Joseph George departed Sunday evening for Buffalo, New York where he will ente rcollege to complete his course in pharmacy.
A wave of prosperity and development has struck Cleghorn and it is noticeable to all visitors. Two handsome new buildings are being erected.
95 Years Ago -1929
Mrs. John Holmes and Mrs. Harry Neir will act as hostesses to the Foreign Missionary Society on Friday at the John Holmes home.
The Junior “M” Club play “Smile Rodney, Smile” will be held in the high school auditorium. Friday evening November 22. The juniors are giving this play to raise money for the Junior Senior banquet.
C.H. Rawlins, resident and businessman here until two weeks ago, died suddenly at his home in Pocahontas last Tuesday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Simons are the parents of a son born Thursday, October 31 at their home.
Plymouth County supervisors are battling over the proposal to employ a tax ferret. Members are divided with Gustave Alesch, chairman, leading the battle for hiring the ferret.
Thieves broke into the Marcus Coop Company last Sunday night and escaped with a hundred dollars worth of merchandise. The robbery was discovered when the store was opened on Monday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. E.N. Wells celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary at their home last Sunday.
The window display at L. Seeger’s store seems to attract more attention than any other in town. Mr. Seeger has placed a miniature town in his window which runs a passenger train propelled by electricity.
The pasture of the Melberg farm west of Marcus resembled the wild and wooly west Tuesday when a pair of real wild west cowboys were imported to capture a wild steer belonging to Frank Swart.
Carl Benson, who has been visiting relatives in Laholm, Sweden for the past 19 months, arrived in Marcus Tuesday.
The market report; Hogs $8.50; corn 96 cents; oats 38 cents; cream 32 cents; butter 32 cents; hens 17 cents and springs 17 cents.

John Sand left by plane from Omaha Tuesday for Los Angeles, CA where hw eas called by the serious illness of his father, Frank Sand.
Marcella Neuroth of Granville, died at the home of her father, Nick Neuroth, The deceased is survived by her father and three sisters, Mrs. Ray Walsh, Mrs. Ray Muehl and Mrs. C.I. Hegeman.
Jack Popken has made what is an unusual record husking corn on the Harold Dorr farm north of Cleghorn. Last Friday he husked 75 bushels in 4 hours an d40 minutes. In ten days he husked 1351 bushels. The corn yielded about 90 bushels per acres.
Wilmer Schmillen entertained a large group of friends at a party Saturday evening in observance of his birthday.
Saturday, Iowa will meet Notre Dame in the Iowa stadium for the first time in 18 years. Iowans have waited a long time for this game and a large group from Marcus will be present to watch them play.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Pvt. Don Loomis, son of Mrs. Marie Lomis of Omaha, NE and grandson of Mr. & Mrs. L.M. Miller recently received the Purple Heart for wounds received in both hands while in combat in Germany.
Melvin Quamen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Louie Quamen, received inhuries on his leg Friday when his overalls caught in the power take off of a corn picker which was operating on the Quamen farm.
Grandma Gingrich was honored at a party at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr. & Mrs. Albert Eslsner. A lunch was brought and served by the guests.
Jean Jelly, Army nurse Corps. Has been promoted from second to first lieutenant her parents Mr. & Mrs. J.E. Kelly of Sioux City have learned.
Marcus will play their last football game of the season Armistice Saturday, November 11 at the Marcus Playground started at two o’clock. The game which is an annual affair between Marcus and Cleghorn on Armistice day is played alternately in Marcus and Cleghorn.

Emmet Doherty, 55, and long time resident of Marcus, passed away Saturday morning at the Aman Nursing home in Cherokee after a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Orville Rohlfsen of Marcus were among the seventy relatives that helped his grandfather, Hans Rohlfsen of Sibley celebrate his 103rd birthday Monday of this week.
The house of the Stewart Brothers farm seven miles south of Cleghorn was badly damaged by fire early Tuesday. The blaze broke out under the roof and burned a hole in the roof before it could be controlled.
Earl Rae, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Rae of Marcus, was recently pledged to Delta Phi Delta honoary art fraternity at Drake University in Des Moines.
The Rev. C.C. Callahan pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus was seriously injured in a highway crash a half mile south of Harcourt, shortly before noon Monday. John Schill, 68, Harcourt mall carrier lost his life in the accident. Each driver was alone in his car.

