110 Years Ago – 1914
The Amherst band boys will give a hard shadow social and entertainment at the F. Wagner school house.
White Phil Schmidt, employee of Mack’s Cafe, was lighting the coffee urn with a torch, a mighty explosion occurred. A leak in the urn had caused gasoline to spread over the counter and the flames spread rapidly over the room. But for the presence of mind of George Tutt and Ernest Rae, who used chemicals and flour, the interior might have been ruined.
105 Years Ago -1919
March 1, W. W. Bass purchased the Grauer News Stand and this week he is rich enough to buy a quarter section of Amherst Township land.
Peter Miller is another soldier wearing the gold chevron, who is home from seeing active service in France.
Miss Stella Allen arrived home on Tuesday to spend a vacation week with her parents. Miss Stella is teaching in the College at Mason City.
An epidemic of influenza seems to have struck Cleghorn and vicinity again.
On Monday, Ed Freed sold his 120 acre farm, one mile east of Cleghorn, to Peter Lehnhoff for $335 per acre.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Thelma Delores, 3 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Orin Shoemake, passed away at her home at Fielding following a sever illness from pneumonia.
The regular meeting of the Goodburn Post American Legion was held at the Legion Hall. Walter Meyer, who has been adjutant of the post since its organization, was presented with a wardrobe trunk in appreciation of his services by the member of the post.
Mrs. W.E. Willy, Jr., and Miss Hattie Ulstad were hostesses to the Royal Neighbors at the home of W.W. Bass on Tuesday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. George Rabel are the proud parents of a son.
95 Years Ago -1929
Seventy five members attended the regular session of the Marcus chapter of the Eastern Star Tuesday evening and enjoyed the program commemorating the 25th anniversary of its organization.
Evelyn Sand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sand, suffered a fracture of the hip and dislocated knee cap as a result of an accident which occurred Sunday afternoon.
Marcus high’s batmen downed Calumet on the home field Tuesday by a score of 19-5. Slim Drefke led the hitting with a couple singles, two triples and a four bagger.
Ben Beck has returned from a successful winter tour of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Canada with the Beck and Walker Minstrels
85 Years Ago -1939
John Sand returned from California and Honolulu arriving here Sunday. Mr. Sand reports an interesting trip to the Hawaiian Islands and says the natives are a friendly class of people.]
Marcus High School will begin their baseball practice this week. Last year the team lost only two games.
Word was received Saturday morning of the sudden death of J.P. Steinford of Hamilton, Montana, a brother in law of Felix and Theodore Treinen of Marcus.
Miss Marry Frances Sexton, a graduate of the class of 1936 at Holy Name school was among the thirty young women received into the Order of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin at Mount Carmel at Dubuque.
Miss Mary Ellen Kelly is the owner of a home grown cherry tree bearing two ripe cherries. Mrs. Ed Keleher planted the seed last summer and from them, two cherry trees were growing which are now 18 inches tall.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The Marcus Fire Department held their regular election of officers with the following men taking office Bill Witter, chief; Ben Enneking, assistant chief; John and Felix Treinen re-appointed as Fire Marshal.
Alex Miller of Marcus passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Thursday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Toner are the parents of a son born at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mrs. August Johnson, 80, passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Tom Woodall at 4 am Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1949
Dr. M.R Nelson and Clarence Pearson won first place in the shuffleboard league at the East side.
Mrs. Jane Reynolds, of Cleghorn passed away Monday evening in Cherokee.
The Nelson Furniture Company has obtained the dealership for Gulbransen pianos in this territory.
Jack Wilson will participate in the Iowa Spelling Contest at Des Moines this week, representing Cherokee County.
Many friends and relatives called Saturday evening March 26 to help Mr. & Mrs. Ed Hinspeter celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary.

Mr. & Mrs. Loren Lukens became parents of twin boys Saturday.
Howard Fitzgerald, superintendent of schools in Elhorn, Iowa, for twelve years, has been elected to serve as superintendent of Marcus Schools.
Mrs. Willis Nuestrom and son Billy, left Saturday for Honolulu where she will join her husband A1c Willis Nuestrom, who is stationed there.
Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Garvin are parents of a boy.
Ray Niemann, Marcus jeweler, was named president of the Marcus Rotary Club.
Mr. & Mrs. Emil Borgeson will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with open house at their home Easter Sunday, April 18th.
Mr. Buster Jenness, wife of a Marcus farmer, was one of the winners in a nation wide Christmas tree decorating contest conducted by the distributors of Scotch brand tapes.

