110 Years Ago – 1914
The Boy Scouts are planning to go to Mill Creek next Monday for a two day camp. Some will make the trip on their bicycles and others will go on the train to Meriden and walk from there.
The Marcus basketball boys crossed bats with the Sutherland boys last Sunday and were defeated by a score of 4 to 1.
The little daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Peterson is convalescing from a very serious illness with pneumonia.
105 Years Ago -1919
One of the worst storms in history of Marcus since the tornado of June 14, 1885 hit this town last Saturday night about nine o’clock on the 39th wedding anniversary of the storm.
Will McDaniel a well known farmer living north of Marcus, was struck by a bolt of lightning and instantly killed last Friday evening.
Edith Cole, who has been night telephone operator, has resigned her position and returned to her home at Meriden. Miss Winnie Toomey will take her place for a week until a successor is obtained.
A large number of Marcus folks drove to Sanborn last Sunday to witness the ruins of the cyclone which visited that town last Friday afternoon and found that conditions were even worse than had been reported in the newspaper.
Charles Ames, who has been teaching in a school in Berkeley, CA, arrived here Tuesday afternoon for a visit with his parents.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. Nels Pallesen of Marcus are the proud parents of a son born March 22.
Mildred Johnson of Sioux City district Luther League meeting in Sioux City Saturday.
The members of Trinity Lutheran Church congregation met June 11 to surprise their pastor Rev A.C. Iten who had on that day completed 25 years in the ministry, twenty one of which he has spent in Amherst township.
The annual school census has just been completed by George Johnson secretary. The total enumeration of the children of school age for the year 1924 is 297 of which 140 are boys and 157 are girls.
Marcus will dedicate its park on July 4 by a program that will include baseball and an all day list of sports, speeches and pyrotechnics.
95 Years Ago -1929
Sjostom Brothers have installed in the home building in Marcus, a large modern cold storage plant, which will take care of their eggs and dressed poultry.
The Marcus Beauty Shoppe, under the management of Ruth Sawvell and Verna Waddell, opened to the public Tuesday in the room s beneath the Farmers State Bank.
Friday is rally day for the 4H girls clubs of Cherokee County and at least 150 girls and their mothers will gather at Riverside Park in Cherokee for the observation of this event. The program will be in charge of Miss Madge Barnes of Marcus, county president of the 4H girls.
Marcus beat the Remsen baseball team there Sunday afternoon in a 14 to 2 victory, Snyder, Hamilton and Busch were high batters for Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Cave and family returned Tuesday from Madison, SD where they had been visiting with relatives.
85 Years Ago -1939
By a score of 5 to 3, the Marcus juniors lost the ball game Tuesday with a Cherokee team composed of players form Washta, Quimby, Larrabee, Schissleville and Cherokee.
The early was delayed briefly Monday morning when a Knight of the Road persisted in riding in the baggage car against the wishes of the train officials.
Daniel Hendrickson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Hendrickson, made a trip last week on his bicycle to visit with his grandmother at Spencer. On the way back he visited in Primghar, Don traveled about 175 miles.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Mrs. Ben Beck 60, died at her home here Friday after months of ill health.
Miss Catherine Meehan, youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Meehan, completed the work for her Bachelor of Arts Degree June 9 at the State University of Iowa.
Mrs. Elzabeth Wilberding, age 77, passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital June 22 following a short illness.
The twenty- fifth wedding anniversary to Mr. & Mrs. Carl Reed was observed Tuesday evening June 20 with a streak fry prepared on the open hearth in the convenient, pleasant open-air picnic quarters at the rear of the Reed home.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Busch are the parents of a son to them Friday, June 23 at the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
75 Years Ago -1949
Leslie Lincoln Patton passed away Wednesday, June 22, 1949 at 9 pm whole vacationing near Kenora, Ontario, Canada.
A son, Eugene Roberts was born to Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Miller on June 16 at the LeMars Hospital.
Starting next Saturday, Marcus will have only one train each way a day according to Illinois Central real train master. T. E. Parker of Cherokee and R. R. Hughes of Sioux City the lines general agent.
Mr. & Mrs. Earl Devin held an open house Sunday in honor of their silver wedding anniversary and Mrs. Devin’s birthday.
