110 Years Ago – 1912
The Nels Anderson family of Cherokee chose Marcus as their future home purchasing the Arthur Day home her for $4000.
Joe Waller is driving a fine new Oakland six recently purchased.
Stanley Addy sowed four acres of wheat from which he threshed two hundred bushels.
A revolver, two flashlights, pocket knife and razor were stolen from the H. Niemann hardware store.
Geroge Grauer purchased the farm of Charles Brower in Amherst for $30,400.
105 Years Ago – 1917
The Marcus News was founded September 23, 1882 by a J.A. Parks and is celebrating its golden jubilee next week.
C. I. Hagean of Sioux City has purchased the equipment of the Argonne Café and will reopen under the name of the Marcus cafe.
Interviews with old timers reveal that William Campbell was Marcus first postmaster, Fred Collier was the first furniture dealer and mortician and J.P. Roe the first livery stable proprietor.
Announcement is made of the marriage of Mable Mary O’Toole to Edward Peterson of Cleghorn on Aug. 22.
85 Years Ago -1937
Kathryn Ryan and John Dose were united in Marriage at Sioux City Thursday, August 12.
Marcus is to receive the $67,000 grant from the government for street improvements.
Mrs. Carl Grauer was hostess to a large shower Wednesday in honor of Dorothy Nitzschke whose marriage will take place to Harold Presuhn.
Frank Webber is having $1000 worth of improvements made on his farm home three miles east of Marcus.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Robert Reed and Lyle Rae won the grand prize in the Kiddie Parade for the most original entry with an army jeep at the colt show.
Gleen Reimers has enlisted as a naval aviation cadet in the USN reserve. He has bee employed in the telephone company at Schaller.
Ann Schern and Red Skelton are starring in “Maisie Gets Her Man”, showing at the Lyric.
75 Years Ago -1947
The Marcus Fire department was called to the Lester Briggs farm five miles south of town Monday afternoon to extinguish a fire in a stack of chopped hay, apparently caused by internal combustion. A large barn was destroyed by a similar fire on the Briggs farm a year ago.
The basement has been dug for a new home for Mr. & Mrs. Ben Ohlendorf in south Marcus just north of Mrs. Rosch home.
The Idle Hour Café in Marcus closed up Saturday evening, the building having been sold. Mr. & Mrs. Ted Berg, the owners are disposing of the stock and fixtures.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Joe Wankum, Marcus garage operator, was severely burned about 7:15 Saturday evening by a gasoline explosion.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Wendt were pleasantly surprised in their home, when friends and relatives came to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Ernest Nelson of Wellesley, Mass., purchased the hatchery division of the Dorr Hatchery and Produce, and the new firm is now in operation in the building occupied by the hatchery.
Leonard Collins, who has had shore duty for the past three years at Washington.
A meeting will be held to discuss securing a theatre for our town.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Otto Killhorn, 53, lost his life when his tractor upset, pinning him to the ground and causing immediate death.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Meehan of Des Moines announce the arrival of a son, Michael Dean, born September 2.
Bus Jenness, Marcus farmer, fractured a bone in his foot last Thursday. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Wilcox of Cleghorn observed their 25th Wedding anniversary on August 25, with an open house at their home.
Chocolate doughnuts are advertised at Baumann’s Home Bakery in Marcus at 40¢ per dozen.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Tom Schlenger, 10 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Lorne Schlenger, escaped serious injuries Saturday morning at their farm home when he was kicked in the face by a pony.
Barbara Peterson has accepted a position as office girl at the Lynn Feed Store and began her duties Wednesday.
Mr. & Mrs. LeRoy Brownmiller are the parents of a daughter, Cynthia Ann, born September 11th at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Ground breaking ceremonies for a new educational unit were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus, during the morning worship service.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Nelson honored their daughter, Bobbie on her seventh birthday with a dinner party.
The Marland features Paul Newman in the shoe “Hombre” this weekend.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Beverly Jaminet, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Jaminet of rural Cherokee, and Roger McIntosh, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle McIntosh of rural Cleghorn, were married August 26th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.
The enrollment for the Marcus Community School district this year is 817 students.
Chad, 4 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Al Sand, was treated and released from the hospital on Sunday after being hit by a car on Railroad St.
30 Years Ago –1977
The Grand Meadow Heritage Center will soon feature a new show – a toy show with their old fashioned Christmas tree.
Marcus Congregate Meals celebrated their 1st anniversary.
Betty Knudson was elected president of the school board. Other members include Jack Shea, Jerry Meylor, Robert Carnes and Kent Erickson.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Junior Whitehead remains in the intensive care unit at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City as the result of a fall from a grain bin on his farm last Saturday.
Deb and Brian Richardson of Kingsley are the proud parents of their third child, a son, Joel Paul. He has two brothers to welcome him home.
First Presbyterian Church of Cleghorn will celebrate its 100th birthday on Sunday, September 18th.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Centennial plans are underway at Cleghorn for 1990 to celebrate their 100th anniversary.
Mrs. Martha Townsend of Cherokee will be honored at an open house to celebrate her 100th birthday on Sunday, September 20th.
The Marcus High School team suffered their first conference loss to LeMars by a score of 37-12.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Lowell Nelson, 84, died Friday, September 11th, after a long illness. Burial was in Marcus Amherst cemetery. Survivors inslude his wife, 2 sons and 2 sisters.
Tom and Nancy Harman are the parents of an 8 pound 9 ounce daughterm Madison Marie, born Septemeber 14th. She has 2 brothers at home.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Over 43 fire units and 210 firemen were on hand as the old Holy Name School and gym were burned. September 12th.
Five homecoming queen canidates at MMC include, Nichole Simons, Ronita Glassmaker, Shelly Korleski, Christa Schmadeke and Lori Rupp. The king canidates are Marty Alesch, Ryan George, Steve Braun, Rob Yockey and Luke Irwin.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Edna and Verdine Ehrp will be celebrating their 62nd wedding annversary on September 27th.
Fred Nacke, 101, former resident of Remsen and Marcus area, passed away in Navada on August 31 at his residence in the loving and caring home of his son and daughter-in-law Don and Dixie Nacke.
