110 Years Ago – 1912
A very entertaining concert was given by home talent people on Tuesday evening. Harps, violins and bells were played by John Collins, J.F. Kirk, and Bert Titcomb, “Night and Day” with words and music was pleasing number and “Columbia the Gem of the Ocean” with variations is worthy of special mention.
Will Wood left yesterday for Larchwood where he expects to remain for a year at least as he and Miss Lena Zane have taken a contract to conduct the telephone office there for that length of time.
On last evening at eight o’clock at the country home of Mr. & Mrs. John Williams, occurred the marriage of their daughter, Lulu Mae to John Kracke, son J.F. Kracke of Rock township. Mr. & Mrs. Kracke will reside on the William farm.
105 Years Ago – 1917
People were shocked on Saturday by the sad news that Mrs. Robert Peavey had passed away is survived by her husband children, Allard, Araminta and George.
Sjostrom Brothers have purchased a building and $8,000 worth of equipment to go into the creamery business, manufacture ice cream and have cold storage.
The new 60 horsepower Alamo engine for the electric light plant arrived last Saturday.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Fred Ohlendorf died at his home in Remsen Friday at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his wife and seven sons.
Mr. & Mrs. P.P. Holm will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 21, with an open house in the afternoon.
Ruth Geringer and Alfred Bork were married Tuesday afternoon in Cherokee and will make their home in Marcus.
Joe Broblek has rented the large building recently remodeled by the Marcus Lumber company and will move his garage equipment there.
85 Years Ago -1937
Ed Nitzschke is holding his closing out sale Tuesday, February 23, on his farm two miles west and six south of Marcus.
Marcus won their 15th game of the basketball season Tuesday evening when they defeated the Remsen team in an overtime period.
Gleena Mae Green, 7th grader of Marcus public school, has the distinction of being the spelling champion in junior high this year.
The Frank Dunn family are moving this week from the farm to the Elizabeth Ames residence in Marcus.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Esther Nielsen has announced the purchase of the modern Beauty Shop formerly operated by Irma Juhl.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Addy were pleasantly surprised Saturday evening on their 3rd wedding anniversary when guests came in to honor them.
About 106 fathers and sons enjoyed an excellent program and banquet at the Methodist church Wednesday evening at which Oscar Heline acted as chairman.
75 Years Ago -1947
Nels Pallesen has taken over his duties as manager of the Evans Implement Company, which recently became the Massey-Harris dealer for the Marcus Community.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Sand are the parents of a 7 1/2 pound girl born in the John Sand home. This is their first child and she has been named Beverly Jean.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Hagey are parents of a nine pound, four ounce son born on February 9. The new arrival has been named Williams.
Nagel’s Apparel was re-opened following a three-week interruption of business because of the fire which destroyed the Lyric Theatre and the Masonic Hall just south of the Nagle building.
Goodrich and Carris, Cleghorn’s Plymouth and DeSoto dealers, are advertising the first showing of the 1952 DeSoto in their showrooms next Saturday.
Herb Hueser was painfully injured in a farm accident while working with the hitch to his tractor. His right hand was severely cut, requiring sixteen stitches to close the wound.
Mr. & Mrs. Emory Hostetler, new operators of the Malt Shop, are advertising a formal opening to be held next Saturday.
65 Years Ago – 1957
An old Indian relic was found on the Jerry Rae farm. The object apparently was the stone head of some kind of a maul, weighing about five pounds and blunt on each end.
Dr. G.R. Hobson and Dr. D. E. Haines, Marcus chiropractors, have moved into their new quarters. The new building built by Carl Klingborg is on the lot east of the Marland Theatre.
Peter Peterson, 82, of Marcus resident since 1934, passed away Wednesday at the LeMars hospital.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Announcement is made of the engagement and forthcoming marriage of Miss Nancy Goodrich, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Roy Goodrich of Cleghorn and the late Mr. Goodrich to LaVerne William Birch, son of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Birch also of Cleghorn.
N.C. (Chris) Nielsen, 79, a resident of this community for the past 40 years, died February 7 in Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars after several months’ illness.
Mrs. Jim Koch of Marcus has purchased the Corner Café here from Lovell Roberson, and will open for business Monday morning.
55 Years Ago – 1967
The Post Office Department is seeking bids to build and lease the new post office at Marcus, Postmaster General Lawrence F. O’Brien has announce.
The Marcus Fire Department held a special meeting to make plans for a campaign to raise funds for the rescue squad and to equip it properly.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Jim Lens, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Benton, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Martin and Mrs. Vern Brownmiller were callers in the Lawrence French home in Cherokee where they visited with Jim “Mudcat” Grant. Jim is a major league relief pitcher and will be going in spring training with the Cleveland Indians.
A new record has been set for Marcus high school Janet Lynn, a senior, chewed twenty-two pieces of “Double Bubble” bubble gum at one time!
Mrs. Hans Rasmussen sustained a fracture hip in a fall at her home Friday. She underwent surgery at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Paul Kane, 18 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Kane of Independence, Iowa has been named to the list of applicants for the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, by Congressmen Charles Grassley and John Culver.
Darrell Johnson was a district winner in Crow’s 1976 CornMaster Corn Club with a yield of 151.37 bus. No. 2 corn per acre from Crow’s 666 a mid-to-fall season hybrid with a relative maturity rating of 117 days.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Family members gathered at the local Senior Center at noon Sunday for a potluck birthday dinner honoring Mrs. Merle Cave.
Phillip McIntosh, son of Mr. & Mrs. Tom McIntosh, won the first place medal for best design of a racer in the Pinewood Derby held recently.
Rufus B. Goth, father of Willie Goth passed away January 27 after a short illness.
Last Tuesday evening when the Marcus girls defeated the Sutherland team in the second round of the Sectionals Tournament, Coach Jerry Martin notched his 400th win in his coaching career.
The Cleghorn City Council has purchased new playground equipment at a cost of $717 plus freight.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Susan Rosener, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Rosener of Marcus, has been named to the Dean’s Honor Roll at Creighton University for academic work during the fall semester of 1986.
John Johnson and Mrs. Roy Johnson presented a plaque to Marv Simons in memory of Roy Johnson, long time Marcus Fair Board associate and Fair Board Member.
The Marcus Eaglet highlights Senior Spotlights of Jill Roethler, Ed Johnson, Kris Case and Julie Spieler.
The Marcus Community Action Club presented a $500 check to the Cherokee County Work Activity Center.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Stan Nervig and Darrell Downs have been appointed to serve as co-chairman of Heartland Capital Campaign.
Ray Means of Marcus has been named the Outstanding Young Farmer of our community and is one of four finalists for the State of Iowa.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Bob and Irma Garvin celebrated their 55th Wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day.
Lenora Meehan. 85, passed away at Des Moines February 10th. Survivors include 2 sons, 2 daughters and a brother.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Ragbrai is coming to Marcus. It was announced that on July 21 Marcus will host a Ragbrai stop before they spend their evening in Cherokee.
Olson Garage hosted an open house on Friday, February 8 to show off their recent addition to their shop.
