105 Years Ago -1919
Max Herbert and Barney Bird returned home this week from service overseas. The boys landed in the United Sates October 6 and made a record getting their discharge.
Mr. & Mrs. George Tutt are now occupying their new home, having moved in Wednesday. The home has added greatly to Oak Street.
The little son of Mr. & Mrs. Bert Boss is ill at the Gurley home. A trained nurse is in attendance.
One of the most entertaining features of the homecoming day celebration was the airplane exhibitions by aviator Nelson of Cherokee. Those who took rides in the plan were Miss Marjorie McLain, Laurence Riley, Silas Means, E. Simons, E.B. Rae, W.W. Bass. L.D. Simons. A.E. Ramsey, Vivian Harvey, Elin Meylor and Vernance Sylvester.100 Years Ago – 1924
Carol Benson, who has been visiting relatives in Laholm, Sweden for the past 19 months, arrived in Marcus on Tuesday.
Wally Clarkson is quite the town hero since he thwart plans of an attempted robbery here Friday night. Mr. Clarkson happened to go to the office of Edmonds Londergan Company near the tracks about 9 p.m. and upon entering saw a figure of a man stooping in front of the safe. A royal battle ensued and Clarkson attempted to find the marshal to place the man under arrest. Not finding him, he returned him lose but not until he had forced him to tell his name.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Joseph Raw, a former resident of Marcus, were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon with Rev. A.J. Barkley officiating.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr announce the birth of a daughter born Tuesday, October 14.
95 Years Ago -1929
The Marcus football team lost a heart breaking game to Aurelia Friday night when that team won their homecoming game with a 12-0 score.
Extensive improvements of various kinds are being made on the John Bindner farm south of Marcus. Mr. Bindner has just completed the construction of a cattle bunk and will build a hog house, two feeding floors and a concrete water supply tank.
The Rainbow Theatre has a Family Night Wednesday nights when each family with children under 12 years of age will be admitted on one admission ticket.
On October 8, 40 years ago K.D. Bancroft began in the meat business and has continued it ever since.

Miss Dorothy Quirin has been chosen to sing in the Women’s Glee Club at Iowa State Teachers College.
Natural gas is expected in Marcus before winter sets in according to Herman Kacr of Sioux City.
Bob Kelley received word Wednesday of his appointment as assistant to the Educational Supervisor at Cherokee CCC Camp.
Marcus High’s victory hungry gridders will be out after their first win of the season Friday when they tangle with Kingsley on the latter’s field.
Monday was an eventful day in the home of Mr. & Mrs. William Petrie. Not only did the pioneer Marcus couple observe their golden wedding anniversary, but Mr. Petroe celebrated his 77th birthday.
W.J. Carver, 69 and well known Cherokee county farmer, died from a heart attack while eating breakfast at his farm home three miles west of Washta early Friday morning.
Marcus new mattress factory, a branch of the home Comfort Mattress Company of Luverne, Minnesota began initial operation her Monday.

Mr. & Mrs. Lars Anderson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Wednesday, October 25.
Casey Boever, 52 former resident passed away Thursday, October 26 at a hospital in Minnesota.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Garvin are the parents of a son born to them at the Porath Hospital in Storm Lake on October 30.
Lon Grauer is employed at the Cooperative Oil Company. He is filling the vacancy left by Francis Treptow who has been inducted in to service.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Harold Walter on Friday, October 27 at Sacred Heart Hospital a son.
75 Years Ago -1949
The wash house on th eRoy Johnson farm six miles northeast of Marcus was destroyed by fire about seven o’clock Tuesday morning. The Marcus fire department was summoned to keep the flames from spreading. Lost with the building were dairy milk and washing equipment and some tools.
The Niemann Jewelry has on display this week an exhibit of diamonds demonstrating the various qualities of the precious stones.
Funeral service will be held for Mrs. William Petrie, 80 an old time former resident at the Nelson Funeral Home with the Rev. C.W. Samuelson officiating.
Death made another sudden and untimely call early Sunday morning when Orla Harder, 45 passed away at his farm home northeast of Marcus.
By the margin of two extra points, the Cleghorn Mustangs galloped to a 14 to 12 victory over the Marcus Eagles in the final game of the season for both teams Friday night. The game was the feature of Cleghorn’s homecoming.
70 Years Ago -1954
The Marcus Eagles lost their final game of the season last Friday night, easy victims of Hostein’s powerful Black Pirates. The game marked the finish of the Eagles second successive win less season.
Mrs. August Carlson, a resident of the Marcus community for 35 years died in a Sioux City hospital Monday morning having reached the age of 65 years, five months and nine days.
Harry Peckenschneider, 52 of Marcus, died in his sleep some time Sunday night. Mr. Peckenschneider, operator of the East Side Tavern here for the past four years, was widely acquainted here and over the county. He came to Marcus from a farm northeast of town.
The new concrete structure at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator began to creep out of the ground this week and at Thursday noon was approaching the 45 foot mark.
George Pierce, 60, of Cherokee died suddenly Wednesday evening o flast week as the result of a heart attack In the yards of the Cherokee Livestock Auction Company which he had operated for the past 25 years.

