110 Years Ago – 1916
The Women’s organization of Marcus very earnestly invite the public to hear Miss Elizabeth Perkins speak on Equal suffrage at the Idler Hour Theatre on Tuesday evening.
Charles Bush last night reported to Sioux City police headquarters that he was robbed of $35.00 in the rear of a Jones street barber shop.
100 Years Ago – 1926
Joe Dempsey is the sole proprietor of a new business venture in Marcus which will hereafter be known as the Marcus Auto Exchanged.
Mrs. William Garvin, proprietor of Garvin Hat Shoppe, in company with Edna Healy, returned Friday from Omaha where they attended Market Week.
Since the announcement was mad that the board of supervisors would gravel a six mile stretch south of Simpson Bethel instead of the 12 mile stretch which would connect with the Pierson gravel, residents of Grand Meadow were not so please. They believe this graveling should be completed.
95 Years Ago -1931
Sjostrom Bros Inc creamery plant began operations Wednesday when 2,000 pounds of butter were made in two churnings. The plant is located in the basement of the Sjostrom building. It is equipped with the latest in butter making equipment.
Many friends and relatives were shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. Alice Dalton who passed away Friday, following a few days of illness of pneumonia.
Mrs. Floyd Hamilton plans to start a kindergarten in her home beginning April 6 which will continue for two months.
90 Years Ago -1936
The annual spelling contest was held at the Holy Name school on Friday afternoon with the sixth, seventh and eighth grader pupils competing.
Paul Norris was the winner of the contest and will represent the school at the Cherokee county annual spelling contest.
A wheel of fortune spins toward the American Legion hall in Marcus when next Thursday evening, March 26 brings to town the radio amateur contest for the 9th district of the American Legion Auxiliary which will be sponsored by the local Auxiliary unit.
Samuel Pendleton, well known farmer of Amherst township and early settler of Cherokee county, passed away in his home.
John Greff, who has lived on a farm west of town for about 46 years, has moved to Marcus and is making his home with daughter Ceclia and son John Jr.
85 Years Ago -1941
Floyd Graham has resigned his position as manager of the Farmers Elevator here and accepted a like position at Webster City with an elevator there.
At the regular meeting of the Marcus volunteer fire department Joe Ament was elected fire chief to succeed Alfred Dorr. Ben Enneking was reappointed assistant chief and John Clarkson was elected secretary and treasurer to succeed C.P. Dorr who had served twelve years in that position.
Mrs. Sarah Edgar, 89, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dessa Knox, Tuesday morning, March 18. She had been ill about two weeks.
A boxing and wrestling program is being started at the Marcus high school under the direction of Coach H.F. Birney and Ashley Edsall, the commercial instructor. Twelve boys are out for boxing under the coaching of Edsall, and Mr. Birney also has twelve being trained in the art of wrestling.
Helen Nieman rolled a game of 183 last night in the woman’s league for the highest game of the week.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Iowa trappers harvested the second most valuable fur crop in the history of the state during the 1945-46 trapping season. Iowa’s annual fur crop exceeded Alaska’s in value this year by more than one million dollars.
Mrs. Elizabeth Mohning of Remsen called in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Schmillen Tuesday afternoon.
Carl Dorr has purchased the Dixson Dairy equipment and will open for business the first of April. A daily delivery will be made.
Mrs. Harry Jahnel of Tekumsen, NE arrived Tuesday evening to spend several days in the home of her sister Mrs. Floyd Nagle.
The danger of spoilage of high moisture corn on farms in north central and northwest Iowa is very great, according to a survey made in the last week by the agricultural adjustment administration. The survey revealed that more than 65 percent of the corn in 18 of the 19 counties contains form 20 to 30 percent or more moisture.
75 Years Ago -1951
Damage to the extent of about $6,000 was incurred in a farm fire south of Marcus at about ten o’clock Wednesday evening. The blaze destroyed the cattle and hog barns on the farm 14 miles south and 1 mile west of Marcus, tenanted by Gunnard Johnson.
Clinton Weber received word last Tuesday of the death of his father, John Weber, who died in a hospital at Marion, Indiana following a stroke.
Richard Ulrich of Redfield was hurt in an unusual accident last week. As he inflated a large tractor tire, the tire exploded after receiving about 45 pounds of pressure. Ulrich was thrown ten feet and knocked unconscious. The explosion was heard a block away.
