110 Years Ago – 1912
J.C. Tomey will begin the erection of a new business building on his lot in the burned district next week. The building will be 23×60 and made of cement blocks, one story high.
George Cook, who has conducted a barbershop in this city for the past year, died suddenly in his room at the Dan Melter residence Wednesday.
Mrs. Elizabeth Tschill departed Tuesday evening from Chicago. She expects to remain there permanently.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Weather permitting, the first street concert of the season of the Marcus band will be given next Saturday night. The new leader, Elis Redell, recently came from Oakland, CA, where he was a leader of an orchestra.
Emmert Doherty was home Sunday and Monday from Sioux City where he is working. He has completed his course in the Tri-City Barber School, and is now a full-fledged barber.
C.E. Anderson has opened up a cream station in the Peters Building.
90 Years Ago – 1932
After a month of planning the directors of a proposed playground have secured sufficient financial support to commence work on the first of a series of developments. With the money on hand, the first project to be undertaken will be the building of regulation size field, suitable for football, kittenball and tennis.
85 Years Ago -1937
The snowstorm of last Saturday declared by weather observers as the worst in history at so late a date wrought havoc to telephone and electric lines and halted traffic until Monday in many sections.
Mrs. a. O. Anderson recently purchased the Thompson house, which is at present occupied by Ned Bork and family.
80 Years Ago – 1942
A terrific wind, which at times reached a velocity of forty to fifty miles Monday wrecked power and telephone lines, broke windows, and did not lower in its tempestuous ferocity until late evening.
Howard Johnson left this week for Sioux City, where he has accepted a position as Electric Inspector at the Army Bomber Base.
E.P. Quirin is now nicely settled in his new office quarters in the southwest room upstairs in the bank building.
75 Years Ago -1947
The Marcus community will have one of the largest and most modern farm seed installations in the state upon the completion of the new seed building for Sands Seed Service, which is under construction on the Sand farm bordering Marcus on the northeast. Harold Petersen and his crew have the project well under way.
Mary Ellen Kelly, writer of Kelly’s Korner in the News, has received a handsome certificate from the Des Moines Register commending her recent column telling the story of Good Friday.
Holy Name Church was the scene of a beautiful wedding Wednesday morning of last week when Helen List of Granville became the bride of Lawrence Brady, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Brady.
70 Years Ago – 1952
The Williams sisters, Gladys and Lyda were informed this week that the D.A.R. quilts which they recently quilted were sold and netted the organization $848.
Thirteen neighbors gathered on Thursday at the H.N. Harrison farm and plowed 100 acres of land and finished sowing the oats. Mr. Harrison has recently been a patient in the St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City.
Tyrone Artz celebrated his birthday with party for his schoolmates on Tuesday. The party was held at the school. Games were played and a lunch of dainty cupcakes and ice cream bars were served.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Albert Grauer, Marcus farmer, won the first prize at Saturday night’s big event, receiving $50 in Marcus money. The two $25 prizes did not go out, as neither Mrs. Eric Carlson nor Boyd Kolb of Cleghorn were in a participating business place when the whistle blew.
Bill’s Shoe shop operated by William Sievers, has moved into the business location in the Klingborg building recently vacated by the Hey Leather Store.
SP/3 and Mrs. Larry Springer who were recently married in Japan are children of Mr. & Mrs. Rennes of Staten Island, NY and Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Springer of Cleghorn.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mr. & Mrs. Donald McQueen of Washta announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter. Elaine, to Roger Leavitt, son of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Leavitt of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Larry Holmes entertained at a dinner Sunday in their home honoring their son, Jeff on his first birthday.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Nielsen announce the arrival of their first child, a 4 lb. Son born Saturday at Floyd Valley Hospital. He has been named Wade Allen.
The congregation of Grace Methodist church will hold services in its new church for the first time next Sunday.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Seaman Kenneth Prescott was aboard the Ticonderoga, the carrier that picked up the Apollo 16 after splashdown. His duty was on the crane that picked up the capsule. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Prescott of Marcus.
Mrs. John Leavitt and Mrs. Edgar Roseen announce the completion of a successful cancer crusade in Marcus $547.00 was collected this year approximately $50 more than I 1971.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Holy Name Parish will be observing 100 years with a celebration on Sunday 5. 1977.
Barb Pedersen and Steve Taylor reigned over the junior-senior prom on Friday night. The theme of the event was “It Could Be Magic,” carried out in colors of light blue, dark blue and silver.
40 Years Ago – 1982
The 43 member Marcus concert band received a division I rating at large group contest on Saturday at Primghar.
Ray Gates of Gates Insurance in Marcus has been accepted into membership of the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa.
Mrs. Rose Lage was honored as the oldest active member of the Marcus Federated Garden Club at Guest Day.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Mrs. Bonnie Johnson passed away at a Casper, Wyoming nursing home.
A crowd of over 100 was on hand Sunday afternoon for the crowning of Danielle Henke as Little Miss Cleghorn during the first annual pageant, which was held in the high school gym.
LuAnn Drefke, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Max Drefke was honored on Monday at Bacon Creek Park in Sioux City among the “Best of the class of 1987”
Vernon Meyer, or rural Paullina was the winner of the pickup truck given away by Hesse Chevrolet at their new pickup showing recently.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Jana and Brad Welp, are proud parents of a son Jay Willis. He arrived May 2 and weighed 8 lbs. He is welcomed home by sister Jody Sue.
Dr. Earl and Bea Stine of Altus, OK were Monday and Tuesday visitors in the Stan Nervig home. Dr. Stine was a former doctor of Marcus.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Alica Johnson and Jesse Pick are featured in the MMC Insider “Focus Class of 97” Both plan to further their education.
Mrs. Kay Ogren and her first grade class enjoyed a visit to the Mark and Sara Wilcox family dairy farm. They watched the milking of the cows and feeding the calves.
20 Years Ago – 2002
MMC Middle School students did well at State TSA held in Des Moines on April 11 & 12. Students coming home with trophies are Rachel Mugge, Eric Ogren, Jeremy Letsche, Steven Wetherell and Kyle Johnson.
