Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society Meeting
The Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society will meet on Saturday, July 20th at 1:30 pm on the fourth floor of the Plymouth County Historical Museum, 335 1st Ave SW, Le Mars. This month’s guest speaker, Susan Moller, will give a presentation on the history of the town of Craig and its historic St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
As a Craig resident for some 45 years, Moller served as researcher and editor of the centennial book “Craig, Iowa 1911 – 2011, A History and Reference.” A native of Kansas, she met her husband Roger while they both attended Westmar College in Le Mars. After their marriage, they eventually purchased and settled on 280 acres bordering Craig.
Susan will not only discus the founding of Craig and its Lutheran Church, she will also talk about the opening of its many businesses over time. Enhancing her program, she will share a number of vintage photos.
As with a number of other Northwest Iowa towns and cities, Craig’s founding resulted from the then-new railroad running from Merrill to Hawarden. Craig, Brunsville and McNally were all established during that time.
Discovering the chronicles of any Plymouth County town is always a big draw at genealogy meetings. This one is certain to interest area folks of all ages. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission. Refreshments will be served.
