Making Ice Cream at the Marcus Library
by Dallas Carey
There’s nothing more perfect than ice cream on a scorching summer day. And when you’ve whipped up that ice cream yourself with a bit of mixing and shaking, it somehow tastes even better!
Recently, kids and adults alike swarmed into the library to welcome Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom – or rather, Library – for an afternoon of fun and learning about the origins of ice cream. The atmosphere was buzzing with curiosity. One of the chilling questions was, “Do brown cows really make chocolate ice cream?” and “Can red cows give us strawberry milk?” Our community’s kids are no slouches – they knew that ice cream starts with dairy cows. But what they didn’t know was the journey from cow in the field to ice cream on their tables.
Luckily, our Siouxland Ag gals delivered an engaging lesson on the process, along with a reminder of all the wonderful things that come from dairy cows (Can you guess some? Ask your kids or grandkids!).
With a chorus of excitement from the kids as they eagerly awaited their turn for the ingredients to be added, and then enthusiastically shook up their ice cream bags to actually “make” the ice cream, everyone savored a cool, refreshing sweet treat on that sweltering summer day! The highlight? The kids added a little extra fun by letting out a few adorable moos along the way, making the whole experience even more “moo-velous.”
