125 Years Ago – 1896
The work on the Central water tank is making progress and it will have a capacity of 2,000 barrels.
Marcus challenges any town in the State of Iowa to show better sidewalks than we have.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Allie Williams, Nona Edgerton, Nellie Hoselton and Maud Bush received diplomas at Marcus High School. Their motto is: “Rowing, not drifting”. ( This does not agree with the QQC History).
The postmaster at Marcus will receive $1400 a year starting July 1st, 1901.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Six boys and five girls will receive diplomas at Marcus High School Saturday evening, June 3. Their motto is: ”From school life to life’s school!”
Mrs. E. Pierce sold her 160 acre farm south of Marcus to Mr. Pendleton from north of Meriden.
Mrs. Lizzie Masters of Chicago and Dell Masters are visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ed Keleher and family for two months.
The Delaney Estate lists specials on new Spring coats from $5 to $12, the latest styles in serge and corduroy.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mark Meehan who has spent 4 months in Phoenix, AZ for health reasons returned home Friday.
Mildred L. Johnson, Lois D. Ritchie and Vera J. Herbert, all of Marcus, will graduate from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls this month.
Mich and Kass advertise their Lodinlick Underwear union suits, step-ins and bloomers at special prices.
Emmett Dougherty is a hard working man. He works days with the gravel company and nights at the telephone office.
90 Years Ago – 1931
The Marcus Oil Company completed 2 tourist cabins at the Lone Eagle Park, one mile south of Marcus. They are 8X10 in size.
Cleghorn High School has 11 graduates this year. Services were Thursday, May 21.
Cherokee County has 124 rural 8th grade students graduating.
Marcus is considering hooking up with the gas line from Sioux City to Cherokee. It will have to be voted on by the town citizens.
85 Years Ago -1936
Miss Luella Digel and Kenneth Nagle were married Friday, May 29th.
Ament Chevrolet Company sold a Chevy town sedan to John Sand and a standard coach to Vance Marquis.
Ted Proctor, who is stationed at the CCC Camp in Missouri Valley, spent the weekend in Marcus with relatives and friends.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Rachel Sorenson of Spencer will replace Miss Helmer as home economics and phy- sical education teacher at Marcus Public. Hermione Allen will succeed Phyllis Lang as English and dramatics teacher.
Clarence Beck, Lavern Heesch, Roger Leavitt and Paul Norris, are among 5,000 Des Moines Register and Tribune carriers, invited to the Carriers’ Convention and Frolic in Des Moines June 9th.
Nicholas T. Wells, 95, of Marcus and James P. Martin, 93, of Sutherland, are the only two surviving Civil War Veterans in this Terrotory.
Otto Frangenberg is driving a new Studebaker sedan he purchased through local dealer, L. M. Miller.
75 Years Ago -1946
Frances Zembsch received the award for her four years with the highest average as a senior at Marcus Holy Name.
Ned Bork SM 3/C, who has been spending a 3 weeks leave in the parental Ned Bork, Sr. home, will leave June 8 for Great Lakes Naval Center where he will receive his release from the US Navy.
Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Gund and Miss Cora Gund attended a family dinner in the Dave. W. Stewart home in Sioux City Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cantine departed for Long Beach, CA to make their home. He was recently discharged from the Navy and will be employed by the Kaiser-Frazier plant.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mrs. Merle Sand hosted a tenth birthday party for son, Chuck. A group of boys enjoyed playing and a delicious lunch.
Maureen O’Hara and Macdonald Carey star in “Comanche Territory” showing in the local Lyric.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sand are the parents of a 9 lb. 4 oz. son, born Monday, May 28. He has a sister and a brother to welcome him home.
65 Years Ago -1956
Earl Gill made his last mail carrier trip on Rural Route #3 out of Marcus, after serving 38 years. Cliff Means will take over temporarily until a permanent appointment is made.
Mrs. John Sand will attend the graduation of her nephew, Jim Nicholson, at LeMars Central High school Friday evening. Mrs. Sand and her sister, Mrs. Don Nicholson, will go to New York to attend the graduation of her nephew and Mrs. Nicholson’s son, Jack, from West Point Military Academy June 5th.
Fern Letsche, a recent Holy Name graduate, has accepted a position as operator in the West Iowa Telephone Company.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kenney, Rick, Jean, Mary, Joel and Donna, of Corpus Christi, TX
are vacationing with relatives in the Maryhill and Marcus areas.
Elvis Presley stars in “Flaming Star” with Barbara Eden, showing in the Marland.
Sister Mary Joel Kramer, B.V.M. will return to the mainland after teaching seven years in Hawaii.
Melvin Mayer is taking rabies shots after being bit by a stray dog.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Ray Brady, local insurance man, was elected president of the Marcus Jaycees.
Mr. and Mrs. James Whited are the parents of a 6 pound, 14 1/2 ounce son, born Thursday, May 19. He is named David James.
Marcus Posmtaster Gerald Pallesen announced that applications are being taken for the position of substitute clerk in the Marcus post office, Starting pay is $2.57 an hour with automatic yearly pay increases, as well as 26 days vacation annually and 13 sick days a year. They have an excellent retirement plan, group insurance and the job is open to male and females.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Dennis Peavey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Peavey and a 1964 graduate of Marcus High, received his Certified Public Accountant Certificate. He is working with Lybrand, Ross Bros. and Montgomery, one of the Big 8 public accounting firms.
Harold Hipple, a 25 year veteran teacher at Marcus Community High School, was honored at awards night Friday, May 21.
Linda Peterson of Marcus and Wayne Kolbeck of LeMars were recently married in the Nativity Catholic Church in Sioux City. They are making their home in Battle Creek, IA.
45 Years Ago – 1976
The Marshall Ash tree that was planted at the Gund Library by the Marcus Garden Club was donated by former Marcus resident, Lillian Birch Snyder.
Jane Bush of Cleghorn was chosen by the Cleghorn Auxiliary to attend Girls State June 5-12 at the UNI at Cedar Falls. Nancy Donaldson is the alternate
Chrystal Lynn Bond and Brian Gates are planning a July 31 wedding in Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Ronald Seggerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Seggerman of Marcus, was initiated into the C.L.A.S.S. Morningside College honor society. It stands for character, leadership, ability, scholarship and service.
A large household and antique auction sale of John Barry, Sr. will be held Saturday, May 30. Auctioneers will be Darrell Peters, Vernon Meyer and Lloyd Robinson.
Marcus Merchants fast pitch softball team opened the season with a pair of wins over the Merrill Merchants. Paul Bentz was the winning pitcher in both games. Steve Specht and Randy Hanson had home runs.
35 Years Ago – 1986
A Crazee Crazy Day will be held in Marcus, Friday May 30th with the merchants offering bargains galore, starting with a Farmer’s Breakfast in front ot Curt’s Antiques on Main Street.
Marcus Holy Name Boys CYO Basketball team won the Consolation game at the Tournament held in Fonda. Leo Schwartz was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Mr. and Mrs. Bucky Tentinger, Jamie and Keith of Mesquite, TX spent Memorial weekend in Marcus with reiatives.
30 Years Ago – 1991
The MMC 4X400 relay team won first place at State in Des Moines. Deanna Henke, Stacey Collins, Jean Plagman and Donna Hansen, make up the team.
John and June Stamer of Marcus celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday, June 2, at the Marcus Club House, hosted by their children and families.
Thirty-two seniors of MMC received their diplomas. Dennis Bindner, Donald Terry II, Jason Brown and Rory Booth are pictured in the Senior Spotlight. Dennis, Donald and Jason plan further education and Rory did not indicate what his plans are.
