110 Years Ago – 1912
Clarris Olive Pixler of Cherokee and Carl Lewis Kolb of Marcus were united in marriage Thursday, March 7th in the Pixler home. They will move to the farm Carl owns near Iroquois, SD.
V Sjostrom is building a New Lumber Company of Marcus.
105 Years Ago – 1917
The new Sioux Valley Hospital will be open to the public about Mary 1st, It was built at a cost of $50,000.
95 Years Ago – 1927
The Marcus Hardware and Hatchery, James Rae and Roy DeShaw proprietors, held their annual opening of their annual opening of their hatching department in Marcus Saturday.
The new Ford V eight which has caused so much talk in the auto industry the last few months has been shown in Public.
Ralph “Duke” Slagter who recently joined the navy, was complimented at a farewell party by his former schoolmates Saturday evening.
Six miles of road south of town in Tilden township will be graveled and made into an A grade in spite of the protests of several farmers in that vicinity.
90 Years Ago – 1932
The Edward Meylor farmily moved from a farm in Amherst Township to the Tom Herbert farm, vacated by the Carl Miller family.
New pupils in Marcus Public School include Burnell, Mildred, Ferlinand , Irene and Bernice Reidiman, Robert and Max Brown, Madelins Carlson and Louella Peters.
85 Years Ago -1937
Marcus high school basketball team won the preliminary state tournament in class B last weekend at Cherokee by defeating Greenville, Gaza, Brooke and Calumet.
The Ed Meylor family has moved from the farm in Amherst township to Tom Herbert’s farm in Marcus township vacated by the Carl Millers.
Wesley Carney broke his arm for the second time this month on Sunday just after being able to have the use of it again.
Friends of John Selting will be glad to know that he is making satisfactory gain from a very serious injury received when a horse kicked him.
The sale of draft horses held at the Quirin barn in Marcus last Tuesday brought satisfactory prices, according to Dale Pitts and Roy Barnes, proprietors.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Marcus Golden Eagles have won 16 – 21 games this season and with coach Crowningshield are to be congratulated. Five of the first stringers graduating this year are Knox, Rae, Metcalf, Peterson and Jenkins.
Maxine Kirchoff scored the highest in the spelling bee at Amherst No. 1 school and will represent the school in the Cherokee county spelling bee.
Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Hulser who have operated the Gamble store in Marcus for some time moved to Paullina where they have taken over the Gamble agency.
They Roy Fry family moved the first of the month from Orange City to their farm northwest of Marcus.
75 Years Ago -1947
Lyle McDaniel, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Birch was born Thursday, March 12.
Mrs. Robert Miller, who passed away in her home March 13 was buried Monday afternoon in Marcus-Amherst cemetery. Survivors are her husband and daughters, Margaret and Grace.
Kenneth Roethler received Order No. 1 in the first wartime draft of the present war.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. 7 Mrs. William Berger have moved to the farm south of Marcus vacated by the Mervin Moir family who moved to Akron. William Berger will operate the farm vacated by his father.
Those receiving 100% in spelling in the forth grade last week are Natalie Bork, Billy Castle, Bernita Ebert, Gene Francks, Janice Gates, Joe Means, Dorothy Barlow, Ardys Deichmann, Wesley Steffen and Carol Walker.
W. H. Newstrom and son, Charles, have purchased the Garvin Repair Shop and have taken over the business. The new firm will be known as Marcus Motors.
Bob Ames and family moved from an apartment in the Robert Garvin home to their new basement house located across from the Eric Carlson home in south Marcus.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Otto Frangenberg and family moved Friday from their farm south of town to their newly constructed ranch-style home in southeast Marcus.
A simple but impressive wedding took place Saturday afternoon in South Sioux City, when Miss Donna Hoxsie daughter of Mrs. Clara Hoxsie of Marcus and Alvin Smith son of Mrs. Lloyd Pearson of Marcus repeated their wedding vows.
Mr. & Mrs. John Barry Jr. entertained Mrs. Fred Zangger and Mrs. Andrew Fekete and Linda at dinner Sunday evening in honor of their son Gerald’s fifth birthday anniversary.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mrs. Larry Slagter will meet Betty Lindley of Onowa in the semifinal round of Big Bowl competition over KVTV.
