110 Years Ago – 1914
Two well known and beloved members of the Marcus community passed away during the past week. Mrs. Mary Wilcox, 64, died September 14 at the home of her daughters, Mrs. L.B. Nelson in Marcus. John Garvin, 74, died on Friday, September 11 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Both east trains were three hours late on Tuesday owing to washouts at Galena, Illinois. The rain which fell on this section was general throughout the middle west. Owning to the late train, several people who had planned to attend a wedding in LeMars lost out on the festivities.
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Dorr went to LeMars Tuesday morning to attend the wedding of Mr. Dorr’s brother, Lester which took place that evening in the home of the bride, Miss Jessie Jackson.
At the home twelve miles south east of Marcus, Mrs. William Treptow Sr., passed away Wednesday morning after a long and painful illness.
Mr. & Mrs. William Raetz, former resident here, are rejoicing over the arrival of a daughter Wednesday, September9.
100 Years Ago – 1924
E.P. Quirin returned home from Sioux City Sunday evening where he has been exhibiting his celebrated Percheron horses. Mr. Quirin brought home a grand array of ribbons which means much to the owner.
Miss Marie Radcliffe of this city entered the automobile races in Sioux City last week. In a contest with Mrs. Authur Hanford driving a Lincoln car. Miss Radcliffe won second and was presented with a knitted wool gown.
A baby boy arrived at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Mossman on Tuesday night September 23.
The produce house of Sjostrom Brothers was totally destroyed Tuesday night iin one of the most disastrous fires which have occurred in recent years. The total loss of the two story brick building and stock is estimated at $40,000.
95 Years Ago -1929
An important business was made in Marcus on Tuesday when George Tutt sold his hardware business to James Rae of Marcus and his brother-in-law, Roy DeShaw of Belle Plaine.
Marcus people may well feel a little proud of the new theatre recently opened by Mr. & Mrs. E.E. Grun. Both the exterior and interior present a new appearance “The Rainbow” is showing good pictures and drawing good crowds.
The store known as Grauer’s Grocery, has been sold to A.W. Kammerer of Gladbrook, Iowa and his son L.A. Kramerer of Chicago, Illinois. The new firm to be known as Buckie’s Grocery, took possession on Tuesday, September 24.
Phil Delaney was elected president of the sophomore students union of Trinity College at the annual class election held last Wednesday. Howard Flanagan was elected judge of the supreme court in the same organization.
On Wednesday, September 18 the Trinity congregation united to surprise the pastor and wife, Rev. and Mrs. A.C. Ilten, the occasion being their 25th wedding anniversary.
85 Years Ago -1939
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Walsh moved into their newly constructed home on Amherst Street Friday. The new home is a five room cottage with two bedrooms and bath and full basement.
About 300 corn probes have been sold recently by John Sand local inventor of the Iowa Corn Probe, which is used by the corn sealing authorities in Iowa to test the cribs of ear corn before sealing.
Two Marcus young folks attending Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls are playing in th college band. Vernell Smith plays the trombone and George Mayer plays first cornet in the college musical organization.
A deal has been closed by which John Wankum and Herman Hueser have purchased the Berendes dairy and the new owners will take possession in November.
One car containing 24 steel bins has arrived in Marcus to be set up for storing sealed corn delivered by farmers to Commodity Credit Corporation.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Mr. & Mrs. Kleng Olson, formerly of Marcus, were very unfortunate while moving their furniture from Marcus to Vermillion, SD where they intended to store it with relatives there. A few minutes before moving the furniture into the house, the truck caught fire and all the furniture was badly damaged.
Irene’s Hamburger Shop, managed for the last two years by Mrs. Harry Baumgardner, was closed last week an account of the shortage of help and her ill health.
The Lunch Room operated by Mr. Hans Delaney, opened for business on Wednesday in the building formerly occupied by the North Side Cafe on the east side of Main Street.
After having completed eight hours of dual control under supervision, Harvey Geibe, Jr. made his first solo flight at LeMars Tuesday evening.
75 Years Ago -1949
A raging fire completely destroyed completely destroyed the Kummerfeldt Service Station at Germantown, Wednesday morning with an estimated loss in excess of $20,000.
The number of cases of mumps in Marcus reached almost epidemic proportions the past week with eight families having warning signs on their homes.
The city council at a special meeting Tuesday evening, completed the purchase of a new fire truck for the local department. The purchase will be financed partly by the fire department and partly by the town’s fire maintenance fund.
Hans Peter Hansen, 76, passed away Monday, September 16 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Erban Wankum in Marcus after several months of illness.
Leon Bentz, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Bentz, underwent an operation Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City, Leon chipped a piece of bone from his left elbow while pitching ball Monday and the operation was necessary to replace the chip in its proper position.
70 Years Ago -1954
The Marcus Eagles opened up their home stand last Friday evening with a 26 to 6 loss to a good Correctionville team.
Mr. Floyd Nagle of Marcus and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jahnel of Oakland, NE arrived home Sunday from a three week vacation trip through the northwest.