Carl Watcher, who comes here from Pierson has accepted a position as a mechanic with the Evan Implement Company.
Boots Wallin plans to start work as soon as the weather permits on a new building for his blacksmith shop. He has purchased a lot on Railroad Street south of the stockyards from Gus Hadel.
Herman Schorg, 80 who had lived on a farm about eight miles south of a farm about eight miles south of Remsen for many years, died at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Sunday after a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Reinholdt are the parents of a daughter born Friday, October 30 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mrs. Ab Anderson entertained at a birthday party Sunday evening October 27 honoring her father W.T. Williams of Primghar on his 75th birthday today.

Walter Garlow, 62, of Marcus passed away Monday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a short illness.
The Marcus Eagles assured themselves of a highly successful season last Friday evening when they won the War Eagle Conference crown with a 27 to 7 victory over highly rated LeMars Gehlen.

The Marcus business was purchased by Mite IGA Market here from John Clarkson, Mr. Enright’s son, Gordon is associated with him in the business.
Grant Nelson, son of Mr. & Mrs. L.R. Nelson of Marcus, who recently received his B.A. degree from Parson College, Fairfield, was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the US Army at a recent ceremony held at Kemper Military School and College at Boonville, Missouri.
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Colins of Moorpark, CA are parents of a daughter born Sunday, October 18.

Charles Kohn, 73, of Marcus, died Tuesday morning October 28 Floyd Balley Hospital in LeMars after a short illness.
William Gottsche, 64, of Remsen, died Saturday, October 25 in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a short illness.
Alex Nenortas, son of Mr. & Mrs. Stasys Nenortas of Marcus, received a $375 Bishop Buffet’s Scholarship from Ralph Kuehl, vice president of the first at Iowa State University.
Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Maas of Gettysburg, SD are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, October 21.
William McIntire, 17, was killed Tuesday afternoon in a car-train crash at the Illinois Central crossing on the blacktop just west of Marcus.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Meyer Thursday, October 23 at Floyd Valley Hospital.

Arthur Jenkins, 81 passed away on September 27 at Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital, Seal Beach, CA.
Kate Ernst, 82, passed away at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital October 18, following a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Anthony Ehrig of Cleghorn became the proud parents of a baby girl on October 3 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Violet Woodall returned Monday night from a two week visit with Lt. Col and Mrs. Virgil Wirt in Colorado Springs.
Word has been received of the death of William Hansen, 51, of Fort Collins, CO formerly of Cleghorn.
Mr. & Mrs. Dennis George of Minneapolis are the parents of a baby girl born October 11.

Mrs. Marty Alesch will be celebrating her 90th birthday on Tuesday, October 30.
Mr. & Mrs. Steve Pitts of rural Cleghorn are proud parents of a baby boy born October 21 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
Captain Mary Dunn, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Dunn, receive the Meritorious Service Medal on October 2.
Ron Seggerman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman is a member of the Morningside College Marching Maroon Chief Band.
Mrs. Henry Ducommun, 75, of Cleghorn died Wednesday, October 17 in Sioux City hospital after a six month illness.
