100 Years Ago – 1926
The surprise news today is the announcement that Henry Niemann, in business here since 187; has sold out. Late yesterday Mr. Niemann consumated a deal in which Joseph Hamilton becomes the owner of the store and his good will.
Rev. George Cook is expected to return home from his California trip some time the latter part of the week.
Fred Nacke moved to the J.C. Means farm which he purchased. Ray Young moved to the W.D. Hazen farm and Glen countryman is retiring from the farm.
95 Years Ago -1931
Since the first of the year there have been a large number of hogs stolen from farms in the county at night. After the investigation two men have been arrested for the theft of the livestock.
A good vein of water was found on the Ray Oswald farm north of Cleghorn a few days ago after the well man had drilled 222 ft. They found 62 ft of water pumping does not seem to diminish to any great extent.
90 Years Ago -1936
Roman Treinen, proprietor of the Marcus cafe, has recently entirely redecorated and remodeled the interior of the cafe in a most up to date fashion.
The first robbery to occur in Marcus for some time took place early Sunday morning when thieves entered the J.P. Ament Chevrolet garage and rifled the cash register making away with $8.50 in cash and a flashlight.
A grant of $57,000 on an estimated cost $150,000 for street improvements was awarded to the town of Marcus among 65 Iowa projects approved by the PWA in a Senate hearing at Washington DC.
85 Years Ago -1941
Ivan Addy has purchased the 215 acre farm owned by the John Hancock Insurance company, two miles northwest of Marcus.
The first of two musical concerts for this spring will be given Friday night at the high school auditorium. Also a baton twirling exhibition will be seen which includes a high school and grade division.
A St. Patrick’s day boxing show and stag party will be held in the Legion next Monday night, March 17.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Mike Clark is leaving this week for Beaumont, TX where he has signed a contract to play baseball.
Poison gas killed 1,950 Americans last years. Carbon monoxide was the poisonous gas in eight out of every nine cases, and 97 percent of the victims were stricken in their own homes.
A streak of light coming down from the sky was seen by three employees of the Farmers Elevator at Scranton. They reported that the light appeared to hit the ground and then bounce, The meteor, which had completed burning before hitting the ground, was cause of the phenomenon. All that was visible were 13 small round spots of burned grass with light, white ash in the middle.
Mr. & Mrs. W.P. Schmillen visited Sunday in the Henry Falke home at Remsen with Mrs. Elizabeth Mohning.
75 Years Ago -1951
Funeral services for Harry Dalton, 42, scheduled for Saturday morning were postponed until Monday due to the severe weather conditions.
The house and acreage belonging to John Bentz located two blocks east of highway 143 will be sold at public auction this coming Saturday.
Mrs. Carl Miller, a former Marcus resident is a patient in the Memorial hospital at Alta., Mrs. Miller has been ill for a long time and would appreciate hearing from old friends and neighbors.
Dinner guests Sunday in the Stanley Addy home were Mr. & Mrs. Fred Deichmann, Ardys and Irvin.
Rev. C.C. Callahan, Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Addy and Mrs. Fred Mossman attended the Morningside Choir concert Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church in Cherokee.
70 Years Ago -1956
Bud Bork has opened the service adjacent of the East Side Tavern in Marcus, and is handling D-X and Skelly products.
Mrs. Ella Radcliffe, 82, of Chandler, Minneapolis passed away Monday and will be laid to rest in Marcus at the Amherst cemetery this Thursday afternoon.
Sunday dinner guests in the Paul Wankum home were Roger Negus of Sutherland, Bill Wankum of Sioux City and Mr. & Mrs. Gene Tschill and Carole.
When the water ran into the city reservoir at Osceola recently, it was the first time in 262 days that the lake had received any increase in its water supply.
Phillip Joseph Reynolds a former resident of Marcus, died suddenly at his home in Iowa City Saturday, March 10.
65 Years Ago -1961
Ann Braun and David Fritzgerald of Holy Name school, received awards in the senior division of the Westmar College Science fair held at LeMars last Saturday.
Ernest Hassenious, 79, of Los Angeles, CA, died Saturday, March 11 after a short illness. He was a former resident of Cleghorn.
Paul Beck son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Beck of Marcus, has accepted a position on the staff of the Los Angeles Times.
Western Cherokee Mutual Insurance Association of Marcus is joining in sponsorship of the telecast of the Iowa boys state high school basketball tournament March 17 & 18.
Ronny Sadler, a 5 foot 10 inch senior guard on the Grand Meadow basketball team, broke all the scoring recorded at his school this past season as well as being recognized as the highest scorer in the state of Iowa this year with an average of 35.6 points per game.
60 Years Ago -1966
J.B. and R.B. Snyder bought Olsen’s Tap in Marcus at the sale last Friday night. Bud, who is operating the tavern, plans to have an open house soon.
Mrs. Eula Neir Muller, 68 of Cedar Falls, passed away at a hospital in Cedar Falls Tuesday evening.
Rev. E.J. Plummer will be honored.
Saturday evening by the members of Seba Lodge at the Masonic Temple in Marcus. Rev. Plummer will be awarded the 50 year certificate and pin.
Contracts have been signed for the construction of the new home of the Grace Methodist Church congregation of Marcus.
Sherrill Brownmiller, 59, lifelong resident of the Marcus community, passed away Saturday at his home following a short illness.
55 Years Ago – 1971
The Marcus Board of Education has accepted the resignation of Harold Hipple, high school social studies teacher, effective at the end of the present school year. Mr. Hipple has decided to retire after 25 years of teaching in the Marcus High School.
Mrs. Harold Peavey arrived home last Wednesday from a two week stay in California. She visited in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Peavey at Alhambra, making the acquaintance of her new grandson, Brian Howard.
Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Means and family were dinner guests Sunday in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Chase at South Sioux City, NE.
Mrs. Herb Rohlfsen returned home Tuesday evening from Rochester where she had an emergency appointment at the Mayo Clinic.
Coaches of Little Sioux Conference met recently to pick members of the conference teams. Dale Carver earned a first team berth and Jim Delaney made second team.
50 Years Ago -1976
Several county residents will be attending the Northwest Iowa Farm Convention sponsored by Congressman Berkley Bedell which opens in Washington Wednesday, March 10.
All the Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts met at the holy Name Church on Monday, March 8 to celebrate Girl Scout Week. Mothers and friends were invited to the special Juliet Low Friendship program honoring the founder of Girl Scouting in the US.
Mrs. Josphine Alesch spent Wednesday in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Betz in Sioux City.
Forty five Marcus junior high and grade school students went to the junior high music contest held at Morningside College.
Eric Nelson was a Friday overnight guest in the home of his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Carl Mayer.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Ann Harman and Jim Horner were united in marriage on Saturday, February 14.
Remsen special Hubie Northern of Huble’s Greenhouse in Remsen recently displayed a six foot tall poinsettia with 95 blooms. The plant is five years old and has a 1 ½ inch diameter trunk.
Funeral services for Mrs. Henry Goodburn who passed away March 9 after a short illness will be held Thursday, March 12.
Weekend guests in the Lawrence Rupp home were Mr. & Mrs. Keith Rupp, Jennie and Joe of Lincoln.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Schnoes, Rose Schnoes, Minnie McClintock and Ann Horn were weekend guests in the Ray Schnoes home in Minnepolis.
