Hundred of friends paid tribute to Mrs. William Kenny at final rites held Wednesday morning, September 11, at Holy Name Church in Marcus.
The Wirt estate farm of 240 acres operated by Ivan Addy, as sold to Mrs. Krier of Remsen fo r$125 per acre.
Mr. & Mrs. J.H. Smith of Cleghorn will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Saturday, September 14. Open House will be held at their home.
Clarence Beck, after 15 years in Marcus, has sold his store and locker plant to L.C. Dierking of Sioux City, who is here and preparing for the reopening of the store.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Russel Mouw, manager of the Marcus Hardware received the sad news that his father, Neal Mouw, 69, passed away at his home in Sioux Center, Monday, September 17.
Lt. John Dunn called his mother, Mrs. J.B. Dunn, and his sister Irene, from Boston, Mass. Saturday and said that he had arrived safely in the states Saturday from Europe. He expects to arrive home this week.
Saturday, September 22 is the opening day for Sjostrom’s Grocery Store, which is located at the north end of Main Street, formerly occupied by Straub’s Store.
Mr. & Mrs. Amos Weber received word that their son, Joe, has recently been promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
S/Sgt. Dale Dorr arrived from Jefferson Barracks, MO Friday evening having received a discharge September 13 from the Army

Mr. & Mrs. Harold Wallin are the parents of a baby boy born Sunday morning, September 3. The little fellow weighed eight pounds, 15 ounces and has been named Jeffrey Charles.
Ninety-nine high school students registered for classes at the public school Monday morning, with several to report later.
Holy Name High School registered 58 pupils in high school with the opening of the year Monday.
Mr. & Mrs. Howard Wallin are the parents of a girl born Friday, September 1, at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. The little miss weighed seven pounds, 12 ounces. She has been named Beverly Ann.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mrs. Mary Ann Quirin, 94, passed away Wednesday evening at the home of her son, E.P. Quirin. She and her husband came to Marcus 73 years ago, settling on a farm south of Marcus.
A/3c Wilmer Ogren, who is stationed at West Palm Beach, Florida is spending a leave in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Ogren.
Tom King has resigned as water commissioner of the town of Marcus a position he had held for the past 10 years.
A group of friends and neighbors pleasantly surprised Mrs. Dean Berger on her birthday Friday afternoon.
A family picnic was held Sunday noon at the Lewis Dorr home in honor of Mr. &Mrs. Loren Dorr and two children of Des Moines, who were spending the Labor Day weekend here.

Funeral services for Mrs. Estelle Christy White, 84, were held in the Nelson Funeral Home in Marcus Tuesday afternoon, September 6 by the Rev. Kenneth Bressler.
Claude Gross spent from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars as the result of a freak accident at Evans Implement, where he is employed. He was putting knives in a baler when a piece of steel struck him in the left arm, severing an artery.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Paul Kestel on August 30 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. He weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces and has been named John Gerard.
The annual chicken supper sponsored by St. Ann Guild will be held at Holy Name hall Sunday, September 11.
The marriage of Rose Mary Nacke daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nacke of Marcus and Franklin Hogan, son of Mrs. Mayme Hogan and the late Frank Hogan of Pocahontas, was solemnized Saturday morning, September 3.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Unkur will be honored at an open house Sunday, September 19 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ted Unkur at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ted Unkur to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
Miss Margie Keffeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Keffeler of Marcus, has been accepted for September entrance at Briar Cliff College.
Linda Marie Rupp of Lincoln, NE, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rupp of Marcus and Keith Finkral, son of Mr. & Mrs. C Allen Finkral of Madison, NE were united in marriage Sunday, August 14 at Holy Name Church.
Lee Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee Johnson, celebrated his seventh birthday Friday.

Mary Frances Alesch, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leo Alesch, arrived home last Thursday after spending the summer in Europe.
The new third grade teacher at Grand Meadow is Mrs. Claudia Page of Kingsley, Mark Knoell is the new sixth grade teacher.
Larry Bird was taken to Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee for observation and test.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Kauffman of Cleghorn are the parents of a nine pound daughter born Saturday, August 22 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee. She has been named De Ann Marie and has one sister, Lauri.
Mrs. Julian Cuevas, the former Linda Ferrin, graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing in Omaha at exercises August 7.

Victor Blessing, 71, of Luverne. Minnesota, formerly of Paullina, died, August 22 at a hospital in Sioux Falls of a brief illness. He was editor of the Marcus News from 1942-1945.
Mr. & Mrs. John Leavitt were honored on Saturday evening, August 30, at their home by a large group of friends and relatives who came to help them celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Rev. Vernon Cavens will preach his first sermon September 7 as pastor of the Cleghorn Presbyterian and Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian churches.
The Marcus Community School class of 1965 recently held their 10th reunion with a social home in Marcus, Iowa, and a steak dinner at the Marcus Community Golf Club.
An open miscellaneous shower will be held for Mrs. Doug Bierman, the former Pat Delaney, on Sunday, September 7 in the municipal building in Marcus.

LuAnn Grauer, daughter of Floyd and Delores Grauer from Marcus, has completed the requirements necessary for graduation from the Medical Assistant Program at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls.
Mr. & Mrs. Glen Armstrong of Fort Worth, TX, are the proud parents of their first child, a son, Michael Thomas. Great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ed Polson and Rose Galles of Marcus.
JoAnn Wilberdang, bride elect of Chuck Tentinger, was honored on Sunday afternoon, August 17 at Holy Name hall with an open house miscellaneous shower beginning with a dessert luncheon.
Marie Deichman will be hostess to Birthday club on Thursday, September 11.