Reinhart Olson, 82, passed away early last Friday following a brief illness.
Mrs. Thora Anderson, 86, of Paullina, a former resident of Marcus. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon in the Oakdale Free Church, 6 miles north of Meriden.
Open house celebrating 35th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. H.H. Petrick will be held Sunday, November 14 in their home at Cleghorn.
Mrs. John Delaney, 76 of Marcus, passed away at her home Friday evening November 5 following a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Butch Rabel of Granville are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, November 4 in Sacred Heart hospital at LeMars.
Holy Name’s basketball team opened its season last Friday evening dropping a thriller to Danbury Catholic. The visitiors won the game with a field goal scored in the last three seconds breaking a 58-58 tie.

Mary Ellen Kelly, Marcus author, traveler and lecturer, will be honored at a community birthday and autographing party next Monday afternoon November 16 in the Municipal Building.
Word has been received of the death of Carl Zangger, 64 of Altadena, CA a former Marcus resident who passed away Monday night.
Four Marcus Eagles were named to the Maple Valley all conference team at a meeting of the organization Tuesday evening. A fifth Eagle was named on the second team. Winning first team honors were Vern Johnson, tackle; Barry Grauer, guard; Marlin Weicht, halfback; and Dave Klingborg, center. Placed on the second team was norm Rasmussen, at end.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Fischer are the parents of a daughter born Friday, November 6 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.

Mr. & Mrs. Walter Nafziger of Cleghorn will observe their 40th wedding anniversary Saturday, November 7 with an open house at their home.
Gladys Louise Dirks, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Dirks of Colo, Iowa was born August 31 at LeMars and passed away October 31 at the age of eight weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Boyd Kolb of Cleghorn will hold open house in observance of their silver anniversary on Sunday, November 8.
Mr, & Mrs, Bradlee Anderson of Denver, Colorado are the parents of a son born Saturday, November 8.
The Marcus Eagles undefeated at this writing and with but one more game to play this Wednesday evening will be honored are the members of the last undefeated Marcus football team that of the year 1936.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Letsche are the parents of a son born Tuesday, October 27.

Michael Bird passed away Monday, November 3 at Medlia, Minnesota.
Dr. Alice Delaney, 82, passed away Friday at Omaha. Miss Delaney was a chiropractor, practicing in Marcus in the 1930’s.
Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Kosse became the parents of a son born Tuesday, October 7 at Floyd Valley Hospital.
Mrs. Elmer Douvia was surprised by a group of ladies Friday evening of last week at a party in honor of her birthday.
The Liberty Bells 4H clubs girls and their leaders, Mrs. Vernon Skaggs and Mrs. Leo Heinen, hosted a Halloween party for senior citizens Wednesday afternoon in the Cleghorn shelter house.

Brian Gates and David Hogue are members of the Northwestern College Red Raider football squad. The Red Raiders who last year were NAIA National Champions Division II, are ranked ninth this year.
Mr. & Mrs. Phillip Schroeder of Remsen announce the birth of a daughter on October 8 at Floyd Valley Hospital.
The Meadow Star United Methodist Church of rural Washta will celebrate its 20th anniversary Sunday, November 3 with special events which are open to the public.
Cherokee County Mini Bus Inc. is now a reality. Beginning Monday, November 4 and each Monday thereafter the bus will pick up an Senior Citizen and also any handicapped person. Passengers will be picked up and delivered at their homes.
Joann Lee Lehnhoff, 19, died on October 26 in an automobile accident four miles north of Cherokee.
Mrs. Joe Alesch Sr was honored on her 85th birthday Sunday, October 27 when members of her family brought dinner and spent the day visiting.

Kristi Peterson won the District Soil Conservation Speech Contest in Cherokee on October 23. Chuck Ferrin received second place.
The Grand Opening and remodeling sale of Nagle’s Apparel under the new ownership of Greg and Gloria Geerdes will be held this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 1-3.
Mike Benton, son of Mr. & Mrs. Keith Benton, bagged a large cow elk with a now and arrow while hunting near a ranch where he works at Bond, Colorado.
Dr. & Mrs. Ray Drefke are the parents of a son born on October 27.
Vernon Bunkers, 54 of rural Remsen, died from electrocution Saturday morning in an accident at his home.
