105 Years Ago – 1917
The Henry Bejasch 160 acres east of Fielding was sold to John Woodall for $200.00 per acre.
Marie Fry went to Primghar last week where she will teach Home Econimics in the high school.
The Collins Brother orchestra played for a Labor Day picnic at Alsen S. Dakota.
Up to the present time, we think Harve Means holds the record for blow-outs. He started for Plover, but only got as far as Albert City, having had on puncture and seven blow-outs.
Grandmother, Mrs. Ora Seeley, fell 10 feet whil assisting her son in th ecorn crib, fracturing a bone in her foot.
The News received word that work could be started on the new brick depot by the first of October.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Marcus will play the first football fame of the season with many new faces. Only five lettermen are returning, namely Lee Kirchoff, Forest Drefke, Merle Hamad, Lloyd 7and Ernest Wink.
Kittenball promoters in Marcus have arranged a kittenball tourney to be held at the Marcus playground.
Georges Pharmacy has announced that they have opened a rental library.
85 Years Ago -1937
Dr. C.H. Swift, local health officer, announced that the quarantine ban would be lifted in Marcus when the two schools will be opened.
This community has always been know for good cooks. At the plowing match lst week, Mrs. Ora Seeley won first on her angel food cake, while Mrs. Emil Carlson won first on both bread and cinnamon rolls.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Mr. & Mrs. Ted Ohlendorf arrived by plane from Bethnay, California, this week to visit.
A farewell picnic was given Sunday in honor of Don Nestor who has enlisted in the Navy.
Hot Shots this week at Nagle’s Food Store offer two pounds of cookies at 35 cents, five bars of toilet soap for 25 cents and a pound of bacon for 29 cents.
75 Years Ago -1947
The garage in back of the Axel Vikander home, a block east of Main Street, was damaged by fire Tuesday afternoon, apparently catching fire from a burning trash barrel.
Walter Dorr of Remsen showed the grand champion boar at the Marcus Livestock and Industrial Show. It was a Poland China. Bob Meyer with a Berkshire received the grand champion in the gilt class.
Roger H. Cook, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Cook, has been advanced to seaman first class, U.S. Navy.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Herb Stowater has been the highest paid worker in town the last couple days. He has been crawling around he top of the Farmers Co-operative elevator, some 80 feet off the ground, installing two cupolas and putting on a new roof.
A 52nd Wedding anniversary dinner was given in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Hueser in Quimby.
Gus Carlson, Aaron Alm, George Gottsche and Donald Smith of Cleghorn returned last week from a fishing trip to Jackfish Lake in Canada.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Nagle are now living in their new home in the southesast part of town.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Loren Kaufman announce the arrival of a son, Randall Wayne, born September 5.
Dick Means has resigned his position with the Marcus branch of the Rock Island Company to take a similar post with the Thompson Lumber Company of Truesdale.
Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Pritts observed their 57th wedding anniversary September 13th.
The Marcus Fire Department was called four miles south of town to extinguish a fire in the interior of Louis Miller’s car, apparently caused by gasoline leaking onto the tail pipe.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Chuck Sand, Merle Spieler and Joe Block arrived home last Saturday after six months active duty in the U.S. Army.
Nuptial vows were exchanged at Faith Lutheran Church at Marcus, September 2, by Carolyn Lee Juhl, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Juhl, and Clifton R. Albrecht, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Albrecht of Odebolt.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Bierman of near Fielding were pleasantly surprised Tuesday evening at a surprise party given by their children and their families honoring them on their 45th wedding anniversary.
Grauer Radio and TV has installed a two-way radio system for the Community Cooperative Oil Co. this being the eighth such sysstem installed in town.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mrs. Bill Horstman announces the engagement of her daughter, Jean to Ted Crouchley, son of Col. and Mrs. E.A. Crouchley of Omaha, NE
Faith Lutheran Church, Marcus, was the scene for the lovely wedding of Patricia Pearson of Marcus and Robert Klingbeil of Remsen.
Rosemary Whealon, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Whealon, and a student at Creighton Memorial St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, was among the 70 members of the class to receive their first stripe on their caps.
The town of Marcus has received a check for $115,000 from the Farm and Home Administration as a loan for the water tower water main improvement.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Garvin were honored on their Silver Wedding Anniversary with a family gathering at the home of Mrs. Garvin’s broter-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Edmund Corzelius.
Mrs. Vincent (Lucella) Garvin’s the Senior Citizen for September. Lucella taught school in rural Marcus and Amherst townships for seven years.
Terry Busse is one of four new students who came to Marcus high school this year.
30 Years Ago –1977
The old fashioned parlor in the north window of Nagle’s Apparel has been arranged to call attention to the nationwide observance of constitution week from 11-24.
Charles A. Niemann died on September 8, 1977 at St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City after an extended illness. He lived most of his life in Marcus, was a WWI veteran and retired plumber.
Lowell Anderson, president of the Marcus Jaycees, presents a check to Mrs. Godfrey Nelsen on behalf of the Jaycees in the amount of $100 to be used for the Senior Citizens newly installed air conditioner unit.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Steve and Julie Boever of Brookings are the proud parents of a son, Michael Joseph, born Tuesday. August 31. Grandparents are Mrs. Geraldine Boever and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Carney.
Mrs. R.J. Joint returned to her home in Rochester, NY after spending a week with her mother, Mrs. L.J. McGivern and attending the reunion of the 1947 Holy Name graduating class.
Mary Hagey is the Mental Health Institue Employee of th emonth, after working as a Custodial Worker for eight years.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Wurth Hardware is pleased to announce they have changed to the “Hardware Hank” Company to offer a better selection of merchandise and more competitive pricing.
The farm of Vance B. and Dorotha (Williams) Marquis was honored as a Century Farm at ceremonies held at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on August 25, 1987.
The local Pizza Ranch celebrated their 1st anniversary on Saturday, September 26, with prizes and specials.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Homecoming Theme at MMC was “Hard to Handle” Brian Scott and Jodi Ehrig were crowned King and Queen. Neva Witter was the first parade marshal of MMC’s Homecoming.
Meriden recognized Karen Egger, Naomi Kintigh and Edie Sechler for their added responsiblities in MMC School District.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Tim and Margie Erdman are the parents fo a son, Derek William, born October 1st. He weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces and has 2 brothers at home.
Marcus experienced some rather interesting weather changes Monday afternoon October 13th when it rained, hailed and snowed.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Harold and JoAnn Means will celebrate theri 50th wedding anniversary on October 26.
