130 Years Ago -1893
The furnace in the Methodist Church has given no end of trouble and nearly set the church on fire last Sunday. It will be thrown out and a new one installed.
Dr. Prosser has disposed of his practice, house and lot, etc. to Dr. E. Loomis of Storm Lake.
Mr. James Healy and Miss Katie Garvin, both of Marcus Township, were united in marriage February 1 by Rev. Father O’Reilly in the Catholic Church.
125 Years Ago -1898
Our friend, John H. Dunn, who lives northwest of Marcus, has been contemplating a trip to the Klondike region. His wife presented him with a ten pound live nugget a boy, so John will not visit the frozen north.
F.A. Lewis, editor of the Marcus News, was appointed post master at Marcus.
E.A. Simons and Jemima Macindo of Tilden Township were married in the bride’s home on February 9. They will settle down on a farm near their parents.
110 Years Ago -1903
Wm. Poston, 39, of Marcus was killed in a bad train wreck near Chicago. He leaves a wife and seven small children. Lewis Ducommun of Cleghorn, George Billings, George Hooper and N.T. Wells of Marcus were seriously injured. Scott Zink, Frank Wirt and Charles Bass, all of Marcus, were slightly injured. Four cars of hogs were burned.
The ice harvest is about complete in Marcus. The quality is first class.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Miss Winnie Toomey and Earl Cox attended a dance at Storm Lake Friday evening. The Collins Bros. orchestra furnished the music. Miss Cora Loutsch, who is teaching near Sac City was also in Storm Lake that evening.
Dr. and Mrs. M.F. Joynt attended the wedding of his brother, Dr. Robert Joynt of LeMars and Miss Mayme A. Teefey of Sioux City, on Tuesday at Sioux City.
The Meriden Cornet Band furnished music at the skating rink in Cherokee Monday evening.
James Williams and Will A. Henry will hold their 17th annual brood sow sale on Wednesday, February 12 and will sell 50 head of sows.
S.M. Wixcel, committee chairman of the Marcus Corn Show, reports about 100 entries and proceeds were over $51.00.
105 Years Ago -1918
Means Bros. are holding a closing out auction sale on their farm 1/2 mile west of Marcus on February 23.
Opening night at the Idle Hour Theatre was attended by 80 persons.
Three young men were seriously injured on their way to the R. Luchterhandt home. Carl Weink suffered a broken arm, George Rassel had a leg broken and Don Claybaugh hurt both a leg and an arm. They were driving a team of horses who became frightened of a dog and ran away. The buggy upset and they were thrown against a tree.
95 Years Ago -1928
Mrs. Sam Schessler was killed instantly in a car-train accident at LeMars.
The sub-county declamatory contest resulted in Hilda Ilten placing 1st in Ortorical; Wendell Anderson, humorous; and Dorothy McDaniel, dramatic.
85 Years Ago -1938
Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Drefke moved to the Henry Diegel farm southwest of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Burch are the parents of a 7 1/2 lb. baby girl, Mardell Arlene.
George Treinen won a lifetime membership to Aloha Beach and Country Club on the shores of Lake Elsinore, Calif. while attending a stock show.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Miss Eleanore Reed spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reed. She departed for Seattle, Wash., where she will work in the shipyards as a welder.
Mr. and Mrs. George Rutter are the parents of a son born Saturday, January 30. He is named John Thomas.
Shirley Klingbeil received her “cap” on February 2. She is in nurses training in the Lutheran Hospital at Sioux City.
Mr. and Mrs. Ab Anderson are parents of twin boys born last week. They are named Max Leon and Marty Lee. The boys will remain in the hospital at Cherokee until they can be cared for at home.
75 Years Ago -1948
Arthur J. Swanson, 70, a long time farmer near Marcus, died after suffering a fall on the ice. He was visiting on his farm four miles north and 1 1/2 miles east of Marcus. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
The Dorr Hatchery opened its doors in the ground floor of the Dorr building that houses Rex’s Alleys in the basement.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Puhrman and sons moved into the home here they purchased from Mrs. Clara Nafziger. The John Clarkson family, who had lived there, moved into the apartment above the Clarkson Grocery.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bancroft and daughter, Nancy, moved into their newly completed home in the southeast part of Marcus.
70 Years Ago -1953
The Roberson Produce buying station in the Nield building has closed.
Robert Wallin, Jr., infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wallin, and one of their twin boys, was taken to a Sioux City specialist. He has a virus infection in his lungs.
