125 Years Ago – 1896
Quite a numer of people enjoyed the joint exercises and raising of our flag Memorial Day at the Convent School. Alex Bird typed the program so people could follow it. The closing of the school year will be in the Opera House June 25.
Decoration Day was not observed to any great extent in Marcus. Old soldiers, R.M. Porter, S.M. Briggs, Charley Wilson, Peter Webber and Joe Wirt, went to the cemetery to decorate the grave of the Unknown.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Miss Sophia Olson of Marcus and Alfred Nordenson of Sioux City were married in the home of the bride at 1:00 a.m. Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Barnes are the parents of a girl baby who arrived Saturday night to make her permanent home with them.
115 Years Ago – 1906
James Dempsey and Collins Bros. have put cement walks in front of their Main Street property.
J.P. Roe has purchased the old Christian Parsonage and will move it to lot on lower Main Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Armand Naffziger departed Tuesday morning for Wayne, NE to make their future home. Best wishes from family and friends go with them.
105 Years Ago – 1916
The 56th Regiment of the Iowa National Guard will hold their annual camp at Webster City beginning August 17 and continuing for 10 days.
Joe Wagner of Remsen is visiting his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Collins.
Lloyd Barnes and his daughter, Madge, are at the bedside of his mother, Mrs. Ed Barnes, in Upham, ND. She is seriously ill.
Agnes Collins, Jane Campbell, Angeline Sand and Agnes Healy will receive their diplomas from Marcus Holy Name.
Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Reimers are the parents of an 8 pound son born May 30th.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Otto Schneider held his grand opening of his new meat market in Cleghorn June 2nd. Hundreds of people attended and enjoyed the free lunch and the new building.
Nine girls and 2 boys received diplomas from Marcus Holy Name this year. The boys were Francis Dunn and Elmer Knebel.
Mrs. H.J. Reimers honored their son, John, on his 10th birthday with a party for 10 of his friends. They enjoyed games and lunch.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Marcus Public will have 20 graduates this year, including Charles Addy, Dorothy McDaniel and Wilma Raetz. Father Cooke will present diplomas to 9 seniors at Holy Name.
Raymond Geringer, 23, of Marcus and Marie Haller, 23, of Plymouth County, were married Thursday by Rev, Arrasmith. They will make their home on a farm north of Marcus.
Mrs. Mary Earnest and her daughter, Esther, moved into their new home just vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Treinen, who moved to Sioux City.
85 Years Ago -1936
There were 35 seniors graduating from Marcus High. The high school held their annual picnic at Mill Creek. The junior high had theirs at the Ralph McConnell farm, the 4th and 5th graders went to the Mile Corner, the 2nd and 3rd to the playground and the kindergartners and 1st grade went to Sjostrom’s Park.
Frank Huckert is driving a new Buick coupe.
Mr. and Mrs. John Ernst and son of Akron were Sunday visitors in the John Snyder home in Marcus Township.
Thirty acolytes from Holy Name, Father Cooke, Father Ahlers and the BVM Sisters held their annual picnic at Storm Lake.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Mrs. Harry Hendrickson took her son, Donald, and Paul Norris to Iowa City to compete in the Brain Derby in English II.
Mary Jean Knox flew out of Omaha Thursday to spend her vacation in the home of her Uncle James Nield at Palo Alto, CA.
Maurice Keffeler purchased the 240 acre farm, known as the Henry Quirin estate, one mile east of Marcus. J. F. Collins Agency handled the sale.
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Sand have named their new son, Charles Robert. Dorothy Jean Heinis is staying at the Sand residence during the absence of Mrs. Sand.
75 Years Ago -1946
Dorothy McConnell of Marcus received her 2 year elementary teacher’s certificate from Morningside College in Sioux City.
Dean Barnes and Bob Stowater departed on a 2 week fishing trip in Minnesota.
Jackie Nicholson, who has been attending Holy Name School here and making his home with his Grandmother, Mrs. J. B. Dunn, returned to his home at LeMars.
Ruth Anderson and Ilene Nelson, both 1942 graduates of Marcus High, were graduates of the St. Joseph School of Nursing at Sioux City.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Bass returned home from Atlantic City, NJ . where they attended the National Convention of The Rotary organization.
Van Heflin plays the role of Jim Bridger, famous Indian scout in the film “Tomahawk” showing in the Lyric. The entire picture was filmed in the Black Hills and Badlands of SD.
Margaret McGivern received her B A. Degree from Rosary College in River Forest, IL.
