105 Years Ago -1920
Unable to secure at present a building to house his hardware stock, G.S. Tutt who suffered a fire loss last week is forced to close out his entire stock of goods at a greater sacrifice.
Forrest Collier has resigned his position with Swift’s Packing Company in Sioux City an dwill go on a farm with his parents March 1.
Peters Brothers automobile dealers are having a steak of bad luck. Jay Peters Jr. partner of the firm, returned only this week from a Sioux City hospital where he recovered from a surgical operation. Ray Peters, senior member, was recovering from a very serious illness with influenza when he was attacked with small pox.
Never in the history of Marcus was there such a shortage of houses as there now is. This condition not only exists here, but in many places. Buildings were largely held up during the war and last year saw very little building in this locality for many figured that material would lower in price.
100 Years Ago – 1925
At the sub-district declamatory contest in Aurelia last Thursday, James Nield won first in oratorical and Louene Birch first in humorous. Ruth Wixcel carried off second honors in the dramatic class.
Father Flanagan’s boys of Omaha appeared here Tuesday night at the opera house and drew a large and appreciative audience. The boys put on a fine show and were well rewarded by liberal donations.
At a recent meeting of the City Council, Ambros Heines was appointed Marshall to succeed J.R. Altizer.
J.C. Smith and family left Marcus Monday for Sioux City where they will locate. Mr. Smith conducted a bakery here until last fall. The house they occupied has been rented by F.E. Rubbert who will move from the farm to town.
90 Years Ago -1935
The Marcus Tourist Club celebrated its 23rd anniversary Wednesday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Carl Reed with Mrs. Floyd Hamilton as assistant hostess. Mrs. Gertrude Loomis, the only charter member had charge of the program.
Mr. & Mrs. Adam Grauer entertained relatives at a dinner Wednesday evening. The occasion was their 46th wedding anniversary.
R.L. Meyer and family, who have been residing on a 40 acres farm a mile north of Marcus for the past few years, will move here this week having rented a house on the west part of town.
The Marcus township farmers who have signed up for the 1935 corn-hog contracts met at the Lyric Theatre in Marcus Monday afternoon to elect officers and a committee to conduct the 1935 administration in this township.
A new Gamble Agency Store owned and operated by Lyle Huiser will open in Marcus Saturday, February 23. The new store is located in the IOOF building at the north part of Main Street.
Funeral service for Mrs. Alice French, former Marcus resident for many year and prominent church worker were held in the Methodist church Monday with the Rev. A.J. Quirin in charge,
85 Years Ago -1940
As a courtesy to Mrs. Alice Thompson about 33 friends and relatives gathered at her home at noon Thursday, February 22 with well filled baskets to enjoy and celebrate with her on her 84th birthday anniversary.
A daughter was born Wednesday to Mr. & Mrs. Cy Burnstorm.
Mrs. Emma Dockendorf died this morning at the home of her daughter Mrs. Carl Reed. Mrs. Dockendorf was born May 5, 1870 and was therefore 69 years, 9 months and 23 days old. Her death was due to heart trouble.
Succumbing to the weight of years Edward Carley, 95 retired farmer died at his home in LeMars. Mr. Carley was the father of Frank Carley of Marcus.
A well filled auditorium at the public school was well entertained Tuesday night by 3 one act plays presented under the direction of Miss Edith Qualheim, english instructor in the high school. The 7th grade held the attention of the audience with a mystery play “The Devil Stone”. The other plays were “Mrs. Pat and the Law” and “The Pampered Darling”.
Dr. and Mrs. G.R. Hobson have moved into the north side of the Rae Apartments and Mr. & Mrs. Cy Brownmiller have moved into the south side.
St. John’s Lutheran Church in Germantown was the scene of a beautiful wedding January 14, when Viola Pauling and Harold Puhrmann were united in marriage.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Friday evening February 16, Mr. & Mrs. Bert Tower and family of Marcus township were pleasantly surprised at the Municipal building when their neighbors and friends called to bid them farewell. The Trower family is moving to a farm north of Primghar soon.
Mrs. Mary Gingrich was surprised Sunday afternoon when friends called at her home honoring her on her 92nd birthday.
Funeral services for Floyd Barnes were held Wednesday at the Chapel of the Crosby Meyer Funeral home in Omaha.
Completing over eight missions as tail gunner on a B-26 Marauder medium bomber has won the Air Medal for Sgt. Lyle Heinis of Marcus.
Monday evening, February 26, the Eagles met the Marcus High School Alumni in the high school gymnasium. The Alumni proved to be a bit rusty as the Eagles came out victors with the score ending 32-23. Stowater led the Alumni team with 12 points also Witter, Nelson, Peavy, Miller and Leavitt made up the Alumni team.
75 Years Ago -1950
Mrs. Ben Ohlendorf entertained a group of ladies Thursday in her home. The occasion was a social get together of eight old classmates and their teacher of 51 years ago at Tilden No. 2 school.
As sometimes happens to the best of newspapers, the News missed an important story last week. An airplane crashed on the local football field Monday and was nearly demolished although the pilot, Wendall Grauer escaped without injury.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Johnson observed their 51st wedding anniversary Wednesday, February 22.
A large group of friends and neighbors gathered in the Municipal building Sunday evening, February 26 to honor Mr. & Mrs. Carl Deiner and Charles at a farewell party.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Meylor were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary Thursday, February 23 when their entire family was present to help celebrate.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Schorg, long time residents of Plymouth County observed their golden wedding anniversary Wednesday, February 23 by holding open house in the afternoon and evening for about 175 relatives and friends.
Linda Nelson of Marcus will be one of the 32 entrants in the Iowa Free Throw Contest which is a feature of the girl’s state basketball tournament underway in Des Moines this week.
An open house honoring Mr. & Mrs. George French of Cleghorn on their 40th wedding anniversary will be held at their home Thursday, March 10.
A farewell party was held Wednesday evening in honor of Mr. & Mrs. C.D. McIntire who are leaving soon for their new home in Spirit Lake.
Funeral services, for Paul LaPage, 57 of Des Moines,were held from the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee Monday and burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery there. He died February 24 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, following a heart attack.

