105 Years Ago – 1916
Funeral services for Charles I. Bass, 61, were held on December 2 at the Methodist Church at then o’clock last Saturday. Charles moved to Marcus in 1855 and married Miss E. Bartlett. To the union were born three children, Charles, Harriett and William.
A Home talent play will be given for the benefit of the Marcus Library on Thursday evening December 14, at the Marcus opera house. A comedy-drama in four acts, entitled. “The Merry Cobbler,” will be put on. Price to see the show will be 1st floor 35¢ and Gallery 25¢. Curtain rises at 8:15.
The seventieth anniversary of the admission of Iowa into the Union occurs on December 28th. It was just as the close of the year 1846 that President Polk signed the act of Congress which made Iowa a State “on equal footing with the original States in all respects whatsoever.”
95 Years Ago – 1926
Frank Garvin and Miss Loretta Garvin departed Tuesday afternoon for California where they will spend the winter. They will make their home in Pasadena.
Maude Fitzpatrick of Kingsley and Martin LeMoine of Grand Meadow were married November 27 at Dakota City.
Fourth graders at Marcus Public who received 100% in Spelling are Arlene Blietz, Darlene Dixson, Audrey Hoxie and Lavonne Garlow.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the eight room house of John Gibson, Saturday night. The blaze was discovered by neighbors at nine o’clock after the fire had gained considerable headway.
Telephone service has been extended to the farms of A.I. Birch, Carl Johnson, Chris Johnson and Fred Ritter, south of Marcus recently.
85 Years Ago -1936
Miss Lucille Cave spent the weekend with her cousin, Norma Jean Briggs.
Ament Chevrolet is advertising the new model for 1937. Its new high compression valve in head engine give you new power – new smoothness – new acceleration – and is even more economical than in the past.
Martin Miller has opened a new radio shop in the back of Louis Collins store. Mr. Miller is a graduate of the National Radio Institute and is thoroughly experienced in his work.
80 Years Ago – 1941
The U.S. of America is at War. Hostilities have been commented in the Pacific Ocean and this fact dwarfs all that has previously happened. Our sovereignty has been challenged and our national integrity violated by armed assault upon our ships and harbors at the command of aggressors.
Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Springer are the parents of a daughter born to them December 2. She has been named Karon Kay.
Mr. & Mrs. Earnest Kauffman were pleasantly surprised Sunday evening when a large group of friends gathered to help them celebrate their 20th Wedding Anniversary.
75 Years Ago -1946
An outstanding corn yield of 132.74 bushels of corn per acre has won the 1946 Cherokee county champion for George Misenhelder of Marcus, according to official word received today from headquarters of the 1946 national DeKalb corn growing contest. Over four thousand farmers from twenty-two states and Canada entered the contest this year.
Ernest Erickson will hold a closing-out farm sale at his place two miles east and three miles south of Marcus on December 19. Mr. Erickson will sell 24 head of cattle, two horses, a complete line of machinery, two automobiles, chickens, feed etc.
Friends and relatives gathered in the Municipal hall Saturday evening to honor Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Chuck Beaton has accepted a position as bookkeeper at the Marcus Oil & Supply Company. He starts his duties on Monday.
The board of supervisors of Cherokee County will have a public auction of a Marcus residence on Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. It is a 5 room house with basement and is hooked up to city water. The five room house with lots 4, 5, 6, and 7, in block 6 Quinn’s addition to the town of Marcus, Generally called Sunset hill and known as the Phil King place.
Ronald and Tim Galles spent Tuesday with their grandmother, Mrs. Francis Coburn.
Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Coleman are the proud parents of a son born Saturday in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Howard Peavy and Wilfred Husman of Marcus and Wilfred’s brother, Calvin of Quimby were among the lucky hunters who got their deer last week.
Joseph Treinen, 87, a resident of Remsen for the last 70 years, died Sunday at University hospital in Iowa City, after a long illness.
T/Sgt. & Mrs. Lyle Weicht of Enid, OK, are the proud parents of a 7 lb. 2 oz, daughter born on Sunday, December 9.
Mr. & Mrs. Earnest Kauffman were presently surprised Sunday on their 35th wedding anniversary when a group of friends and relatives came to their home to help them celebrate the occasion.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mrs. Larry Slagter bowled 788 last Sunday and bested 32 other women bowlers in qualifying for the Big Bowl show which appears at 12 noon each Sunday on Channel 9.
Aurthur Harvey, 68, a life-long resident of the Marcus community past away December 11. Mr. Harvey operated a service station one mile south of Marcus from 1941 to 1960, when his health forced retirement.

