100 Years Ago – 1925
Mr. & Mrs. John Quinn have sold their acreage property near Sunset Hill to George Treinen who will take possession March 1.
After a separation of 47 years Mrs. M. Collins of this city was reunited with her sister, Mrs. Margaret McRae arrived last week to visit her sister who is confined to her bed.
The marrage of Mary Oroha Loraditch of Leeds and Maurice Heely of Marcus was solemnized a the Catholic Church in Leeds Wednesday morning.
95 Years Ago -1930
Friends have been notified of the death of John Ziegler, 79 for many years a resident of Marcus who died at Mechanisburg, Pennsylvania, March 10. He left Marcus only two years ago.
A program and basket social will be given at the Simons school Friday evening. Ruth Ritchie is the teacher.
Contracts for the erection of six new one-room schoolhouses in Marcus township were let at a hearing on Monday morning.
Merrill, with its numerous bachelors has little on Washta in Cherokee, County. According to late reports of the census enumerators, Washta has 23 bachelors and 29 widowers and only a total population of 450. There are 37 widows in town.
90 Years Ago -1935
Loren Dorr, Lorraine Rae and Helen Metcalf represented Marcus in the county declamatory contest hld at Larrabee Wednesday evening. Loren placed first in the oratorical division with his oration “How Much Land Does A Man Need?” Lorraine received third place in the dramatic division third place in the dramatic division and Helen was awarded second place in the humorous division.
A petition bearing more than 200 signatures was presented at a regular meeting of the board of supervisors in the courthouse by 20 men who are interested in the improvement of the Washta-Cleghorn road.
The honor roll for the fourth six weeks in Junior High is Erma Lee, Jake Dixson, Eleanor Reed, Jack Knox, Veryle Weicht, Edith Heinis and Jimmie Zangger.
Maratha Ann, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Hueser, went to her heavenly home March 6. She was born January 17 and died of bronchial pneumonia.
A cable message from Belfast, Ireland, was received Friday morning February 8, carring the sad news of the death of Mr. Hamilton was the father of Mrs. James Edgar of Marcus and John Hamilton of LeMars.
A father and son banquet will be held at the Methodist church.
85 Years Ago -1940
Quincyt Bosworth was born in Ohio February 25, 1888 and died March 6, at Estelline, South Dakota at the age of 85 years an d110 days after an illness of about 12 hours.
George Prunty will become head mechanic and shop foreman at the J.P. Ament garage March 18.
Mrs. Dave Anderson entertained a number of ladies at a quilting party Tuesday.
The soybeans and seed special train which was run over the Illinois Central Railroad from Monday until Saturday arrived in Marcus shortly after 12 Tuesday and remained until 2.
Over 350,000 bushels of corn has been sealed in Marcus an dAMherst townships, the News learned today from Fred Mossman who is the official sealer for those townships. This accounts for government loans of $199,500 on the sealed corn. In Cherokee County over 2,000,000 bushels of corn has been sealed on which over $1,190,000 has been borrowed.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. Jay Peters, Pvt. Jerry Peters and Rae Peters spent Tuesday in Crofton, Nebraska at the Ed Nicholas home. The occasion honored Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Award of the Bronze Star Medal by direction of the President, under provisions of Executive Order No. 9419 is awarded to Sgt. Benjamin Radcliffe, Field Artillery, United States Army, for meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy during the period of January 31 – December 31.
Mrs. Floyd Knox was officially notified Wednesday morning by the Navy Department that her son James died of wounds following action.
36 votes were cast at the annual election of the Marcus Independent School District, Monday March 12 at the Municipal Building, Dr. G.R. Hobson and Melvin Dorr were elected as directors for three years terms.
Cpl. Lorne Sand left Wednesday after spending a month’s furlough at the John Sand home with his mother, Mrs. John Sand at Rochester who is a patient there.
75 Years Ago -1950
The election of the Marcus Independent school district went off very quietly Monday. There were no contest on the ballot and no dark horses appeared. A total of only 87 votes were cast. George Scott received 86 votes for director and Mrs. W.L. Gund received 81 votes as treasurer.
The Town of Marcus is eligible for city mail delivery, according to the best information available. The only requirement that might keep the town from securing the service is that of population and while no figures are available it is believed that Marcus has reached the necessary 1500.
Prayer service were held this afternoon for James Matthew Ryan, month old son of Mr. & Mrs. Emmett Ryan, who passed away on Wednesday, March 25.
