100 Years Ago – 1925
Flaherty and Bancroft will soon begin the erection of a new meat market located on the former site on Main, where their building burned down a month ago.
Mildred Johnson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Johnson last night won first place in the per-district declamatory contest of high school students held at Spencer.
Norman Smith and his mother, Mrs. A.J. Smith visited relatives in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin from Monday thru Thursday.
William Kielhorn, Luther Miller, Carl Peterson and Stanley Addy have purchased a clover huller.
95 Years Ago -1930
Moss Mellie Carey arrived last night from Los Angeles, California, where she had spent the past five months with her brother and sister-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Paul Carey.
Miss Alice McClintock is caring her arm in a sling as a result of breaking it while cranking a fliver.
Mrs. Phuchatorck was taken ill last week and removed to the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
The cause of the unsuspected death of Mrs. E.A. Wolfe, who passed away in Oregon March 11, was pneumonia.
George Bulyer who accompanied the body of his father to Marcus for the interment last wek left Tuesday for the return trip to McAllen, Texas. George owns an electric shop in McAllen, a town of 5,000 and likes the south very much. He says the corn is knee high down there and the canning factories are busy canning carrots, tomatoes and many kinds of vegetables.
Miss Naomi Niemann is expected to arrive on Saturday from Council Bluffs to spend a few days visiting her mother and sister.
90 Years Ago -1935
Earl Caauwe has begun the construction of a modern wood machine shop 22×24 ft in size. It will be equipped with modern machinery for turning out anything in wood. The building will be located on his property, the Barr place, which he purchased some time ago.
Tuesday night, March 26, the Marcus Boy Scout will play basketball with the Cherokee Boy Scouts at the high school auditorium. Between halves, Scoutmaster Wixcel will present awards for advancement and recognition.
C.I. Hagemann, proprietor of the Hagemann Kennels, shipped a litter of wire haired terriors to a pet shop in Pennsylvania last week. This same pet shop is endeavoring to obtain a contract with the local kennels to supply the shop with 100 dogs a year.
Mr. & Mrs. Chris Wilkens are rejoicing over the arrival of a 9 pound son Thursday, March 14.
85 Years Ago -1940
Harold Wood was re-elected superintendent of the Marcus Public School for the 16th year at this organization meeting of the Marcus public school board Monday.
About thirty friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Kuehn Sunday evening to celebrate the birthday anniversary of the former.
At the Food Shop, 2 lb can coffee 47 cents, 10 lbs beet sugar, cloth bag 49 cents, Perch, skinned and boned per lb 15 cents, and carrots, 2 bunches 9 cents.
Miss Flossie Seeger of Sioux City was a weekend visitor in the home of her father Louis Seeger.
Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Dorr are the proud parents of a son born Tuesday morning at the Sioux Valley Hospital.

Miss Mary Weber, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Amos Weber was among a class of 20 graduating from tej St. Vincent Accredited College of Nursing in Sioux City.
Mrs. Lulu Miller, who is moving to Cherokee in the near future, was pleasantly surprised at a farewell party given at her home last Thursday afternoon. About 40 friends and neighbors were present.
AMM 3/C and Mrs. Charles Kirchoff are the parents of a daughter born to them March 16 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Word has been received by relatives that Lt. Russel Rohfsen was killed in a plane accident March 7 on Morotor Island in the Pacific Theatre.
At the Firemen’s election last Thursday held at the Municipal Building Ray Walsh was elected Chief, Howard Peavy, Assistant Chief Bill Witter, Secretary and Treasurer and Felix Treinen Fire Marshall.

The Marcus community was saddened Friday by the death of S.A. Smorawske, 76, died Friday morning after a brief illness.
Joe Wagner, formerly with the Marcus Oil and Supply Company, has purchased the Texaco service station business at the south end of Main Street and is now in business.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the Christian Church in Cleghorn for J.J. Kinzel, 71, who passed away Thursday at his home in Cherokee. Mr. Kinzel was the father of Mrs. Charles Miller of Marcus and Mrs. Hillis Carris of Cleghorn.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Schmillen, Mrs. Alvina Schmillen and Mrs. Bud Hanno attended open house Tuesday afternoon in the John Holck home in Remsen honoring Chris Hock on his 94th birthday anniversary.
Alan Grauer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Grauer of Marcus, was recently initiated into the Delta Chi social fraternity at Ames after serving as pledge president for the past four months. Alan is a sophomore Economics student at Iowa State College.