55 Years Ago – 1966
Carol Miller, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Miller, was recently selected as principal flutist of the Drake University Concert Band at Des Moines, Miss Miller is a senior at Drake, majoring in Music.
Jim Brownmiller, son of Mr. & Mrs. Cy Brownmiller, was trampled by a steer Sunday while loading cattle. He underwent surgery on his leg Tuesday morning at St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City.
Bettye Pallesen, Sue Dorr, Mary Jane Haines and Verla Stowater visited with George Boots in Sioux City Monday morning.
50 Years Ago – 1971
The Marcus Eagles made Sergeant Bluff-Luton their first victims of the season Friday night by a score of 63-49. Gene Cave led the team in rebounding and scoring with a total of 12 rebounds and 15 points.
The Marcus wrestling team hosted Kingsley-Pierson to an exciting 28-28 tie Saturday, December 4th. The Junior Varsity started off the meet with a 33 to 14 victory.
Miss Sheila Rae Peterson became the bride of Frank Gary Booth at a seven o’clock evening ceremony at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus on Saturday, October 30.
Mrs. Willie Goth and children were brunch guests Sunday morning in the home of Betty Horstman.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Jay Reuter, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Reuter of Remsen, has been accepted for enrollment in the Carpentry Program at Northwest Iowa Technical College, Sheldon, Iowa.
Barb Fry, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Fry and Jean Grage, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Arlie Grage, both of Marcus, were capped recently in the traditional capping ceremonies at the University of South Dakota School of Nursing, Vermillion.
Mr. & Mrs. Ab Smith attended the Christmas concert of the Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Sunday evening. Their daughter, Denise, had a solo part in the concert.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Ronald Collins, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Don Collins of Marcus, has been accepted as a freshman student at Palmer College of Chiropractic.
Roger Leavitt suffered a painful dislocated shoulder and bruises elsewhere when he slipped and fell, making a brief but bone-jarring contact with the cement. At the time of the fall there was a layer of 2 inches of ice.
Mr. & Mrs. Brian Hogue announced the birth of a daughter, Angela Robin., weighing 7 lbs. and 1 oz. on December 4. She is welcomed home by two sisters, Brenda & Debbie.
35 Years Ago – 1986

Two Marcus grads lead the state volleyball serving percentage The state leader in 1977 was Sandy Goth with 99% serving and an MHS student led also in 1978 Sue Ogren served 100% in 1978.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Mayor Stowater is shown in a picture throwing the switch, thereby proclaiming the Christmas season is officially here.

Visited Mr. & Mrs. Cletus Henke on Monday.
The MMC girls basketball team lost a heartbreaker to LeMars Gehlen Catholic, 38-43. The Eagles were led by senior Deanne Henke who contributed 17 points.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Matt Hueser is shown in a picture with a very nice deer he bagged on opening day of hunting season, with an assist from Roger Ruden. The buck had a rack of 15 points.
On December 7th the Eagle matmen traveled to Alton for the MOC-Floyd Valley Tournament. We had two gold medals for the Eagles, Greg Miller at 103 lbs. And Andy Busch at heavyweight.
A Come & Go Baby Shower for Eric Carlson, son of Kim & Cathy Carlson was held Saturday, December 14 at the Peace Lutheran Church.
5 Years Ago – 2001
Chandler Alesch of Marcus was the lucky winner of the shiny new bike from Farmers State Bank.
Dennis and Lauralee Wurth of Rochester, MN are the proud parents of a daughter, Melanie Noelle on October 18, 2001. Grandparents are Milton and Barb Wurth of Marcus.
Max and Lorene Mugge celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and relatives at the Golden Pheasant of Remsen.
