110 Years Ago – 1914
A son named Frederick Roy was born to Mr. & Mrs. David Warren but the little one was not permitted to live long and died soon after birth.
Thos. Herbert has just completed the erection of a new horse barn on his farm northeast of town. Later in the season he will build an addition to his house.
The town of Quimby suffered its first serious loss by fire on Thursday night when six building in the business district were consumed entailing a lost of between $30,000 and $35,000 only partly covered by insurance.
Frank Jenks has purchased a Ford touring car.
105 Years Ago -1919
F.A. Benedict has bought an auto and will hereafter make some fast trips on his mail route.
Harold Williams suffered a severe injury while in town Monday. In stepping from the automobile to the ground he broke a bone in his leg which will keep him from work for several days.
Miss Marie Ryan has accepted a position in the Delaney store.
Lester Christensen passed the eighth grad examination and received his diploma Saturday.
Roy Imhoff reached home Tuesday morning much to the joy of his parents who have been watching every day from his return. Roy has been in France since last fall.
Ralph Turner has rented the rooms over the News office and will open a panatorium.
The public school teachers enjoyed a picnic at Mill Creek last Thursday.
Schneider Bros. have the contraat to dig a well for the I.C. railroad company at Hinton.
100 Years Ago – 1924
At a special election last Monday, voters in the Simpson Bethle consolidated school district voted to erect four one room school buildings to replace the old structures which have stood for many a day.
Albert Anderson received a telegram Monday stating that all the buildings on the farm in Lake Benton, Minnesota, have been blown down during a cyclone which occurred Sunday.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Miller Sr., were pleasantly surprised last Sunday afternoon when more than one hundred relatives and friends gathered at their home to help celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
A happy spirit reigned throughout the evening when 67 people, most of whom where graduates from the Marcus High School, met in the M.E. Church basement for their first annual banquet in 14 years.
The annual commencement exercises for the eight grade rural school graduates of the county will be held in Cherokee June 25 at which time ninety young people will receive diplomas.
95 Years Ago -1929
Francis Brown of Marcus graduated from the Iowa State College at Ames Monday.
Cherokee County voters turned down the proposition of issuing bonds for paving and for graveling primary roads.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for Mrs. Thomas Farrell.
Sixty five graduates of Marcus High School gathered in the Methodist Church to enjoy the 5th annual banquet of the alumni association.
Mr. & Mrs. John Delaney were pleasantly surprised on their 5th wedding anniversary when friends and relatives gathered.
The Marcus Municipal band will give its first initial concert of the season next Saturday night.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Dorr are planning a European trip of several months.

G.R. Hobson moved Saturday to his new office east of C.W. Door’s store and garage.
Grasshoppers have been numerous at farms with a big hay acreages until the recent rains. They have eaten the leaves from the alfalfa and clipped the stems in spots,
Mr. & Mrs. Lin Stowater and family, Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Stowater and son, Viola Hohbach and Noel Roder were visitors at Lake Okoboji Sunday.
The Marcus Merchants lost a wild ball game ot Paullina Sunday by a score of 7-9.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The local fire department was called to the Mark Carey farm home 3 ½ miles north and 2 miles east of Marcus early Saturday night. An explosion of the gasoline used in the engine used as power for the double light plant located in the basement of the home was the cause of the fire which was kept well under control with no serious property damage resulting.
Lois Opal Walton, infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William Walton was born June 17 at Sacred Heart Hospital, died June 18 and was buried at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery on June 19.
Friday evening Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Chinn entertained a number of relatives at a chicken dinner at their home, the occasion being their 28th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Louis Means were pleasantly surprised last Sunday evening when a number of relatives and friends came to help celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary.
75 Years Ago -1949
The Marcus town council has purhcased 75 stop signs and plans to make three through streets in Marcus.
Funeral services for Oscar Johnson, 50, were held Friday afternoon.
Mr. & Mrs. Ben Delaney were honored at a surprise picnic dinner Sunday in observance of their forty eighth wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Nieman entertained a group of relatives at dinner Sunday in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary.
The official announcement of the change of ownership of the Gamble Store in Marcus was made this week. Jens Haahr, the new owner, is a brother of Ernest J.

Mr. & Mrs. Glen Jorgenson of Germantown are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday, June 9 in Sacred Heart Hospital.
Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst township is busy with plans and arrangements for observing the 75th anniversary of the founding of the congregation.
Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Harms, farm narrowly escaped serious injury Monday afternoon when their new Ford crashed into a gravel truck.
65 Years Ago -1959
Mrs Treff Stratton, 52 of 914 West Cedar, Cherokee, passed away Monday, June 15, after an illness of three weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Hueser became the parents of a girl born June 7 and Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Guido Berendes, 65 of Remsen died Monday night at Sacred Hospital in LeMars following a long illness.
Sunday evening, June 14 Mr. & Mrs. Frank Hewicker were presently surprised by friends and relatives on their 25th wedding anniversary.
A group of neighbors and friends gathered at the Dick Petersen farm west of Marcus Friday and made short work of cultivating his corn.
60 Years Ago -1964
The Rev. Roy Peterson 28 and assistant professor of psychology at Upper Iowa University of Fayette and a former resident of Marcus, died Sunday afternoon at his home in Fayette following a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Olof Wallin of Marcus will observe their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, June 21.
Funeral services were held Tuesday June 16 at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church south of Marcus for Mrs Roy Woodall, 67, who passed away unexpectedly Saturday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Clyde Conley, 65, passed away suddenly Saturday afternoon at his home in Marcus.
Miss Margaret Brady of Marcus was the recipient of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Junior High School Education at the State College of Iowa on June 4.

Mrs. Carl Reed has received word from her son, Robert that he expects to return to the mainland soon to accept the position of director of educational television stations programs service in Bloomington, Indiana.
Rolland Sherman Ames of Astoria, SD died at the Hendricks Hospital on Wednesday, May 14 after a short illness.
The Farmers Cooperative Elevator of Marcus has received a FEMIC achievement award for its outstanding truck fleet safety record during the past year.
The Rev Richard Viney has been assigned to the congregation of Grace Methodist Church in Marcus and with his family he will be arriving this Thursday.
Gene Schaeff of Marcus is one of 26 Juniors high school science teachers from throughout the nation who will attend Texas A&M University for a year study under the National Science Foundation Academic Year Institute Program.

Frank Unkur, age 85 of rural Cleghorn, died Tuesday afternoon in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a short illness.
Consecration services will be held for the new Grace United Methodist parsonage June 23.
A surprise farewell picnic supper was held at the Marcus park Thursday night June 13 for Margaret Williamson.
Mrs Harry Dragoo, 85 of Kingsley, died Wednesday, June 12 at the Sioux City hospital.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Eric Beauchamp, 8, son of Mr. & Mrs. of Remsen has been commended by the president of the Iowa chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for his record setting efforts on behalf of the foundation. During a recent bike-a-thon at Remsen, Eric’s efforts raised $288.75, setting a state record in funds collected by an individual.
Joseph Bird, son of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird, RR 2, Marcus has been selected to be a resident assistant in Roadman Hall at Morningside College for the next academic year.
Mr. & Mrs. Weldon Ohlendorf Jr. of Remsen announce the birth of a son on May 30 at FVH in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Larry Scaramella of San Diego, CA are the parents of their first child a daughter born June 8.