The Rya-Nill Beauty Salon announced an open house of their new business located in the Haahr Building. Partners in the beauty salon are Judy Ryan and Betty Nilles.
Miss Cynthia Rae Harris, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. H. B. Harrris of Sioux Falls and Mark G. Rupp, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rupp were united in marriage February 17 in Sioux Falls.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mr. Harold Brooks and Mr. Harold Hipple have announced that they will sponsor a contest to decide how the wooden bowl in Mr. Hipple’s window was made. Mr. Brooks constructed the bowl from strips of wood from a one foot square by three-quarter inch thick board. A very nice prize will be awarded to the person who guesses the answer.
Mrs. George Hobson, 55, passed away Friday evening as a result of a car accident three miles west of Marcus. She was a wife of a Marcus chiropractor and had lived in this community since 1930.
Twenty Simonsen employees and their wives honored Mr. & Mrs. Johann Miller. Johann retired after working 26 years as a driver salesman for Simonsen Mill Rendering Plant in Quimby.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Gene Cave, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Cave of Marcus, has been elected as an “Outstanding Teenager of America for 1972” according to David Bride, Principal of Marcus Community High School.
Mrs. Dwight Moats and Mrs. Ray Niemann were honored at a surprise birthday part, hosted by Mrs. Catherine Johnson, Lon Brownmiller and Natalie Harman last Friday afternoon at the Catherine Johnson home.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Lauters announce te arrival of a son, Jeffery Allan born March 9.
Mrs. Martha McIntire, 91, who has made her home with Mrs. Bess Nelson the bast 11 years, passed away at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherrokee.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Irene Meyer spent her spring break from Wayne State in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Meyer.
Jim Hoover, Quimby, IL and Mrs. Fred Hoover returned Sunday evening from Billings, MO where they visited in the Michael Hoover home and made the acquaintance of Mrs. Hoover’s new grandson Kristoffer Charles.
Four Marcus junior high students and one sixth grader . All received honors at the Ida Grove Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. All five boys earned a first place medal. The bous were Chuck Bierman, Doug Glackin, Steve Hiller, Greg Johnson and Jim Rassel.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Dale Galles, Northrup King Seed Dealer for Marcus, attended the North Iowa Dealer Advisory Council Meeting in Mason City.
Wilbur Bill Miller, 60, passed away Wednesday in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital following a two-year illness.
Sherri Clausen, daughter of Larry and Judy Clausen, has been accepted at Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City. Sherri is enrolled in the Medical Secretary program.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Funeral services for Louis “Louie” Miller were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Faith Lutheran Church on Monday.
The members of the Marcus School Board have decided to offer Superintendent John Mitts a new contract.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Cave returned home Tuesday after sending a week visiting their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Weihe and Jordon, in California.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Henry Dorr celebrated his 101st birthday last week with a few friends and relatives at his home.
The MMC Jazz Band, under the direction of Jerry Bertrand placed first of 1A schools at the Hoover Jazz Festival in Des Moines Saturday.
Cecil Irwin, a farmer of rural Marcus, is announcing his candidacy for Cherokee County Supervisor of District Two.
Make Hueser represented the Marcus Jaycees at the State Super Shooters competitions on March 7 at Centerville. He placed fourth out of 21 candidates in his age bracket. He received a participation certificate and a nice trophy.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Tonya Schneider and Dunny LoVan have been chosen by their director Nancy Birch to represent the MMC High Steppers at the Iowa Girl’s State Basketball tournament Finals in Des Moines.
Oliver Miller, 78, of Cleghorn passed away in his Cleghorn home Saturday March 8th. Survivors include 3 sons, a brother and a sister. Burial was in Marcus Amherst Cemetery.
Leigha Staab of Marcus and Todd Scheitler of Remsen are planning a June 14th wedding.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Greg and Erin Schroeder of LeMars are the proud parents of the third child, Syndey Marie, born March 4 at Floyd Valley Hospital .She is welcomed home by her brother Colin and sister Olivia
A miscellanieous bridal shower was held for Christa Schmadeke bride to be of Seth Heitter on March 16th at Grace united Methodist Church.
Dorris Norris celebrated her 70th birthday on March 23.
