110 Years Ago – 1914
Myrtle and Edna Imhoff were hostesses on Friday afternoon to a company of their lady friends in honor of Mrs. McGee, the new domestic science teacher. Miss Edna and Miss McGee were classmates at Drake University.
Mrs. W.W. White went to Meriden Saturday morning where she acted as one of the judges in the cooking exhibit at Meriden’s picnic.
Forrest Brown left yesterday for Ames where he will enter the state school to take a course in forestry.
While playing on Main Street Monday evening with some of the boys Paul Keleher received a bad cut on his forehead which required several stitches to close the wound.
Cyril Brady left Tuesday afternoon for Sioux City where he will enter Trinity College.
Dr. F.E. Loomis and family left Sunday morning by automobile for Lincoln, Nebraska and other points.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Bird are proud parents of a son born to them Tuesday, September 16.
L.J. McGivern, local attorney is in Canada on a hunting expedition.
Rev. D.A. McBurney, Methodist minister of Onawa, acted as roadside sanitarian Wednesday in aiding two Catholic priests whom he found bleeding and badly shaken from injuries received in an automobile accident a mile north of Whiting. The injured priests were the Rev Father George Cook of Marcus and the Rev. Father Patrick Costello of Eagle Grove.
A tragedy occurred at the farm home of Mr. & Mrs. George Peters about five o’clock Saturday, September 13 when their infant daughter, Maxine met death by drowning. The 19 month old baby was playing with clothespins on the porch and it is believed that in an effort to retrieve some that had fallen, fell into a 10 gallon jar of rain water setting by the porch.
95 Years Ago -1929
Figures in the aggregate are somewhat surprising and startling. There are 5,750 cars and 612 trucks in operation at this time in Cherokee County. All of the people in Cherokee county could get into Cherokee county cars and go on a trip at the same time and not be crowded for there are about one car to every three people in this county. There would still be 612 trucks at home.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Dorr plan to leave from Germany Tuesday for New York to be home October 1.
Thursday, the second day of Cherokee county’s 22nd annual plowing contest brought a crowd estimated at 4,000 people making this year’s match one of the most successful ever staged.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Hueser returned Friday from a two week vacation which was spent visiting relatives and friends in Montrose, Lamar and Kansas City, Missouri.
Harold Booth and Ray Hoops left the fist of the week for Iowa City whee they will enroll as sophomore students.
85 Years Ago -1939
Miss Vesta Pepple, eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.J. Pepple, arrived home Tuesday morning following a three month visit through the eastern states. She traveled 8,000 miles and visited Washington, DC, New York City and the New York World’s Fair.
Mr. & Mrs.Bernard Nelson sailed from Sweden from the USA on September 12 according to a letter received by the News from Laholm, Sweden where they have spent the summer.
Lee Pratt, owner of the Gamble store, is moving from his present location to the Collins building formerly occupied by the Ahmann’s store.
Don Bester and his orchestra will appear at the Novan Ballroom here Sunday night. Bester, who has the only dance orchestra featuring the Vibraharp won national recognition with Jack Benny on the Hello radio program.
Ruth Samuelson left for Tuscon, Arizona last Friday to resume her studies at the State University. She will stay with her sister Mildred, who is an instructor at the University there.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Last Week the Hey Harness Shop was moved to its new location at the rear of the building formerly known as Irene’s Hamburger Shop.
Mrs. Reinhardt Olson was complimented on her 66th birthday Saturday afternoon September 9 at the home by 15 friends who brought their lunch baskets and spent the post lunch hour socially.
The Mount Pleasant and Cleghorn Presbyterian Churchs re-opened last Sunday with Rev. Dallas Johnosn the new minister assuming the duties left by Rev. John Thaden, now an army champlain.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Atkins are the parents of a son born to them at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Sunday, September 10.
Miss Katheryn Collins left last Thursday for Pontiac, Michigan where she has a position teaching. Enroute she will visit with her sister and brother in law Mr. & Mrs. Henry Gottesleben at Detroit, Michigan.
75 Years Ago -1949
Joe Collins, 67 and life long resident of the Marcus community, passed away in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Tuesday night.
