110 Years Ago – 1916
William Holland, the horse buyer, brought two carloads of horses and mules at M.R. Nagle’s barn last Monday.
Chester Wells, son of Mr. & Mrs. N.T. Wells, and Lenora Quiggles, son of Mr. & Mrs. H.S. Quiggles of Melvin were married at the place February 23. They will reside on the Wells farm near Melvin.
The marriage of Vincentia Collins, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Collins, and James Cronin, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Cronin, Sr., Oyens took place in Holy Name Church in Marcus March 1 with the Rev. Father O’Reilly officiating.
95 Years Ago -1931
Rep. J.F. Ryland of Marshall count introduced a bill in the house of Representatives Monday that would divide the state into nine congressional districts instead of present eleven.
Louie Seggerman was awarded ninth place recently in a subscription contest put on by a national movie magazine, winning a Chevrolet car. Mr. Seggerman took the $525 in cash which was optional.
Stanley Smith recently completed a deal for the purchase of the residence property on Pine Street two blocks east of Main Street.
90 Years Ago -1936
Death overtook one of Marcus most prominent citizens February 21, when P.P. Holm, 79, a resident of Cherokee county for more than 50 years, passed away on the 54th anniversary of his marriage.
One of the important events of the year, now being planned, is a stock and industrial show to be held early next autumn. The show has the support of the Better Marcus Club.
A.I. Birch has accepted an invitation to speak before the Indian Club at Cherokee March 6. Each month out of town speakers are secured for this large organization.
Perry Miller, 74, Marcus resident for 54 years, passed away suddenly at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City on Thursday morning, February 27, after an illness of only one day.
Mr. & Mrs. W.P. Schmillen and Margaret will move to Auchstetter house, the residence to be vacated by the Schmillens, having been purchased by harry Neir who now resides northwest of Marcus.
85 Years Ago -1941
Niemann’s jewelry store has been undergoing redecoration this week. Pepple and Mueller worked there the first part of the week painting the ceiling.
It was announced this week that there have been 47 new automobiles and trucks registered in Cherokee county in the past three weeks. Eight of the purchases of new cars are from Marcus.
The first cotton mattress factory in Cherokee county under the government program to dispose of surplus cotton is in operation in Marcus in the basement of the Carmel Lutheran Church.
Lois Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Anderson, won the free permanent for the winning name in the contest to name the new beauty parlor. The winning name is the Beauty Box.
The Marcus pumphouse has undergone a series of changes the past few weeks. The new pump, new arrangement of the building and new paint have made it a modern pumping station, clean and sanitary.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Francis Bierman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bierman of Pierson, was honorably discharged on Monday, February 18.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Zangger and family were honored at a farewell party at the Municipal building last Friday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Jake Dixson and Darleen and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Tiffany called on Mrs. Leroy Dixson and daughters in Cherokee Saturday evening.
Mrs. Alice Thompson celebrated her 90th birthday last Friday by holding an open house.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Huff and children of Cherokee were Sunday dinner guests in the William Dickson home.
75 Years Ago -1951
A steady stream of friends and patrons visited the Dorr hatchery and Produce last Saturday when the Marcus institution celebrated its fifteenth anniversary.
A very sizable group of football fans gathered in the Municipal building Tuesday evening to hear Pat Boland line coach of the University of Iowa’s football team, and to view films of the Hawkeye’s 1950 season.
John Ernst, 64, a life long resident of this community, passed away about seven, o’clock Sunday evening following a lingering illness.
Joe Sibert, of Waterloo, caught the chickenpox from his little granddaughter recently.
Sunday evening dinner guests in the Marvin Seel home were Mr. & Mrs. Herman Ritter and family, Mr. & Mrs. Nels and Gary Wayne of Meriden.
70 Years Ago -1956
The parishioners of Holy Name parish honored Father J.T. Fitzpatrick at the farewell party on Thursday evening.
The Farmers State Bank was honored last week for having exceeded the 1955 quota for sales of Series E and H savings bonds to individual customers.
