105 Years Ago -1920
Mr. & Mrs. Humphrey Means of Akron, Ohio came Monday and will help their brother Jacob Means operate the W.W. Bass farm.
Miss Lizzie O’Connell’s millinery business will be carried on during her absence from Marcus by Mrs. Will Garvin and Mrs. Ed Keleher. The shop will be in readiness by Saturday when they will offer at big reduction her entire winter stock.
Percy King will leave for Sioux City Saturday to help as auctioneer at a hog sale. He will return home Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. George Rabel, who have been visiting this winter with her parents in Dubuque County, arrived Monday and will help the Fred Hohbach’s this season.
100 Years Ago – 1925
The wolf hunters of Marcus captured the only wolf caught in the wolf hunt staged by the Farm Bureau of Hawarden Wednesday in which more than 200 men participated. The quartet consisted of O.E. Shoemaker, Homer Weimer, Leonard Treinen, and Horace Snyder. The local sportsman have learned the tricks of the wolf in former hunts this season, having captured four animals in this locality.
Miss Athela Jenkens and Jack Meylor were awarded the loving cup given at the dance at the Japanese Gardens Monday evening for being the best dancers present.
Miss Margaret Schmillen entertained a group of young folks at her home Tuesday evening in honor of Miss Vera Van Wechel, whose birthday occurred that day.
F.G. Meinert, 63 of Remsen and father of Mrs. Ray Nieman of Marcus passed away at this home Saturday, March 7 after a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Owen Brooks were the victims of a farewell surprise party when about 25 neighbors and friends gathered in their home Saturday evening.

Ronald Satterlee, proprietor pf the Satterlee Funeral Home has completed moving into the new location known as the F.J. Edmonds residence.
Miss Katherine Aten, a former resident of Marcus, died February 29 at Long Beach, California.
Francis Hickery of Persia, Iowa purchased last week the Charles Lee Tavern. Mr. Hickery took possession Monday, March 4.
Quincy Bosworth, 85 died suddenly at his home at Estetine, South Dakota Tuesday night. Mr. Bosworth is a brother of Mrs. Hattie Wilson of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Ira Bulyer were given a pleasant farewell surprise Saturday evening when about 18 friends gathered at their home for a party prior to their leaving for Peterson, Iowa where they are making their home on a farm.
The senior class of the public school enjoyed a theatre party at the American theatre in Cherokee Saturday evening. After the picture, the group enjoyed lunch.

O.J. Strampe’s 1935 Ford Sedan was stolen from his garage Tuesday night and was found Wednesday evening near the Fred Deichmann Farm.

Ben Enneking, who has been Day Marshall in Marcus for the past seven years, has resigned his position which became effective March 1. Mr. Enneking is succeeded by Roy Bork.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Roethler are the parents of a daughter born to them at their home February 28.
Mr. & Mrs. Harvey White were pleasantly surprised at their home on Saturday evening when relatives and friends came to honor them on their tenth wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Alice Thompson was honored Sunday, March 4 when relatives came with a covered dish dinner. The happy occasion honored Mrs. Thompson on her 89th birthday.
The Tilden Farm Breau ladies met at the home of Mrs. John Huline with Mrs. Lois Hughes leading a topic discussion “Refinishing and Care of Furniture.”
Mr. & Mrs. L.P. Fitzgerlad are the parents of a son born Monday, February 5.
Mr. & Mrs. Humprey Means are the parents of a son born Sunday morning February 4.
Poastmaster John Delaney reported a total of $128.20 has been recevied towards the Infantile Paralysis drive.
The Marcus basketball team won the consolation prize in the annual tournament which was held in Cherokee.
75 Years Ago -1950
Fire completely destroyed the Lone Eagle Filling Station a mile south of Marcus on Tuesday afternoon in the midst of the raging blizzard. The Marcus fire department was called and in spite of visibility of near zero, managed to reach the station. However, the fire had gained such a start combined with weather conditions that little could be done to thwart it.
Mrs. Ann Oteila Stark, 70, passed away in the LeMars hospital Tuesday afternoon March 7.
Mrs. Perry Miller received word this week of the death of Mrs. C.W. Roe of Clemont, Florida, a former resident of Marcus. She passed away very unexpectedly on Thursday, March 2
The sale of Wagner’s Cash Store in Marcus was announced Thursday afternoon. New owner is John McKernan of Chicago and immediate possession was given.
An unscheduled family reunion was enjoyed recently in the Merle Weicht home when their sons in the service surprised them by arriving unannounced.
Bud Nagle of Nagle Chevrolet expects to have the first model of the new Power Glide-driven Chevrolet here Saturday. This model is the first low priced car to boast automatic transmission and has created quite a stir in the automotive world.
Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Means are the parents of a son born Monday, February 8 in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.