A group of friends and neighbors gathered in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Cave Tuesday evening to do honor to the couple on their 10th wedding anniversary.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Peterson announce the arrival of a daughter born Sunday, March 13 in Sacred heart Hospital in LeMars.
A committee from Mrs. Hattie Grauer’s Sunday school class sponsored a birthday party for her Tuesday at the home of Rev. and Mrs. E.J. Plummer.
Mark Meehan of Marcus was winner of the Cherokee County five acre DeKalb corn growing contest with Vern Donner also of Marcus, the runner up.
The Marcus Rotary Club elected five directors at its Tuesday noon luncheon. Elected were Clarence Beck, the Mutual Insurance Association, Wendall Grauer, radio and television dealer, Glenn Miller, Nelson Funeral Home, Harold Stienjes of Farmers Cooperative Elevator manager and John Clarkson, grocer.
Ray Gates was elected to the post of fire chief of the annual election of officers of the Marcus Fire department last Friday night.
Mark Bancroft, Marcus attorney, was re-elected to the board of directors of the Marcus independent school district Monday in an election which set a number of local records.

A daughter born February 8, arrived at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Polson on Monday, March 4.
Mr. & Mrs. William Ament were pleasantly surprised Sunday evening when a group of friends arrived at their home to honor them at a housewarming party.
The children of Mr. & Mrs. Bert Nielsen of Cleghorn entertained their parents at a luncheon in their home in honor of their 40the wedding anniversary.
Open house will be held Sunday afternoon March 20 at the Marcus Municipal Building honoring Mr. & Mrs. Roy Bork on their 25th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. William Roethler of Marcus recently observed their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house in their home.
Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Ebert are the parents of a son born Thursday, March 10 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
60 Years Ago -1965
Doug Nestor, son of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Nester, was named to the Dean’s list at South Dakota Stae for the first semester. Doug is taking electrical engineering.
McKernen’s Store in Marcus is celebrating it’s 15th year here with an anniversary sale this Thursday – Saturday and it appears to be another special event that is likely to become a victim of the ST. Patrick’s Day Blizzard of 1965.
Harold’s Rexall Drugs of Marcus now has a completely new interior and is announcing a grand opening for Friday and Saturday.
Ed Delaney of Marcus has accepted the Motorola dealership for Marcus and will operate from his home a block east of Robbie’s Texaco Station. Motorola makes television and radio sets as well as related appliances.
Mrs. Charles Pingel 73, a resident of Paullina for the past ten years, died Tuesday, March 9 at the Primghar hospital.
55 Years Ago -1970
Robert Porter Sr., 90, a resident of this community for 80 years, passed away Saturday March 7 at a LeMars hospital.
Martin Carndell, the Marcus band director, will guest soloist for the Esterville Community high school band concert there. Mr. Crandell will be playing such tunes as “Body and Soul”, “The Shadow of your Smile” and “Rawk”.
Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Pick of Remsen became the parents of a son born Thursday, March 5.
Dr. Luke Norris, 85, a retired Marcus dentist, passed away at a LeMars hospital on Sunday, March 8.
50 Years Ago -1975
Guests gathered in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Wendell Grauer honoring Henry Dorr Jr. on his 84th birthday on Monday evening, March 3.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Meylor hosted a dinner in their home on Sunday, March 9 honoring the birthday of Mrs. Amanda Meylor.
Tim Ludwig, 14 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Kenny Ludwig, suffered a broken arm last Monday afternoon while engaged in play at school.
The Marcus Eagles were defeated by a tall Alta team Saturday night in the finals of the district tournament 63-50.
Mrs. Josephine Alesch of the Marcus Garden Club will present the program “Culture of Rhubarb and Asparagus” for the Garden Club of the Air on March 14. The program will be aired on KCHE Radio.
45 Years Ago – 1980
The Marcus Eagles bought their ticket to the Class 1A Boys State Basketball tournament Monday night with a convincing 65 – 53 victory over the Pocahontas Indians. The Eagles will open up the state tourney on Tuesday, March 18 hen they face Tripoli at the Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines.
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Ohlendorf of Remsen announce the arrival of a daughter born Friday, March 7.
Randy Kaufmann and Kenny Hohbach, both of Marcus, participated in the Land O’Lakes Annual Meeting Young Farmer Program held February 26-29 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Barbara Hohbach had the privilege to accompany Dr. Frances Heusinkveld of Buena Vista College to the University of Iowa to attend an organ workshop March 6 to 8.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Stowater of Marcus are the parents of their first child, a son, born March 5.