The Wagler Motor Company, the new Marcus Ford Dealer, will hold an open house next Thursday. The firm is the successor to DeVries Motor Company, the Wagler brothers having recently purchased the dealership from DeVries.
Mr. & Mrs. Ben Snyder were guest at a reception and anniversary party honoring them on their 62nd wedding anniversary Sunday, February 21 at Sanborn.
Annette Dorr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Dorr of Marcus received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Iowa State University on February 27.
Mrs. Delius Anderson, 81 and former Marcus resident, passed away at her home in Lake Benton, Minnesota Monday morning February 22 following a heart attack.
Mr. & Mrs. D.D. Wightmanof Boone are the parents of a daughter born Friday, February 19.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Cronin entertained at dinner Monday evening honoring their parents Mr. & Mrs. James Cronin on their 44th anniversary.

Mrs. Leslie Davis, 69 of Marcus died Thursday afternoon, February 25in Cherokee after a five year illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Saner of Cherokee are the proud parents of twin boys born Wednesday, February 24.
Mrs. Mary Colling, 79, died Wednesday at the home of a daughter in Remsen.
Jane Berglund, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Berglund, has been named the 1965 Homemaker of Tomorrow from the Marcus Community School.
Norman Sawin, who has been superintendent of the Tri-Center Community Schools at Neola, has accepted a similar position with the Marcus Community Schools and will take over his new duties at the end of the present school year. Duane Little resigned the position because of health reasons several weeks ago.

An open house reception in honor of Mr. & Mrs. George Gottsche Sr., will be held Sunday, March 1 at the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church parlors
Rose Ann Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Miller was presented her nurse’s cap by Miss Gladys Holm, school director of St. Luke’s School of Nursing.
Mr. & Mrs. Kim Sand of Iowa Falls are the parents of their first child, a son born Tuesday, February 24.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Addy of Omaha hosted a dinner Saturday evening at the Waeside in LeMars in honor of the 31st wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Addy.
Funeral services for Evelyn Irene Hoger were held Tuesday February 17 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She passed away Saturday, February 14 after a lingering illness at the age of 52 years and 11 days.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Bergeman of Mapleton, Minnesota are the parents of a daughter born Saturday, February 21.

Martin Miler passed away suddenly February 19 having reached the age of 77 years 10 months and 17 days.
Mr. & Mrs. Steven Colvert of Cherokee are the proud parents of a baby girl born Thursday, February 20 in Sioux Valley Hospital.
Three Marcus High school girls received superior I rating at the Orange City State Piano contest on Saturday, February 15. They were Marilyn Ferrin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Ferrin, Joyce Treinen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Treinen and Cindy Dorr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Dorr.
Marcus Lumber Company celebrates their 55th anniversary by having an open house and anniversary sale. A color television set and a 9×12 Santa Cruz linoleum are just two of the many prizes that will be given away. The event is scheduled for this Friday, February 26.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Lundquist of Paullina are the parents of a daughter born February 17 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee.

Franz Braun, 74 of Remsen died Monday, February 25 in Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a sudden illness.
Burton Lundell, 62, and owner of Lundell’s Department Store in Paullina and Hi-Fashion Fabrics, Cherokee, died Saturday at his home here.
Douglas and Joyce McIntosh of Crystal, Minnesota are proud parents of a son born February 5.
Howard Johnston, 69, of Marcus, died suddenly Sunday morning.
Donald and Martha Simons were honored at an open house for their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 17 at Grace United Methodist Church.
Phil and Margie Schroeder of Remsen wish to announce the birth of their baby daughter born on Tuesday February 12 at Floyd Valley Hospital.