The Marcus Midgets kept the slate clean Monday evening after a narrow squeak, winning to a 3 to 1 game from Paullina after trailing for four innings. Leon Bentz for Marcus and Hattman for Paullina each allowed five hits. Boever getting two of them for Marcus, Leon struck out 12 batters.
The Amherst Busy Bees held their regular meeting at the home of Dorothy Peterson Wednesday afternoon, June 22.
70 Years Ago -1954
The Marcus postoffice is now in operation under what might be called a temporary acting postmaster following the resignation of Ray Muehl.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Kestel are the parents of a daughter born Thursday June 24 in the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars.
Alan Hoffmeire, 7 year old farm lad, was drowned recently in a farm pond near Denison. He was playing with other boys when the bank caved in dropping him into 12 feet of water.
A new bulk warehouse is going up at the Sand’s Seed Service just north of the present plant. The new building will be 50 x 134 feet, adding to the storage capacity of what is already one of the largest such plants in the country.
Dick Richardson coach at the Marcus Public school last year has resigned his position in rejoin the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
65 Years Ago -1959
Nancy Cook, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Cook won the $10 in Marcus money for the slogan for th highway sign. Nancy’s entry was “Marc-us for Progress”
Mrs. Bertha Krammer, nee Broitzmann, died June 21 at the age of 84 years, four months and seven days.
Wayne Kenertz, 36 year old Remsen farmer, died June 22 at Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars following a three month illness.
William Beck, 75, passed away Thursday, June 18 in San Francisco, CA., Funeral services were Saturday and burial took place in Memorial Cemetery in Sacramento.
A picnic dinner was held in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Howard Peavey Sunday honoring Mr. & Mrs. Chris Wilkens on their 25th wedding anniversary.
60 Years Ago -1964
The Marcus Community School Board has hired Duane Little as superintendent for the 1964-65 school year.
Funeral services were held Friday June 19 at the Methodist church in Hartley for Jacob Weimer, 78 who passed away at Detroit Lakes Minnesota where she had been visiting.
Merton Goorich, 92, and resident of Cleghorn since 1880 died Sunday, June 21 in Cherokee.
The Rev. Donald Culter will take over the pulpit of Grace Methodist church in Marcus Sunday, coming here from Sanborn.
Mrs Anna Elsie Johnson, 89, passed away Saturday afternoon at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where she had been a patient for a month.
55 Years Ago -1969
Daniel Enneking, son of Mrs. Peterson and the late Ben Enneking of Marcus was on of 80 graduates of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines on June 5.
Mr. & Mrs. Larry Reinert of Cherokee are parents of a son born Friday, June 20.
The heaviest rain in a number of years fell on the Marcus Community early Wednesday morning, accompanied by strong winds and a spectacular program of thunder and lightning. Between four and five inches of rain fell in about three hours.
Harry Smith, 71 of Ireton passed away June 13 at Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls after a month’s illness.
Dan Lauters of Marcus received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Loras college at commencement exercises June 1.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mrs. Carl Pedersen, 79 passed away Monday, June 24 at FVH following a lingering illness.
Thomas Weise of Marcus was among 127 young musicians who attended the annual Junior High School Band and Art Camp at Morningside College.
Mr. & Mrs. Clinton Johnson entertained on Saturday evening, June 5 for their 35th wedding anniversary at a buffet supper at their farm home south of Marcus.
The Marcus High School Medrigal singers have been invited to sing at the 1974 Lutheran Kaymen’s League International Convention in Columbus, Ohio on July 29.
Miss Marilyn Hesse, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Welton Hesse of Cleghorn received a bachelor of science degree with a major in speech and drama and the Lutheran Teacher Diploma from Concordia College, Seward, NE at graduation exercises on May 25.
45 Years Ago – 1979
The Marcus Eagles defeated Hinton 10-6 in a conference battle last Friday night. Mike Bird was the winning pitcher who struck out 10 batters and sided his term offensively with three singles whil Greg Taylor tallied tow singles and a double.
The Remsen area will soon have available a new EMT ambulance service. The EMT program has been made a part of the Remsen fire department and the rescue unit of the fire department will be relieved of some if its emergency duties as the EMT program begins.
Dr. & Mrs. Steven Schachterle are the proud parents of a baby girl born Sunday, June 24 at FVH.
Mr. & Mrs. Steve Bierman are the proud parents of a son born 14 at Orange City.
