125 Years Ago – 1896
The weather all last week was from 92-102 in the shade. Many suffered from sun strokes, men and horses alike.
The harvest of small grain is completed. It is of inferior and very light quality.
The little child of Nick Bourke died last Saturday and was interred in the Marcus cemetery Sunday.
James Dempsey of the Central House is a happy man as they have a fine baby boy born Monday evening.
115 Years Ago – 1906
John C. Bass of Marcus and a student at Morning Side College has been elected editor and chief of the Collegiate Reporter, the official newspaper of the college. John is very active in college athletics.
Mrs. John Bird and daughter, Connie, returned from their Canadian trip. Mrs. Bird’s health seems to have benefitted from the change of climate.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Perry King has rented a farm south of Marcus for the next year. His wife, nee Alice Gowan, will be closer to her family at Cleghorn, as opposed to living at Gaza.
Otto Kolb, secretary of Western Cherokee Mutual Farmers Insurance, reports losses from lightning to cattle, hay stacks. horses and buildings.
Joe Lennon and Matt Schmillen of Westgate, IA drove overland 277 miles to visit relatives and perhaps, buy farm land and move here.
95 Years Ago – 1926
A twister did damage on the N.W. Wilson farm and the Chris Hohbach farm, both southeast of Marcus. They are about a mile apart. Buildings, orchards and crops were damaged.
Elmer F.Cuthrell and Helen Elvera Nelson, both of Marcus, got a license to wed Wednesday.
Lucille Herbert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Herbert of Marcus and Emmett Fenton, son of the late Tom Fenton of Marcus, will be wed Tuesday, August 17 in Marcus Holy Name Church. They will make their home in Glendale, CA where he is employed.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Miss Lillian Birch of Tilden Twp. has accepted a position with the Walsh Commission Firm in Sioux City.
Jay Peters and son, David, accompanied Jay’s cousin, Miss Rose Glass, to Seattle, WA. They made the trip in a new Ford which Rose purchased from Peters Bros. Jay and David will return by train.
85 Years Ago -1936
There is no relief from the drouth here, the water supply on farms is acute. The rain clouds yield a few drops. The early corn is beyond help.
Burton Dull, well known son of Mr.and Mrs. Emery Dull of Cherokee, and C. Hoorneman of LeMars have opened a law practice in LeMars.
Mr. ans Mrs. Harold Skaags of Cleghorn are the parents of a 9 1/2 pound son, born August 3.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Gethsemane Danish Church has been moved into Oyens and services have been held there the last two Sundays. Rev. Fred Jacobsen, pastor of Marcus Nazareth Lutheran, is also the pastor at Oyens.
Glen Morrow of Meriden, truck gardener, estimates that he will harvest 2.000 bushels of tomatoes from his six acres of vines.
John Wayne and Thomas Mitchell star in “Long Voyage Home” showing in the Lyric Friday and Saturday.
75 Years Ago -1946
The Marcus Livestock and Industrial Show will be held Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 and 29, with a Centennial Pageant held Thursday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Krekow of Tilden Township are rejoicing over the arrival of a daughter, born August 9th.
Mr. and Mtrs. William Cronin are the parents of an 8 lb. 7 oz, daughter born July 31 and named Patricia.
Mr. and Mrs. Harley Neir are the parents of a 9 lb. 4 oz. daughter born Thursday, August 9 and named Suzzane Maria.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The three day Marcus Industrial and Livestock Show will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, September 5, 6 and 7. “Doc” Lawson will provide music on his Hammond Organ.
Two Marcus sailors, Wayne Simons and Bob Reed, met in Sasebro, Japan recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Weber are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 15 oz. daughter, born Monday, August 13 and named Judy Ann. She is their first child.

65 Years Ago -1956
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Bierman and family returned from a vacation to the Black Hills and Yellowstone. They stopped at Cheyenne, WY and saw the rodeo and other points of interest.
Beverly Simons, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Simons, was crowned Queen of the 50th annual Cherokee County Plowing Match. She received a weeks vacation at Lake Killarney, Ironton, MO.
Charlotte Rae and Marvel Krekow departed for Torrance, CA where they will teach in the schools there.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs. Junior Barwick and family and Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Waller and family enjoyed a week at Lake Okoboji.
Kent Schmillen, nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Schmillen, will be in traction in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Sioux City for 4 to 5 weeks, due to a fractured leg.
The Iowa State Fair will be held August 25-September 3 in Des Moines with fun for all.
Mr. and Mrs. Hillis Carris of Cleghorn and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burch of Marcus were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary, with a dinner in the Debonair at LeMars, Saturday evening, August 12.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Julie Irwin has enrolled at N.B.T. in Sioux City and will begin classes September 6. She will be taking a secretarial course.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ott of Cleghorn hosted a welcome home picnic for Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gianopolous and Mark of Norfolk, VA. Mike just finished a 4 year stint in the U. S. Navy.
Mrs. John Botkin, nee Halcyon Heline, was a guest of her schoolmate, Mrs. Nick Militisch, Saturday evening in Cleghorn, in the H.H. Petrich home.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Gary and Jay Reuter returned home after spending several days in the Kenneth McQueen home at Fort Dodge.
The Meriden-Cleghorn communities welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Steven Tangerman and family as he will be the new coach at M-C.
Marcus Lockers offers home cured bacon @ 79¢ a pound and ground beef patties @ 69¢ a pound.
There will be a Demolition Derby held Wednesday, August 15 at 8:00 p.m. at the Marcus Fairgrounds.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bindner are the parents of an 8 lb. 9 oz. daughter, born July 25. She is named Diane Kay and has 2 brothers at home.
Linda Nelson of Pewaukee, WI spent a week in the parental Roy Nelson home and attended the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Nelson.
Mrs. Ione McConnell returned to her Phoenix, AZ home after spending three weeks visiting relatives and friends in Marcus.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Margaret Meehan and Rose Galles were weekend guest of their sister, Erma Snyder, in Sheldon. They visited their brother, W.B. Snyder of Maywood, CA and their nephew, Steve Snyder, of San Francisco.
Dave Hughes, Brian Specht and Eric Johnson, of Meriden-Cleghorn were selected as first team players on the Little Sioux Conference baseball team. Mary Rose, of M-C was the lone pick on the girls’ softball first pick team.
Donna Kosse of Marcus received an Associate Degree in Nursing and Mark Housken, also, of Marcus received one in Carpentry from Iowa Lakes Community College.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Jim and Jean Scharff and Jennifer of Laurens and Mrs. Opal Reed of Cherokee were Sunday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Scharff in Cleghorn to celebrate Jim’s birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Kirchoff of Marcus and Gerald Gilbert of Meriden returned home after spending a few days near Wellsville. Mo visiting relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Carver of Storm Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Powell, Bret and Brad, of LeMars and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Joines of Sioux City were Saturday dinner guests in the Mrs. Laurence Bass home.
30 Years Ago – 1991
A tornado played touch-tag with a number of farmsteads and Trinity Lutheran Church south of Marcus Wednesday evening, August 15.
The Marcus Community Class of 1971 held its 20th class reunion at the Cleghorn Shelter House. Supper was catered by the Pizza Ranch.
David and Shelley Nethers of Virginia spent 10 days visiting her parents, Lester and Karen Donaldson and her Grandmother Rita Donaldson, all of Cleghorn and her sister, Cindy Donaldson, of Cedar Falls.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Galen Rupp, Clark Rainboth, Ed Schlenger, Jim Kunkel and Mike Knutson, are pictured on the 5 man bicycle that they toured northwest Iowa with RAGBRAI, promoting the Marcus QQC celebration.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Celeste Ogren of Marcus was crowned Iowa State Fair Queen for 2001.
Bill and Stephanie Sand and Jeffery welcomed a 7 pound 6 ounce daughter/sister , born Wednesday, August 1st.