The Soda Lunch here invites you to drop in and take home a half gallon of vanilla or cherry vanilla Wells ice cream for 98¢.
The interior walls of the new theatre here have been erected and work is progressing nicely.
65 Years Ago -1958
Ed Christensen, who farms north of Marcus, will sell his equipment and stock at auction on February 19. Vernon Donner will farm the land.
The front of the Niemann Jewelry here is being covered with highly-finished enamel panels. The Carl Klingborg crew is doing the work.
Mr. and Mrs. John Leavitt are the parents of a 7 lb. 14 oz. boy, born, February 10. He has been named James William.
Eric Pearson of Marcus and Larry Eriek of Cherokee departed on an extended trip to Europe. They flew to Copenhagan, Denmark, where Eric will visit his 85 year old mother, who he has not seen for 30 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ebert and family moved to Iowa City where Vernon has enrolled in Engineering at the University, He will major in chemistry.
60 Years Ago -1963
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cronin are the parents of an 8 lb. 15 oz. daughter, born Friday, January 25. She has been named Barbara Lynn and has four brothers and four sisters.
Holy Name Wildcats won a cliffhanger at Westfield in overtime 57 to 55 with Rupp making 22 points.
Cathy and Karen Nilles of Remsen returned to their parental home at Remsen after spending a week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Delaney, here.
55 Years Ago -1968
Marcia Qualls of Marcus Community High has been chosen to represent Northwest Iowa in the D.A.R. good girl citizen award contest. She will compete with five other girls for the title.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zangger will be honored on their 50th wedding anniversary on February 11 at Cypress, Calif. They were married in the chapel of Holy Name School at Marcus on February 11 1918.
Gayle McIntosh, Doug French and Bruce Nelson represented Meriden-Cleghorn at the Northwest Iowa Band Festival at Cherokee Saturday.
Specials at Mighty Mite IGA include 3 lb. can of Butternut coffee-$1.79; lettuce-19¢ head; and red potatoes-a 20 lb. bag for 59¢.
A Sweetheart Dance, sponsored by the Marcus Community Junior Class, will be held Friday, February 16, after the Marcus-St. Mary’s basketball game. A king and queen will be crowned.
50 Years Ago -1973
Kathleen Weber of Marcus has earned a 4.0 average at St. Teresa College at Winona, Minn. where she is a sophomore.
Mrs. Ducommun of Cleghorn Will give the program at Fellowship Lounge on Tuesday, February 13. She Will share her recent trip to the Holy Land.
The Marcus wrestlers Varsity team has an 11-0 record and the JV are 12-0 for the season.
Barbara Meehan became the bride of Dennis George on Saturday, January 27, in Holy Name Church, Marcus. They will make their home at Minneapolis where Barb is an RN, at Hennepin County General Hospital and Dennis is employed with the Edina public school system.
Leonard Dreckman, Betty Massman and Debbie Canes are featured in the Senior Personalities this week.
45 Years Ago – 1978
The Charles Rosburg Memorial Foundation voted to give an award to the outstanding senior girl athlete scholar. It will be known as the “Ruth Witter Award.” $2,000 will be raised to cover the cost of a $150 scholarship grant.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Johnston of rural Cleghorn returned home from a two-week cruise from New York City to Los Angeles via the Panama Canal, a 9,700 mile trip.
40 Years Ago –1983
The twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harman III, Melissa and Melanie, of rural Marcus celebrated their seventh birthdays on February 6th.
The Cleghorn City Council voted to raise their water rates by 10%.
Mr. Collins and Mrs. Grauer’s fourth grade classes visited the local bank, They watched the coin counting machines at work.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Oliver and Mary (Edgar) Miller will celebrate their 40th (Ruby) wedding anniversary with an open house at Grace United Methodist Church. Marcus, on Sunday, February 21st.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Cave are the parents of a 9 lb. 12 1/2 oz. son, Craig Phillip, born February 6. He has a sister and a brother at home.
The Cleghorn Centennial Committee has Centennial mugs on sale for $5 each.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Hazel Rupp received the Roy Johnson Memorial Award from the Marcus Fair Board for her outstanding contributions and dedication to the Marcus Fair.
Mrs. Lorna Leavitt is the head girls basketball coach at MMC and is pleased with the girls attitudes in adjusting to “five on five.” The girls overall record is 9-7.
