Obituary – Gary McClintock
Gary McClintock, 85, of Independence, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa.
Gary was born on August 12, 1939, in Marcus, Iowa, the son of Michael and Minnie McClintock. He graduated from Holy Name High School in Marcus, Iowa and then went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Loras College in Dubuque, followed by and his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law.
On October 5, 1968, Gary was united in marriage to Sandra Wasson in Perry, Iowa. The couple initially resided in Lowden, Iowa before moving to Independence in 1975 when Gary joined the law firm of Grief and Klozbach, which later became Hoeger and McClintock. He practiced law until his retirement in 2019. A talented lawyer, Gary left a meaningful imprint on Iowa jurisprudence, representing hundreds of clients and arguing nine cases before the Iowa Court of Appeals. The Volunteer Lawyers Project recognized Gary for his volunteer work on behalf of those in need who could not afford an attorney. Even after retiring, Gary enjoyed visiting the office to connect with former clients, colleagues, and friends.
Gary cared deeply about the community of Independence. He helped raise funds to build the Independence Library. Gary was also a member of the Iowa Bar Association, the Buchanan County Bar Association, the Independence Library Board, and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid reader and always looked forward to reading the newest book or staying updated by reading the daily newspaper. An enthusiastic sports fan, Gary was especially devoted to the Iowa Hawkeyes and relished attending their football and basketball games whenever possible.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra McClintock, of Independence; two children, Robb (Jennifer) McClintock of Perry, Iowa, and Anne (Damien) Meyer of Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildren, Nicholas and Nile McClintock, Sierra Stratton (Frank Opoku-Brenyah), and Hannah and Isaac Meyer; one great-grandchild, Virginia Brenyah; two brothers Paul (Denise) of Dover, Minnesota, and Mick McClintock of Urbandale and two nephews, Michael (Deb Pitman-McClintock) McClintock and Mark (Deb) McClintock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 AM on Monday, November 4, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Very Rev. David Beckman officiating with a luncheon to follow. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2 until 5 PM on Sunday, November 3rd, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. A Knights of Columbus Rosary said at 1:45 PM.
Gary received compassionate care from the Buchanan County Health Center. Their support of Gary and family during his final days was deeply meaningful. Cedar Valley Hospice also provided valuable assistance during this time for which his family is grateful.
Gary’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of ABCM Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care they provided over the last year.