More than 2,000 natives of Iowa gathered at Encante Park in Phoenix, AZ on February 22 for an Iowa picnic.
Dinner guests in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Earnest Kauffman were Mr. & Mrs. Loren Kauffman and Teresa, Leo Kauffman, and Mrs. Alvina Rosch.
65 Years Ago -1961
Larry’s Lanes of Marcus, operated by Mr. & Mrs. Larry Slagter, will hold an open house this Saturday.
The second grade students at Marcus elementary school have been studying the post office. They wrote letters, studied how mail travels, and rooms. At the end of the unit they made a tour of the post office and were shown many phases of the post of the office and how it operates.
Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine Galles, 85, longtime resident of the Remsen vicinity who died Monday at a LeMars hospital.
A pretty winter shower was held Sunday afternoon, February 26, at the Municipal building in Marcus honoring Mrs. Jerome Letsche, a recent bride.
Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Geringer were dinner guests Sunday in the home of Mrs. Geringer’s mother, Mrs. Anna Holler at Remsen.
Holy Name’s Wildcats will have the bountiful privilege of facing powerful Calumet in the Thursday evening semifinals of the Cherokee sectional tournament.
Kimber Variety will hold a grand opening in its new quarters this Saturday.

Charles Simons of Marcus continues to harvest trophies with his show cattle at the Sioux Empire show at Sioux Falls. SD where Chuck’s Agnus steer was named Grand Champion.
Mrs. Nora Conley returned home Monday from the Sheldon hospital where she and her sister, Mrs. Carl Heesch have been hospitalized as the result of injuries received in a three vehicle accident.
Mr. & Mrs. Berdene Shafstads of Omaha were weekend guests in the home of Berdene’s parents, Mr. 7 Mrs. Wilbur Shefstad.
Licensed Iowa Hunters bagged 7,205 deer during the 1965 shotgun and bow and arrow season, nearly 500 less than last years record high.
Mrs. Sadie Roberts returned home Monday after spending the past three months in Santa Clara & Sunny Vale, CA.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Hans Delaney’s diamond proved to be the real one among the 2,000imitations given away in Ken’s Foodland’s recent promotion. The stone is at Hogue Jewelry where it is to be mounted.
Despite the could weather and snow a large group of friends gathered Saturday afternoon to pay their last respects to John Dulledge at his funeral.
The Journalism Class at Marcus high will be presenting a series of “School News” on KCHE radio every Saturday.
50 Years Ago -1976
Fire of an undetermined source completely destroyed a barn on the Doug Lauters farm south of Marcus last Saturday afternoon, February 21.
Charles Sand met with Japanese Ambassador and Mrs. Seiya Nishida in Des Moines at a reception held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Durden.
James McClintock, 92, a former Marcus resident, died February 21 at the Good Samaritan Rest Home. in Wagner, SD after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Lester Willis, Glen and Gary, and Carol Johns, all of Sibley, were Sunday supper guests in the Darrell Downs home.
Mrs. Allen Harzberg of Griswold has completed an unusual “autobiographical” quilt as a gift for her parents on their 50th wedding anniversary. The 80×104 inch quilt has 30 blocks that depict various events in the couples 50 years of marriage.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Boyd Byers, Meriden Cleghorn 7th grader, will represent MC junior high at the Area IV Spelling Bee in Sheldon.
Charles Bass, 62, of Remsen died Sunday, February 22 at a Sioux City hospital of an apparent heart attack after being stricken at his home.
The Jaws of Life Fund continues to grow rapidly as can be observed by the fund chart placed on the News office corner. Members report that at press time they are only about $1,000 short of the goal.
Mr. and Mrs. Harley Neir returned home Sunday from a five week vacation where they visited their daughter, Mr. & Mrs. John Todd and family in Denver, relatives and friends in Phoenix, AZ and other friends in LaJolla, CA.
Mr. & Mrs. Percy Fredrick were surprised on their 55th wedding anniversary Friday when members of their family came to help them observe this occasion.
Bill and Marcia Brady of Marcus are proud to announce the arrival of son, Ben, born Sunday, February 22.