About 50 friends and relatives helped Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Barnes celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary at the Municipal hall Saturday evening February 26.
Open house honoring Mrs. Charles Quirin on her 75th birthday will be held at her home Thursday, March 7.
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Grauer of Waynesville, Missouri are the parents of a daughter born Monday, March 7.
Fred Mossman has taken over the management of the Pilley Cream Station here located just north of American Legion Hall.
Funeral services for Axel Sjostrom, who died at Pipestone, Minnesota Tuesday following a long illness, were held Friday in the Paula Funeral Home at Worthington, Minnesota.
Curtis Risk has accepted a postition as commercial teacher at the Marcus public school, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Mrs. Kenneth Meehan.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Petersen and LeMayne were honored at a farewell dinner Sunday in the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Schmillen.
Chris Flanagan, 85, fell and broke his hip Tuesday evening in his home.

Alfred Brandt, 71 passed away Wednesday, March 3 at Hartley following a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. George French of Cleghorn will observe their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, March 14 with open house from 2-5 PM in the afternoon in the Presbyterian church parlors.
Mr. & Mrs. Larry Holmes are the parents of a son born Thursday, February 25 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Marcus.
Clarence Geibe, 77 and former resident of Marcus, passed away last week at Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Geibe died following heart surgery at the Veterans Hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Cave will hold an open house in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary at the Marcus Municipal Building on Sunday, March 21.

Nine out of twenty students entered in the district speech concert at Remsen St. Marys high school on Saturday earned I ratings. They will now compete in the state contest at Sac City on March 22. The students are Kirk Baumgardner, Karen Kuehn, Virginia Lynn, Connie Mead, Janet Means, Jeanette Earnest, Patty Nielsen, Barb Bindner and Marcis Steffen,
William Newstrom, 81 and former Marcus resident, passed away February 26 at Lompoe, California.
Raymond Goebel, 65 of Marcus passed away March 3 in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
On Sunday afternoon February 22, 30 relatives and friends gathered at the Grace Methodist Church in Marcus to congratulate Mr. & Mrs. Donald Simons on their 40th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Geringer of Black Earth, Wisconsin are the parents of a son born Saturday, February 28.

Bette Nelson was the recent winner of the county Legion speaking contest, “The Constitution”. Bette went on to qualify for state speech association contest in original oratory. Bette’s speech, “The Preamble” earned her $25 savings bond from the Legion.
Mr. & Mrs. Brad Coburn are happy to announce the arrival of a daughter born February 25 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe George hosted a dinner at Gus’ Steak House in Cherokee Friday evening honoring Mr. & Mrs. Melvyn Greene on their 35th wedding anniversary.
In the third overtime, the Marcus Eagles defeated a tough Aurelia Bulldog team in the final round of sectionals by the score of 53-50 last Thursday night. This is the first time that a Marcus boys team has won a boys sectional and advanced to districts.
Fran Galles, Mike Olson and Rick Lenox are the three wrestlers who qualified for district meet.

Mrs. Helen Rocene, the mother of Mrs. Earl Johnson, passed away February 27 at New Richard, Minnesota at the age of 90 years, 5 months.
Mrs. Louis Weber, 81 of Marcus died Sunday, March 2, after a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer and Mr. & Mrs. Walter Dorr will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries with a open house in their honor Saturday, March 15 in the fellowship hall of Peace Lutheran Church, Marcus.