O.J. Strampe, cashier of the Farmers State Bank of Marcus, was honored at a dinner party Wednesday evening in the basement of the Grace Methodist Church here. The dinner marked Mr. Strampe’s 35th anniversary in the banking business.
The Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington last Thursday approved plans that will result in the merger of the Iowa Public Service Company.
Word was received last week of the death of William Bird, a former resident of Marcus, and a brother of Mrs. Rosa Ryan who died at Elkton, SD
70 Years Ago -1954
Chris Juhl, 68 and life long resident of this community, passed away Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Dunn are the parents of a son born Friday, September 10 at Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars.
Two elderly ladies, both aunts of Earnest Nelson, Marcus Hatchery man, lost their lives in a recent hurrican which ravished the northeast coast of the United States.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Ogren and Mrs. Blanche Pitts entertained a number of guests Sunday in the Ogren home honoring Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Pitts on their 54th wedding anniversary.
“Elephant Walk” one of the most highly publicized pictures of the past year will be at the Marland Sunday and Monday.
65 Years Ago -1959
The town of Marcus has purchased a 250ft square plot in the Lee Alesch farm west of town to be used for a sewage disposal system to be built sometime in the future. Consideration was $1500.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Lauters are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, September 6 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Leonard Rrecknagel, 80 and longtime Remsen barber, died unexpectedly last Thursday at his home.
Louis Weber and his son, Paul, Marcus Hereford breeders made quite a cleanup at the recent Iowa State Fair at Des Moines. They showed the reserve grand champion bull, the senior champion bull and took first place in the two year old bull division.
The Farms Cooperative Elevator Company of Marcus will entertain its patrons and friends at an open house Monday marking the formal opening of its new $240,000 feed mill.
60 Years Ago -1964
Dale Ginger, 30 of Sutherland passed away Tuesday evening September 9 at seven following an accident at the Wilson Packing Plant under construction near Cherokee.
Mrs. Lynn, 77 passed away Monday, September 7 at Lusk, Wyoming following an illness of several months.
Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Simons are parents of a daughter born September 5.
Labor Day’s violent weather played havoc with many plans including those of the Cole circus which spent the wet holiday in Marcus.
Ronald Prunty received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Morningside College on August 22 with a major in business administration and a minor in livestock marketing. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Prunty of Marcus.
55 Years Ago -1969
Things aren’t quite the same at the Iowa Public Service office in Marcus these days. Mrs. W.E. Neva Witter retired from active duty the first of the month after serving since December of 1955. Before that she was employed by the Mouw Hardware here for eight years. Replacing Mrs. Witter at IPS is Julie Peterson, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Carlyle Peterson.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Leo Murry Wednesday, September 3 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. John Coburn Jr., Johnny and Ward returned to their home at Beaverton, Oregon Monday afternoon after spending ten days in the John Coburn home and with other relatives and friends.
Col. And Mrs, Vance Marquis and Roger Leavitt will leave Monday form Minneapolis in a group of 132 Rotarians and Rotary Anns from District 562 for a visit to England, Scotland and Europe.
Marcus lost its first football game to Willow Friday night by a score of 6 to 0.

The Roethler Funeral Home Chapel will have an open house on Sunday, September 15 from 1-5 pm.
Mr. & Mrs. Phil Brady are the parents of a baby girl born Monday, September 9.
Albert Koth of Lakeside, Iowa passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on August 28.
Roger Leavitt of Marcus has been selected as director of District 4 of the Area Education Agency at a convention in the Primghar Community School.
A group of volunteers turned up rather unexpectedly last Sunday to finish construction of an addition to the Andy Meehan home, Andy as you may recall, was injured when a pile of lumber feel on him.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mrs. Earnest Wilcox, 50 of rural Cleghorn died Sunday, September 9 in a Sioux City hospital after an illness of four months.
Mr & Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Cherokee will be honored on their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, September 23.
Mr. & Mrs. John Dorr are the parents of a daughter born September 2.
Marv Ebert announces the progress report on the South side Apartments four units which he is constructing as a Low Rent Housing Program for Senior Citizens. The project was started about the middle of July and will be completed sometime this fall.
The Marcus Eagles opened their season with a close 7-0 victory over the Eastwood Raiders, the defending Iowa State football champions.