Rev. A. J. Quirin, 79 of Salem, Oregon, former pastor of the Methodist Church here and an uncle of E.P. Quirin, died at Salem Monday night.
Clarence Sand and Cy Delaney were in the southwestern part of North Dakota last week looking over the cattle situation. While there Mr. Delaney purchased 70 head of feeders.
M.E. Delaney, 80 and a Marcus pioneer and merchant, passed away Wednesday morning in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Burch in Marcus.
65 Years Ago -1959
John Delaney, 87 and prominent figure in the history of Marcus, died Sunday morning, September 13 in Detroit, Michigan.
A crew of men started Tuesday to install the alleys at the new bowling alley here and Larry Slagter, operator of the new business, hopes to be going by early October.
Linda Johnson, the eight year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Roy Johnson of Marcus, died suddenly Tuesday morning, September 14 in University hospital in Iowa City. Linda had a chronic heart condition.
An amazing total of 21,400 people used the facilities of the Marcus swimming pool during the past summer, according to figures complied by Manager Jerry Golden. That figure includes Red Cross swimming lessons which were given to 877 individuals. Of those 124 were adults.
Mr. & Mrs. Eric Pearson will observe their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, September 20.
60 Years Ago -1964
Jim Juhl, 77 and prominent Marcus retired farmer, died Monday in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.
Just as the News went ot press, it was learned that Emil Ebert, 64, had died suddenly at his home in south Marcus presumably from heart failure.
Lloyd Barnes, who has completed fifty years of membership in the Masonic Fraternity, will be guest of honor at a meeting of Seba Lodge No. 463 to be held Thursday evening, September 24 at the Masonic Temple.
Mr. & Mrs. Orman Nafziger of Sioux Falls, SD are parents of a daughter born Tuesday, September 15.
Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Riedmann were honored at a charivari Wednesday evening, September 7 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Van Dam.
55 Years Ago -1969
Canidates for king and queen of the Marcus homecoming are Debra Davis, Bill Hagey, Joyce Peavy, John Mayer, Patricia Nielsen and Bob Dorr.
Mrs. Clara Walsh, 71 and long time resident of Marcus, was laid to rest here Monday, September 11.
Mr. & Mrs. Eldon Hansen of Fairfax announce the arrival of a son Thursday, September 11.
Mr. & Mrs. Ted Stoltenberg were honored Sunday on their 16th wedding anniversary with dinner at the Ken-A-Bob in Storm Lake.
A total of 132 pupils were registered at Holy Name elementary school this fall. There are 71 girls and 61 boys in the eight grades.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mrs. Hilda Brandt, 71 passed away September 12 at the Immanuel Invalid Home in Omaha.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Hueser are parents of a baby girl born Wednesday, September 11.
The Marcus Eagles defeated Meriden-Cleghorn 14-6 in the second game of the season there. Scoring came in the first quarter on a one yard plunge by Tom Roese. Neighter team scored in the second or third quarter. In the fourth quarter. Marcus scored again on a forth one yard pass from Rollie Hanson to Dick Bork.
John Marten Babel, 78 of Cleghorn died September 10 at Veterans Administration Hospital in DesMoines.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Nelson, Brian, Paula, Bobbi and Sam were hosts on Sunday, September 15 at the Iron Horse restaurant at Sheldon honoring Mr. & Mrs. Claude Gray on their 40th wedding anniversary.
The Roethler Funeral Home Chapel will have an open house on Sunday, September 15 from 1-5 pm.
Mr. & Mrs. Phil Brady are the parents of a baby girl born Monday, September 9.
Albert Koth of Lakeside, Iowa passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on August 28.
Roger Leavitt of Marcus has been selected as director of District 4 of the Area Education Agency at a convention in the Primghar Community School.
A group of volunteers turned up rather unexpectedly last Sunday to finish construction of an addition to the Andy Meehan home, Andy as you may recall, was injured when a pile of lumber feel on him.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Harold Smith, 70 of Cleghorn died Thursday, September 13 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. Francis Delaney, 73 of Marcus, died Friday in LeMars hospital after a long illness.
Rev E.L. Wittkop of Storm Lake, a former Marcus resident, will be honored on the occasion of his 90th birthday with an open house.
Servers were held Thursday, September 13 in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Germantown, for Kelly J. Burmakow, 2 daughter of Gregory and Shirley Puhrmann Burmakow rural Paullina.
Mrs. Earnest Wilcox, 50 of rural Cleghorn died Sunday, September 9 in a Sioux City hospital after an illness of four months.
Mr & Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Cherokee will be honored on their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, September 23.
Mr. & Mrs. John Dorr are the parents of a daughter born September 2.
Marv Ebert announces the progress report on the South side Apartments four units which he is constructing as a Low Rent Housing Program for Senior Citizens. The project was started about the middle of July and will be completed sometime this fall.
The Marcus Eagles opened their season with a close 7-0 victory over the Eastwood Raiders, the defending Iowa State football champions.
