter, born April 1. She has two sisters and a brother.
Joe Hey has been in the process of moving his leather store to the front of the old Seegar building, now owned by Carl Klingborg.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Van Buskirk and daughter returned to their Yokima, Washington, home after spending two weeks visiting in the Tom Carney home and with other relatives. Earl Carney accompanied them to Washington.
65 Years Ago -1958
Rock Island Lumber Company in Marcus celebrated their 100th years in business. They had an open house so the public could meet the new manager, Charles Rayburn.
Mrs. Claude Grey reports a total of $436.75 collected in the Red Cross drive here.
Mrs. Joe Collins and Joe Waggenar departed for Shelbina, Missouri to attend the funeral of their brother-in-law, George O’Toole.
Mrs. Floyd Nagle was honored on her birthday Friday evening by a group of ladies who gathered in her home.
60 Years Ago -1963
Colleen Whealon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Whealon, is a patient in St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, Sioux City, suffering from rheumatic fever.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hinspeter observed their 50th wedding anniversary as they hosted a family dinner on March 24 in the Marcus Municipal Building.
Clarkson’s IGA Food Market is planning its 18th anniversary this weekend. John Clarkson, owner, originally purchased the business in 1945 from the late JA. Michaelson. John had worked for him for many years. Other specials include: 4 cans of cherry pie mix $1.00, six cans of Butter Kernel corn, peas or green beans $1.00, and five 10 oz. packs of frozen strawberries $1.00.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mrs. Mary Collins, 82, died Thursday evening, March 28, in her farm home northwest of Marcus. She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn and Claire, a sister and a brother.
Vane Healy, 70, a life long area resident, died early Saturday morning, March 30. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers.
Several Marcus students will be appearing in the musical operetta “Pirates of Penzance” on April 6 and 7 in St. Mary’s High School at Remsen. There is a cast of 80 and a 30 member stage band will accompany the choruses.
The Marcus Gold Clubhouse will begin serving breakfast every Sunday morning on April 7.
50 Years Ago -1973
Miss Lois Brown, a missionary at Nigeria, Africa, for 25 years, will be the guest speaker at the April 13th meeting of the Cleghorn Presbyterian Friendship Guild. She is a native of Ireton and is spending a year in the States and will return to Nigeria in June.
Barbara Jo Snyder of Marcus and Patrick Gossen of Des Moines are planning a May 12th wedding.
Specials at Ken’s Foodland include a 2 lb. can of Folger’s coffee, $1.59; 10 Texas Red Grapefruit, 79¢; a quart of Salad Bowl salad dressing, 39¢; and Falstaff Beer $1.98/12 pack.
45 Years Ago – 1978
The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors agreed to provide $15,000 toward the purchase of a new rescue truck for the Marcus Fire Department. A fund drive will be held to raise the sum of $8,000 to cover the $23,000 cost.
Donna Drefke of Marcus has qualified for the State Spelling Bee to be held Saturday, May 6, in Dowling High School at West Des Moines. Donna placed third at Sheldon.
Coaches Martin and Benton and ten senior girls headed for Des Moines on Friday, March 10, to attend the Girls State Basketball Tournament.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dorr will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 10, with an open house in the Trinity Lutheran Church parlors, rural Marcus.
Carol Hanson and Jeff Mitts, both of Glenwood, announce their engagement and approaching marriage in June. Jeff is the son of Jon and Doris Mitts of Marcus.
The Meriden-Cleghorn Jazz Band will perform at Ames in the state contest this week.
Pilot Rock Chapter of DAR met April 2 in the Gertrude Quinn home at Cherokee with 24 present. Mrs. Wayne Bennett of Galva gave a slide presentation and told anecdotes and other information on Iowa’s First Ladies.
Gregory Johnson, Sandy Brown Johnson and Darlene Yockey are featured in the Marcus Senior Spotlight.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Marcus received $10,739.00 in taxes from IPS for the second half of its 1986 assessment.
Clifford and Margaret Ferrin of Marcus will be honored on their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house and dance on Saturday, April 16th, in the Marcus Community Center.
Roger Nelson of Marcus has filed nomination papers for Cherokee County Supervisor from District Two.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Fred Ducommun of Cleghorn will celebrate his 90th birthday on Sunday, April 11 – Easter Sunday Fred was involved with the Cleghorn State Bank for 56 years.
Missy Gaskill of Meriden and Brian Shea of Marcus are planning a July 11th wedding in Holy Name Catholic Church.
Alan Ruden of Marcus, a junior at the University of Northern Iowa, is taking an international business course at the University of Aalborg in Denmark. He will be there until the middle of June.
Harold and Anna Mae Ladenthin were married at Hinton on April 13, 1943. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary with an open house on Sunday, April 18,