Mrs. Mary Scott, 79 a resident of this community for over half a century died Saturday afternoon after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Chris Wilkens are the parents of a daughter born Sunday morning March 20 in Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Two hundred friends and relatives attended open house at the home of Mrs. Charles Quiren Thursday March 17 honoring her on her 75th birthday.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Garvin Saturday morning March 19 in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.

Mrs. Swanson, 78 of Marcus died at a Sioux Center hospital Friday, March 18 after several months illness.
Mary Ellen Kelly, authour, journalist and international director of the Sodality for Shut-ins, was honored in a very special way at a St. Patrick’s Day program presented and dedicated to her by the student body of Holy Name high school. It was at this time that Mary Ellen received officially her high school diploma 25 years after completing required courses by means of private tutoring.
David Fitzgerald, freshman of Holy Name school, won first place in the junior division at the Science Fair held March 19 at Westmar College in LeMars. He was awarded a plaque for his project on florescence in science.
The Marcus community was deeply shocked Thursday evening when it was revealed that Mr. & Mrs. W.L. Gund was on of the 63 people who lost their lives when a Florida bound airline crashed that afternoon on the southern border of Indiana.
Mary Ann Miller, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Miller of Marcus an dwinner of the Iowa Junior Miss competition sponsored by the Sioux City Junior Chamber of Commerce, left from Sioux City by plane Sunday, March 20 to attend the week long American Junior Miss pageant and contest at Mobile, Alabama.

Mrs. Elizabeth Collins, 90 passed away Friday, March 19 at her home in Marcus.
The board of judges of the National Poetry Press, at the request of many teachers and librarians is about to publish in one bound volume “Voices of America” the best of poems published in more than 250 annual regional anthologies of poetry during the last five years.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Boots are parents of a son born Monday, March 22 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
One hundred and fifty relatives a friends attended open house honoring Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Cave on their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday, March 21 at the Marcus Municipal Building.
Iowa pheasant hunters harvested an estimated 1,770,000 ringnecks during the 58 day season survey figures released by the State Conservation Commission. Commission biologists indicated that approximately 70% of the available roosters were bagged.

A fire of unknown origin broke out at the Peterson Construction Company carpenter shop on Main Street early Monday morning doing considerable damage to the floor, walls and ceiling and to some power tools before being extinguished.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Dorr were honored at a 50th wedding anniversary surprise Sunday evening March 15.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Johnson are parents of a son born Wed., Mar.11.
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Davis were pleasantly surprised with a party Sunday at their home on their 25th wedding anniversary.

The Marcus Jaycees will be selling honey and strawberry preserves for the benefit of the mentally challenged.
Dale Brady, son of Mr. & Mrs. Leo Brady, Ronald Schnoes and Ronald Delaney, son of Mr. & Mrs. Max Delaney, have all been accepted for enrollment at NIUS in Sheldon.
Mrs. Eleanor Brady returned home Saturday from a six week vacation to California and Colorado.
The Marcus Eagles closed out their basketball season with 12 wins and 9 losses. They were sectional champs and runner-up at district.

Mr. Emil Johnson, the brother of Mrs. Kenmar Jordahl passed away on March 14 in LeMars at the age of 72 following an extended illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Brady of Mason City, are parents of a baby boy born March 12.
Sand Seed Service, Inc. of Marcus was recognized at an award banquet held recently in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The firm was cited by Kent Feeds, Inc. for outstanding sales and service during 1979.
The Marcus Eagles in their first trip to state competition were defeated by a taller an dwell trained Tripoli team in a well attended game Tuesday afternoon, March 18.
Kevin Alesch, 18 son of Mr. & Mrs. James Alesch, RR1, Marcus, enlisted in the Air Force on February 4.
