Personal Mention
By Elaine Rassel
Another hot week! There have been overnight bits of rain that were welcome. After midnight, going into Friday, lightning and thunder were present.
Monday morning, Steve and I went to the burial of his father at the Remsen Catholic Cemetery.
Wednesday evening Bethany and I went to Le Mars. I needed some pictures developed and found out that Wal-Mart did start developing pictures not long ago. During the pandemic, they were not developing pictures. My camera has more than enough pictures but with no place to develop them, the number did rise. Now, I have to go through and delete those that weren’t necessary. When Monica Mayer worked there, she would make file cards from a CD of pictures. When there is no file card, a person has to put on the CD and go through to see what I was looking for. I’m going to check and see if someone in that department knows or wants to make file cards.
While there, we looked for a shower gift for Shania Rassel. She did have some places where she had registered. Bethany’s phone had no reception in the store so we couldn’t see what Shania had signed up for her bridal shower. Afterwards, I found out that she hadn’t registered at this store!
The next night, with only one half hour left before the store closed, we did go and find something to give. My kids say they don’t like me to go to a store and look for a “card” as it takes me forever to find one. I admit I look at many to see just which one is the right one for the occasion. This is probably why they only gave me a few minutes o find a shower gift. I never give something unless it is what I have or what I would like to have.
When we were renting before our house came, I had purchased “cutting boards” and put them on the counter to protect the counter from having “cut” marks or maybe even a burn mark from a hot pan. I have them on my counter tops and wouldn’t be without them! These cooking programs on television are always telling about a meat thermometer that can be left in the meat. I don’t have one but made sure Shania got one! Her bridal shower was at Sanborn Saturday morning. She received many nice and useful gifts.
Well, this is the week we have been waiting for! On Wednesday evening, the King and Queen will be chosen for the Marcus SQC. The beards will be judged. I understand the Charades and other bands will be there to entertain us.
The rest of the week is basically about the Marcus Fair. The horses from Colorado will be doing two presentations. Otherwise most of the other events are similar to other years of the Fair. There is a parade on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The route is supposedly starting on Railroad Street, going south past Marcus Lumber to the corner of the Post office. Goes west to the next corner and goes south past Fire station and then east. It is NOT going down Main Street because those two blocks will be blocked off for street dances that evening.
I checked with Stephanie S. about getting a SQC book hoping it wasn’t too late. Check with Julie Sand as she has some that can be purchased. I did pick mine up and there really aren’t that many left to sell.
Have you ever been at a funeral where someone has a long eulogy and just goes on and on with mainly something that could have been said in a few short sentences? This is what I went through at a church funeral. It was really not much about the deceased but rather about the person doing the eulogy. The minister couldn’t do anything about the length of the eulogy but maybe in the future, a time limit could be set. More than one person was looking at their watch, hoping the eulogy person would see that and know it was time to quit!
When Marcus had presentation of cemetery walks, people brought in memorabilia about the person they were talking about after we had gone through the cemeteries. It got so that the last ones I was at, each speaker was given an amount of minutes. All this came about because of one speaker that, wherever he spoke, went on and on and could have said it in a few sentences. He wasn’t happy (at another presentation) when he was told about the few minutes he was going to have!
Our condolences to the families of Kate Ogren. When I saw her obituary in the S. City Journal, this is how I want to remember her as. She will be missed by all those whose lives she has touched. May her memories be of comfort to her family. May she rest in peace until we meet again.
This week is going to be a very busy week! Hope to see you at the Fair sometime or another.
A little trivia bit Thomas Jefferson has been credited with introducing the following foods to America: rice, spaghetti, French fries, and ice cream. A lavish entertainer, when he died, Jefferson was $40,000 in debt!
Keep in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost loved ones to death, those who are struggling with their illnesses; those trying to find a way to pay the rent due to the landlord, those getting back to work, and to those who are trying to find a way to build a bridge rather than a barricade to bring families back together.
I will leave you with this quote from Walter Scott (1771-1832), Scottish novelist: “O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive
