125 Years Ago – 1896
The thermometer registered 96 degrees in the shade last Monday and the night was suffocating. It was ideal corn weather and some farmers said the corn grew 6 inches that day. Tuesday was a repetition of Monday.
The city scales will be sold on August 10th and it will be advertized in the Marcus News.
Due to hail and other weather conditions, there are some fields of wheat, corn and oats, that will not pay to be harvested.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Some fine new steps were put in at the local Methodist Church with Joe Heath as the contractor.
Mrs. Maggie Melrose, a Missionary from China, is visiting in the parental Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rae home here. Her two sons are also here.
105 Years Ago – 1916
The Illinois Central painting crew painted the Cleghorn depot inside and outside.
The 15 month old child of the Otto Jorgensens of Cleghorn survived swallowing the stopper from a daisy fly killer.
Peters Bros. have sold Ford Touring cars this past week to Phil Schmitt, G.W.Evans, L.A. Rowlet and Walter Bjork.
95 Years Ago – 1926
S.W. Powell, who turned 83 on July 4th, passed way in his Meriden home August 1st. He was their last Civil War Veteran and had survived several months in Andersonville Prison. He was sent home to die but recuperated and lived 50 years in Cherokee County.
Vera Barnes is recuperating from a fall from a mule. She is badly bruised, has facial injuries and is unconscious.
Mrs. Francis Swindle surprised her husband with a party on his birthday Tuesday evening. Games and lunch were enjoyed by 25 guests.
Agnes Marie Hoxsie, her father and grand parents and Charlotte Gingerich, departed for a 3 week vacation in New Orleans, to visit the childhood home of Agnes’ mother, who died when Agnes was born.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cuthrell of Grand Meadow are the parents of a baby girl.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carley and daughter, Lorraine, departed on a motor trip to northern Canada.
Junior Erickson returned to his Marcus home after spending a month with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Savereid, at Boone.
85 Years Ago -1936
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Richards and family departed for Texas Monday morning where they intend to locate permanently in or near Fort Worth. Sam intends to remain in the shoe repair business.
Bernard Seegar is hauling mail this week in place of Lowell Goodrich who is on vacation.
The West Amherst threshers enjoyed a picnic in the Irvin Mayer home. Ice cream and cake were served.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Gus Rud, manager of the Rock Island Co in Cleghorn, is having a new home built in the south part of town with H.H. Perich as the carpenter.
Alyce Anderson, Dorothy Mae Dorr, Lillian Foley and Mary Georges returned home after a vacation in the Black Hills.
Marcus Gamble Store advertises a Coronado cast coal and wood range for $54.95.
75 Years Ago -1946
Five Marcus youths volunteered for service and will go to Fort Snelling, MN for their physicals. James Muehl, Derald Hendrickson, Roger Rae, Gerald Pallesen and Dale Young will leave for their training centers if they pass their physicals.
Dick Ament, who was recently discharged from the service, is employed by the Extension Service to help with 4-H Club work in Cherokee County.
Mr. and Mrs, Dick Petersen are the parents of a 7 pound 4 ounce daughter, born Monday, August 5 and named Carol Joyce.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mr. and Mrs. L.J. McGivern returned home from a two week vacation in Canada where they visited Riding Mountain National Park and Winnipeg. They report a most enjoyable trip.
Mrs. Duane Faul and David returned to their McMinnville, OR home after spending 2 months in the parental Ralph McConnell home.
Cletus Henke of Cherokee and Phyllis Garvin of Marcus attended the International Brotherhood of Magicians Mid-Summer Picnic in the Jackson Hotel ballroom in Sioux city Sunday, August 5th. Cletus learned many new tricks for his magic shows.
65 Years Ago -1956
Construction has started on a new home and office combined for Dr. and Mrs. G.W. Wiedemeier, just south of their present home. A two car garage will also be incorporated into the structure.
Former Marcus resident, Francis Lewis Walsh, 30, now of Alta was killed instantly in a car-truck crash near Lawton. He is survived by his wife, 3 children, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.Services were held in Alta.
Petitions are being circulated for a swimming pool in Marcus.
Mary Ellen Reynolds won the essay contest on the Park Improvement in Marcus. She just graduated from Marcus Holy Name.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Showing in the Marland Friday and Saturday, “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” starrng Jayne Mansfield and Kenneth More. “Midnight Lace” with Doris Day and Rex Harrison will run Sunday and Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Wallin and family, Steven Hagey and Ronnie Snyder departed for a weeks fishing in Minnesota.
Marian Ricker will edit Seconds Sanctified, a publication for over 2000 shut-ins all over the world. It was started by the late Mary Ellen Kelly. Marian will work from her parents’ farm home south of Marcus.
55 Years Ago – 1966
A reception will be held for the Jon Mitts family Sunday afternoon in the elementary school building, hosted by the board of directors and the Marcus Rotary Club. Jon is the new superintendent of the Marcus Community Schools. He and his wife, Doris, are the parents of 3 sons.
Mr. and Mrs. Simon Shrank of Danbury were Monday dinner guests in the home of their daughter, Mr.and Mrs. Emmett Wolf and family at Cleghorn.
Mrs. Barton Sangwin of Meriden and Mrs. John Coburn of Marcus spent several days in the Max Seely cottages on East Okoboji to observe their birthdays. Their husbands joined them on the weekend.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Larry Keffeler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Keffeler, has completed his four years of service in the U.S. Navy and will continue his Pharmacy Course at Creighton University in Omaha in September.
Marian Ott of Washington, DC arrived Saturday to spend a week with her mother, Mrs. Carl Ott of Cleghorn.
Joyce Alesch of San Francisco, CA arrived home to attend her sister’s wedding and visit her parents, Mr.and Mrs. Leo Alesch.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Denise Smith, daugher of Mr.and Mrs. Abe Smith of Marcus, has advanced to the finals of the Al Perry show at Crofton, NE.
Earnest Wilcox, 58, of Cleghorn died unexpectedly while vacationing in Leucadia, CA, July 28. Funeral services were held in the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church with burial in Marcus- Amherst Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, 3 sons, a sister and a brother.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wankum returned home from a vacation in Missouri. They attended a family reunion in St. Thomas and visited relatives in Jefferson City.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Brian Mugge of Cleghorn and Carol Heldt of Mallard are planning a September 12 wedding. He is a carpenter at Vail, CO and she is an RN.
The 45th annual Marcus Fair will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 10, 11 and 12. Koreen Anderson will present “ Christmas in August” as the theme of the Cooking School.
Mr. and Mrs. Brad Coburn are the parents of a 6 lb. 14 oz. son, born August 1 and named Heath Bradley. He has 3 sisters.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Don and Connie Harman of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb 5 1/2 oz daughter, born July 28, named Amber Patricia.
Don and Vera Wiese, Leo and Marie French and Stanley and Margaret Birch, of Cleghorn attended the Danish Friends Picnic in the Buena Vista County Park near Peterson Sunday.
Andy Rutter and Gentry Berger of Marcus and Jon Fuhrman of Cleghorn attended the Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute at Iowa State University in Ames July 21-24. The theme of the conference was “Take Stock in Iowa Agriculture”.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Jack and Addie Meyers of St. Paul, MN were Saturday afternoon and supper guests in the Duane and Jo Nafziger home in Cleghorn. Jack and Duane were Army buddies.
Mrs. Laurence Bass visited Mrs. Craig Hamlin and baby son, Travor Charles, in Orange City Hospital. Travor was born July 31. Mrs. Hamlin will be remembered as Kay Carney of Marcus.
Mabel Quall, 82, nee Mabel Dixson, died Tuesday, July 30 of injuries suffered in an auto accident. She is survived by her husband, 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Services and burial were in Sioux City.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Nick and Mary Rose of Cleghorn are the parents of a 7lb. 7 1/2 oz. son born Monday, July 22 and named Jesse John.
Philomena Schwarz will be honored on her 88th birthday with an open house Sunday, August 4th.