The first stop in the installation of a dial exchange here was started by the West Iowa Telephone Company this week, the construction of a building to house the exchange.
Shirley Dorr of Marcus has recently accepted a position as research assistant with Science Research Associates in Chicago.
Dean Ohlendorf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Ohlendorf, underwent a tonsillectomy at Sacred Heart hospital.
The delegate for Hawkeye Girls State is Judy Juhl with Jean Wankum as alternate.
The News this week carries an advertisement for a new business here. After a number of years of working for local contractors, Marvin Ebert has gone into the masonry business for himself.
The construction of a new station in Marcus will start May 1 by the Community Cooperative Oil Company.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Arley Grage Monday, March 30.
Funeral services for Mrs. Phillip Dorr were held at Trinity Lutheran Church on March 27.

Daisy, the Appaloosa mare belonging to Doug Simons of rural Marcus, surprised her young owner by presenting him with twin colts. According to the obstetrician in charge, twin colts occur about once in 100,000 times.
Wagner Motors of Marcus Monday received a telegram informing them that they had won a ten day all expense paid trip to Europe.
Clarence Nelson, 47, former resident of Marcus community passed away at Henderson, Nevada, following a short illness.
Wilbur Hohbach and John Robinson have been presented sow and pig management awards by the Moorman Manufacturing Company.
A son was born February 24, to Mr. & Mrs. Hans Meehan at Sacred Heart Hospital morning.

Don Geringer, Gary Booth, Carl Klingborg left Thursday evening for Denver and will be vacationing there for a week.
Rudy Appledorn, 73, mayor of Primghar, passed away on Tuesday.
Terri Rassel, Barb Friedrich, Joan Kass, Jean Lehnhoff, Joan Ebert, Shari Galigan, Debbie Bork, Kathy Bird and Sandy Jenness have started candystriping at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Russel Vander Brake has announced that Russel’s Ready Mix Inc. with plants in Orange City, Sheldon, Hartley, Paullina, and Remsen. Has merged with Cambier Ready Mix of Alton and Marcus.
Mrs. Ernest (Margaretha) Digel, passed away Wednesday at the home of her daughters, Mrs. William Gettner, after failing health the past four years.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Meylor became parents of a baby boy born Thursday March 27, 1969.
A birthday gathering was held in the Delmer Drefke home Wednesday evening honoring his birthdays of Mrs. Drefke and her grandson Brent.

Kay Bass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bass, has been pledged to become a member of Psi Chi National Honor Society in psychology.
Mrs. Irene Ebert returned a week ago after spending a one month vacation in California.
Mr. & Mrs. Cy Brownmiller attended the baptism of their grandson, Bart Michael Brownmiller, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LeMars.
Jane Bird, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird, and Patty Theisen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Theisen have been named to the Dean’s list for term II at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City.
Funeral services for Mrs. Earl Lindahl were conducted Monday, April 1.
Charles Garvin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Garvin of Marcus has completed the requirements necessary for graduation from the Professional Accounting Program at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, SD.
45 Years Ago – 1979
The 1979 Rosburg Award was presented to Greg Taylor, as the outstanding senior male athlete scholar. Steve Hiller was awarded the 1979 Hanson Award for being the most promising sophomore athletic. The 1979 Witter Award was presented to Bobbi Nelson for outstanding senior female athletic.
Mrs. Lauretta Nagle of Marcus was honored at the state conference of the Daughters of Revolution held in Des Moines.
The Marcus Variety Store (formerly Brel Variety) will open on Monday. New store owners are Carlyle and Verdetta Peterson.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Thomson of Cleghorn became parents of a son born March 29 at the Orange City hospital.
On March 31, Stephanie Seggerman daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman tied for first medalist at a math bee held at Sioux Center. She scored 66 out of a total of 69 points.
40 Years Ago –1984
Claude and Ruby Gross of Gross, Inc, Marcus just participated in a marketing conference with the top level management of White Farm Equipment Company.
The Marcus Woman’s Club would like to thank those who have offered materials and help towards the downtown Mini-park project.
Karl M. “Bud” Johnson, 70, of Remsen passd away in a hospital in LeMars after a long illness.
Charles Ferrin recently received a Diploma as an electronic technician for Gateway Electronics of Omaha.
Robert Swanger of Cleghorn passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, March 30, after a two year illness.
Alice Nier, formerly of Meriden passed away Tuesday in a hospital in Hutchinson.
