Construction Class Has Project Nearby
By Blaine Wicks
The MMCRU construction class is building a garage across the street from the school for a project. It started in the middle of February once all of the snow melted because it would make it easier to work.
Mr. Long is the teacher for the project. Mr. Long said, “We decided to do this project because it was so close to the shop; we can just walk to the job site and simply it was a great learning opportunity for students in the Construction 3 class. We have a double period set aside for Construction 3, so we had planned on doing larger scale projects and a garage really fit what we were looking for.”
The school’s shop doesn’t have to use any materials because all of the materials were already supplied by Mr. Stevens. Mr. Long also said, “I think this class gets a real world feel about the construction industry, they have to deal with the weather, issues on the site, ordering materials, and working with the customers. They have to manage material and plan when things need to be ordered and what needs to be done next. Time management and teamwork are some major factors in this class.”
The goal is to have this project done by the end of the school year. Participation in this project will help students find construction jobs in the future and would be good for the school.
Student Austin Paradise said, “This project will help with knowing what I have to do with building a project, what the real world is like, and how I can prepare for dealing with customers, workers and how I can deal with weather, building plans, and tools. We make sure the customers are happy and I feel good that I helped make something for someone else.”