65 Years Ago -1956
Dr. Charles Ihle of Cleghorn will be honored as he rounds out 50 years of practice there. A banquet will be held June 23.
Jack Dunn will replace H. C. Stientjes as a member of the Marcus Council. Stientjes is leaving Marcus for Albert City.
Former Marcusite, Art Slagter, bowled a 300 game at Reseda, CA. Duane Bork, a student at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, scored the seasons first hole-in-one on Elmwood Course.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs Alfred Dorr attended the graduation of their grandson, David Spears, from the Kentucky Military Institute at Louisville, KY
Jeannine Woodall, an x-ray technology student at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sioux City, spent a 4 day vacation in the parental Wilmer Woodall home.
Mrs. G.A. Wiedemeier entertained at a June first coffee in honor of Mrs. Otto Frangenberg’s birthday. Relatives and neighbors joined them.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Meriden-Cleghorn will have 23 graduates this year. Their class motto: “Unless God Be with Us, All Hope Is In Vain”.
Mr. and Mrs. Barton Sangwin of Meriden attended the Archer Oil Convention and Banquet at Omaha May 21 and 22.
Gloria Jean Carlson of Marcus and Lee Douglas Stafne of Balaton, MN were married Saturday, May 7 in Faith Lutheran Church at Marcus. They will make their home in Balaton.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Johnson, LaVonne, Beverly and Rhonda, moved from the Meriden area and were welcomed as new Cleghorn residents.
Robert Mitchum and George Kennedy star in “The Good Guys and the Bad Guys” showing in the Marland.
A Grand Opening of the Brockmann’s new poultry and processing plant, near Paullina, was held Saturday, June 5.
45 Years Ago – 1976
The State of Iowa flag will fly over Mt. Rushmore June 28 and 29 as a Bicentennial salute.
Janice Johnson of Marcus and Stephen Fox of Albion, NE are planning a summer wedding. She is a teacher and he is employed in Columbus, NE.
A Mother-Daughter buffet was held May 25th in the Meriden Evangelical Free Church, sponsored by the Women’s Missionary Society. There were 121 attending. The theme was “Reflections on the Past”.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Donna Gravenish was honored at a family dinner in the parental Cletus Gravenish home Sunday. After a two week vacation, she will attend summer school at Spearfish, SD.
Genevieve Rose Bindner of Marcus and David Edward Howe were married May 23 in Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City. They will make their home at Harrison. AR.
Lenny Dorr, Charles Hansen, Anna Hartle, Steve Kunzweiler, Lori Glackin, Lisa Shea and Donald Cave, all of Marcus received diplomas from Iowa Lakes Community College.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Former Marcusite, Larry Weber ,and his wife, Helen, now of LeMars, are the parents of a 9 lb. son, born May 16, named Nicholas Warren.
Sister Geraldine Ament of Omaha returned home after spending 2 weeks in the Bill Ament home.
Peter Grauer, a WWI veteran, spoke to the 4th grade at Marcus and shared souvenirs of the war and discussed the life of a soldier with them. Kyle Schmillen and Tom Wurth interviewed him.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Steve Puhrmann and Debbie Brownmiller announce their engagement and a fall wedding is being planned.
Julia LoVan, Heather Mortensen, Matt Hueser and James Bierman, 5th graders at Marcus Puclic School, were honored for perfect attendance for this year.
The first annual ice cream day will be held in Cleghorn Saturday, June 8th. The Cleghorn Lions Club, the Meriden Evangelical Free Church, the Cleghorn Fire Department and the American Legion Auxiliary, will sponsor activities and food.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Carla Lehan and Tom Wiese, both of Marcus, are planning an August 17th wedding in Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus.
Hilda Rupp, Arlene Schlenger and Joan Peters of Cherokee were Friday afternoon guests of Rita Donaldson and enjoyed an afternoon of canasta. They had an evening meal in Sue’s Cafe.
Lee and Harriet Samuelson Barnes are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in Chandler, AZ.
20 Years Ago – 2001
A new Wick home went up in Cleghorn by Loren and Lynn Mohning. The floors and walls are built at the factory in Mazomanie, WI. Open house will be held June 23 and 24, for people to inspect the quality of materials and the craftmanship that goes into all Wick homes.
Jeremy Mulder of LeMars and Susan Smith of Marcus are planning an August 4th wedding in the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in LeMars.
Larry and Joyce Alesch Keffeler are visiting relatives in this area, especially their mothers, Clara Alesch and Armella Keffeler, who are both residents of the Marcus HCC.
