105 Years Ago – 1916
Oscar Erickson returned from Chicago last week, where he has been visiting friends for the last two weeks.
The Helen DuVoyle company is at the Marcus Opera House all this week. Prices are 10, 20 & 30 cents.
Mamie Heath and Clarence Williams of Marcus were united in marriage at high noon Wednesday, December 27, at the home of Dr. & Mrs. Joseph Heath, in Fonda.
Loren Altizer, son of Mr. & Mrs. J.R. Altizer, has enlisted in the army for a four-year term and left Thursday for Denver where he will train for 35 days. He will be sent to Honolulu.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mrs. Ferne Adame sold Saturday the Patricia Beauty Shoppe and furnishings to Emily Keegan of LeMars and immediate possession was given.
Roy Weimer has purchased a home in Brookings, SD and moved his wife and daughter and their household goods to that place this week where he will operate a hatchery.
Albert Dorr and Marvin Schultz are home for the holidays from Seward, NE, where they are studying in college to be teachers.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Theodore Treinen motored to Iowa City Saturday and Misses Dorothy Treinen, Leona Bindner and Dale Barnes accompanied him for home to spend the holidays in their homes.
The funeral for Fred Ehlers held here on Monday afternoon in the Christian church, was very largely attended. Rev. Roll officiated. Burial took place in Oak Hill cemetery in Cherokee.
Miss Helen Dunn has returned from Marshall, Minnesota where she spent three weeks in the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. & Mrs. Thos Breyfogle.
85 Years Ago -1936
The Marcus basketball team built up a substantial lead in the first half of the game with Paullina last Friday night on the local floor. The Golden Eagles stepped out to a 21 to 8 lead before the half ended . The game ended with Marcus high on top with a score of 35 to 25.
Mary Kelly, student nurse at St. Joseph’s hospital in Mason City, and Joe Kelly of Waverly, IA will spend Christmas here in the home of their parents Mr. & Mrs. John Kelly.
Coming from the western plains, a cold wave Wednesday swept before it spring-like showers and balmy temperatures, bringing on its heels about four inches of snow.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Tutt will spend Christmas in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Cornelius Ludwig at Remsen.
Clarence Benedict, , 62, funeral was held on Saturday, December 20 at the Christian Church. He was buried in the Amherst Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Myrtle, and two children Mary Helen and Frances Lou.
Frank Norris came Saturday to spend his vacation in the home of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris
75 Years Ago -1946
Percy Means and Clifford Carlson returned home Saturday afternoon from the Sioux Valley Hospital at Cherokee, where they had been since an auto accident in which they were involved on Monday morning, December 16. Means is recovering very rapidly, however he has a cast on his ankle, which is broken, and Carlson must wear a cast form his waist up to his neck for the next two months.
A birthday party was given Saturday afternoon for Johnny Thompson on his fourth birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Nick Miletich of Emmetsburg are spending the Christmas holidays in the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Herman Petrich.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Meylor of Cherokee announce the birth of a daughter on Tuesday, December 18 in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. The little miss weighed in at eight pounds, eight ounces and has been named Mary Ann and is welcomed home by one sister.
Jimmy Olson had the cast removed from his neck last week and is now wearing a brace. Jim received a broken neck in an automobile accident several months ago but is reported to be coming along fine.
Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Richardson are leaving Friday for Orlando, FL where they will be spending the winter months.
Lester Hueser, student at Wayne, NE visited in Marcus Wednesday with his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Pitts, and with other relatives and friends.
65 Years Ago – 1956
An ice skating rink is under construction on the Farmers Coop Elevator lot near the steel storage building. The rink will be ready as soon as the weather permits good ice.
Arriving home Saturday evening to spend the holidays with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Verner Johnson, was Verdell Johnson a junior at South Dakota State.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Barry and Debbie of Omaha arrived Friday to spend the weekend in the homes of Mr. & Mrs. John Barry, Sr. and Mr. & Mrs. Francis Wilberding.
60 Years Ago – 1961
During the past week, Peace Lutheran church of Marcus installed stained Glass Windows in the church sanctuary.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Grauer will observe their silver wedding anniversary Sunday, December 31. Open house will be held at the Lewis Hotel in Cherokee.
It appears as thought an era will come to an end this week, when Fred Mossman closes his cream station. With many faithful patrons, and for the seven years he operated the station he brought $10,000 dollars worth of cream yearly.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Walter Clarkson, 83, a long time Marcus Resident, passed away the Friday before Christmas. He is survived by his wife and 4 children.
Josephine Hydman and Donna Douvia, students at St. Joseph’s School of nursing, are spending the holidays in their parental homes.
“The King and I” is showing in the Lynic Theater starring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner, December 30 and 31.
50 Years Ago – 1971
It’s Legal! Alabama was the first U.S. state to make Christmas a legal holiday in 1836.
Mr. & Mrs. Earnest Wilcox, mark, Roger & Billy and Mr. & Mrs. George Gottsche, Sr., were guests in the Les Wilcox home Thursday night to celebrate the birthday of George Gottsche. Mrs. Les Wilcox baked a special cake for the occasion.
Bob Goodburn, Don Haahr, Bill Johnson & Gary Rupp are the senior boys attending the Rotary Club meeting this month.
Mrs. Duane Case, on behalf of the Women’s society of Christian Services, presented a Christmas gift to Mrs. Lon Brownmiller in appreciation of her services as nursery attendant during meetings throughout the year.
45 Years Ago – 1976

40 Years Ago – 1981
Stanley Smith of Marcus, is celebrating his 90th birthday on Saturday, December 27 with friends and family.
“Tut” Teninger was honored at an open house for his retirement after 30 years of service with the postal department at the Marcus Community Center on December 27.
Ed Sand, Jeff Schmillen, Larry Wurth and Michael nelson were selected for inclusion in the 1986 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America.
35 Years Ago – 1986

Mr. & Mrs. Scott Henke & Carissa of Bloomington, MN were weekend visitors in the Ray Henke & Willie Goth homes.
Todd Michael Brown, son of Charles & Nancy Brown of Cleghorn, was featured in the MMC News. Todd’s advice to those left behind is “don’t be afraid to chase a dream.”

25 Years Ago – 1996
Jade Irwin, a 6’ 165 lb. Eagle split end, has been selected to membership on the 1996 All Northwest District football team.
Mr. & Mrs. Bryan Dreckman of Virginia Beach, VA recently spent several days in the parental Jim & Eleanor Dreckman home and visited with other local relatives.
K-C members, Paul Wilberding & Mick Theisen are pictured presenting a check in the amount of $4,050.00 to Don Agostine, director of the Cherokee County Work Activity Center. The check will be used to help pay for needed renovations and improvements to the interior of the Center.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Hometown Christmas was held with a large crowd attending. The weather cooperated this year, unlike last year when many of the festivals were cancelled due to severe weather. Horse-drawn rides for all were provided by John Wibe and Dean and Bonita Davison. Marshmallow roast was held by the Marcus Boyscouts, Jeff’s Food held a chili feed during the evening while other local merchants had special sales during the celebration.
New Chamber Crew fir 2002. Richard Radtke of the Marcus News will replace Laura Letsche as president. Nancy Nielsen will be vice-president, Kyle Pingrey, treasurer and Pat Reuter, secretary.