Miss May Tool, will be retiring this spring, after 50 years of teaching in the schools at Ackley. She joined the faculty in 1901.
Mrs. M.J. Kelly and Mary Ellen received word last week of the death of their nephew and cousin, Dick Ronan, 25, who was a senior student at the St. Louis University.
70 Years Ago -1956
A burnt-out motor at the Marcus Cooperative Lockers caused considerable excitement about ten o’clock Tuesday evening. Tenants of the building detected the smoke and turned in an alarm.
The Marcus public schools submitted winning papers in the annual United Nations contest, and their papers have been entered into the national contest. They are Annette Dorr, a senior and Barbara Mouw, a junior.
Mark Bancroft, Marcus attorney, was elected president of the board of directors of the Marcus Independent School District at an organization meeting Monday evening.
Henry Alesch has purchased the home west of Holy Name Church built last fall by Klingborn Construction. Mr. & Mrs. Alesch plan to move to town this spring and his son, Jim will take over the farming operations.
Ray Gates was re-elected chief at the annual meeting of the Marcus Fire Department held last Thursday evening.
65 Years Ago -1961
The news this week carries an advertisement for the closing out farm sale of Elmer Ricker, who farms south of Marcus. The sale will be Tuesday, March 28.
The Klingborg Lumber Supply of Marcus will hold open house this Friday at its place of business here. Carl Klingbor operates the business, formerly the Rock Island Lumber Company branch, he bought a year ago.
Burdette Hanson, superintendent of the Marcus Community schools, was one of 50 Iowa educators chosen to attend the regional meeting of the American Association of School Administration at St. Louis last week.
Orville Hobbs, 70, a lifelong resident of this community, died at his home here suddenly Monday, March 20. His death apparently was due to heart failure.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Reinholdt and family of Pierson were Sunday afternoon visitors in the home of Mrs. Midred Briggs.
60 Years Ago -1966
Tuesday, the first day of spring, after getting off to a fine start, turned sour and ended up with the worst blizzard of the year, and Wednesday left this part of the country in shambles.
Loyel Vogts of Blairstown, recently caught a 23-lb norther pike while ice fishing on Big Trout Lake in Minnesota. The pike was 41 ½ inches long.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 28 at the Prince of Peach Lutheran Church in Minneapolis for Ray Portor, 61, who passed away February 25 following an extended illness.
Mrs. Walter Garlow retuned home Saturday after spending the past several months with her daughters and families.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Johnson were visitors last Wednesday in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Joslin.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Grover Morning, 84 passed away Saturday, March 20, at Floyd Valley Memorial Hospital in LeMars. He had made his home in the Marcus Community for the past 40 years.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Roethler were visitors Sunday afternoon in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Kass at Remsen.
Sid Barwick, son of Mr. & Mrs. C.J. Barwick, a student at Iowa State University, participating in the Air Force ROTC program there, was among cadets receiving awards at the annual Dining In ceremonies. He received a superior performance ribbon.
William Ewart passed away Sunday, March 21 at the age of 73 at Sioux Valley Hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Means and family were visitors Sunday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Catherine Shefstad of Remsen.
50 Years Ago -1976
Jim Smith of James Smith Insurance, has been named a recipient of the coveted Agency Achievement Award for 1975 by Grinell Mutual Reinsurance Company.
Two are students will be among the 55 Mount Marty College students participating in the Colleges annual chorus tour.
Lenny Seidel, sacred music concert pianist will be presented in concert at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church on Thursday, March 18.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson met their daughter, Linda, and friend of Milwaukee at Des Moines Saturday evening returning home Sunday.
45 Years Ago – 1981
The Golf Course superintendent of the Year Award was presented to Bill Pedersen, superintendent at the Shanandoah American Legion Country Club golf course, at the annual meeting of the Iowa Golf Course Superintendent Association.
Lauretta Nagle received the CAR $100 Endowment Fund pin presented by Wade Berger, State President of Children of the American Revolution. The 13-star pin is worn by the outstanding support to patriotic youth group.
Harm Johnson, 74, Marcus died suddenly Thursday, March 12 at his home.
Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Smith spent Wednesday afternoon and evening with Mrs. Merle Hush and her great granddaughters, Wendy and Darci Moe, at Ormsby, Minn.
Mrs. Alma Goodburn, 80 of 613 Euclid Ave, Cherokee died Monday, Marh 9 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
