110 Years Ago – 1912
Word was received her today f the marriage of Tom Kelly, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Kelly of this city. He is engaged in business in Farley and his bride is a young lady of that place.
The fire department was called Monday to the Troester meat market building where smoke was discovered about four o’clock by O.B. Forbees. A defective flue had been responsible for the blaze starting in the garret over the rooms occupied by the George Stoecker family. There was a brick wind and the fact that there was plenty of water in the tower and quick action by the fire company is all that saved the row of wooden buildings owned by M. Evans.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Amy Johnson of Marcus became the bride of Sidney Meyer of Remsen in an unusual wedding in the big vault in the county clerks office in the courthouse at Cherokee Tuesday morning.
The John Greff forty acres homestead was sold to Henry Falke for $11,094.52.
90 Years Ago – 1932
The football field and tennis court is now assured on the Marcus playground.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kaiser have announce their marriage which took place Monday, April 4. The couple will live on a farm in Marcus township.
Mr. & Mrs. Laverne Gibson are parents of a baby girl born April 15 at LeMars and named Margaret La Vonne.
Delmar Dunn was painfully injured Tuesday evening when he was thrown from a horse.
85 Years Ago -1937
Owing to the paving of Primary No. 5, the road has been rerouted through Marcus with a detour starting at the Alesch corner on No. 5 and extending a mile west and on east to Cleghorn.
Soybeans reached an all time high of $1.80 a bushel on the Chicago market this week.
Lucille Barnes has been appointed a student scholarship adviser for the coming year at Iowa State Teachers College.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Dr. M. F. Joint gave an interesting talk on first aid at the meeting of Marcus Volunteer Fire Department Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Alfred Brandt, who has been ill for three years passed away April 10, leaving her husband and son, Farrel to mourn.
Fern Schroeder became the bride of Emory Brandt in a ceremony at Rolla, MO Saturday, April 4.
75 Years Ago -1947
Charles Woodall, 78, a lifetime resident of this community, passed away Monday morning in Sacred Heart in LeMars after nearly three weeks of illness caused by hear trouble.
E.J. Parks superintendent of the Paullina public schools for the past six years, has bought the W.J. Robinson store at Cleghorn and will take possession June 1.
Judy Reinert, seven year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Reinert, is confined to her home with a serious siege of whooping cough.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Wendell Grauer and Mr. & Mrs. Albert Nielsen were at Sioux Falls Sunday, where they attended a preview of television at station KELO.
Shirley Mae Harms of Archer has accepted the position of instructor in the second grade of the Marcus public school. She will replace Miss Marilyn Nanninga, who has resigned.
Don Gray, Jr. and Larry Strief, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed Strief, Jr. ran together while chasing a fly ball on the playground Saturday afternoon. Don received a gash across his left cheekbone that required five stitches, while Larry had a stiff neck for several days as well as a sizable lump.
Michael, the two year old son of Mr. & Mrs.Howard Flanagan, managed to get hold of a glass of paint thinner and drank enough of it to upset his stomach before deciding that he didn’t like it. His mother rushed him to th edoctor for treatment.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Tuesday evening the officers and building committee of Peace Lutheran church in Marcus decided on final plans for the congregation’s new place of worship. The new church will be built a block south of the present church.
A group of close friends helped Mrs. Walter Clarkson observe her 80th birthday anniversary at the Marcus Nursing Home. Mrs. Michael Clarkson and Mrs. John Brady were hostesses.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Pvt. Charles Sand, son of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand of Marcus, has been assigned to Company E 398th Regiment at Fort Chaffee, AK.
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rupp announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jeanine to Don Schaefer, son of Mr. & Mrs. E. E. Schaefer of Breda, IA.
Friends and neighbors gathered last Thursday at the Joe Kass farm southwest of Marcus to plant his oats and do other farm work. Mr. Kass has been hospitalized with a back injury.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Rosalind Drogmiller, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident March 28, is reported to be greatly improved. She is expected to be released from the hospital in Council Bluffs this weekend.
Floyd Bentz was taken to Floyd Valley hospital Sunday for treatment for facial injuries received when he was bucked off a motorcycle belonging to his son, Paul.
Mrs. Edward Hinspeter, 74, the former Pearl Schwartz, died Saturday morning at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. She taught school in Plymouth and Cherokee counties.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Mayer of Ventura, CA are the parents of a daughter born on April 22.
Brian nelson set a new school record in the two-mile run at the tomahawk Relays at Cherokee on April 18.
Gordon Garvin, 74, of Remsen died April 19 at Floyd Valley hospital in LeMars after a long illness.
Word has been received of the death of Rev. Gene Richter, former pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Farmers State Bank had a tree moving rig come in a remove a large evergreen from the east side of Farmers State Bank. Instead of cutting the tree down they have transplanted the tree in the city park so everyone can enjoy it.
Last week Mr. Bride signed up the students for Fall 1977 classes. Approximately 230 students will be in High School.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Seniors Ken Letsche and Pat Anderson were chosen king and queen at the Marcus Community School prom last Saturday Night.
Wendy Rainboth, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clark Rainboth, was crowned by the 1982 Little Miss Marcus, Wendy received a crown, banner, flowers and a necklace as gifts.
35 Years Ago – 1987
The Ugly Bartender Contest, sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, has awarded Boze Rasmussen the honor of the town’s ugliest bartender.
Ms. Shirley Kunzweiler has been appointed Postmaster of Cleghorn. She succeeds Francis Smith who has retired.
