100 Years Ago – 1924
P.R. Harshbarger of Adair was elected superintendent of the Marcus public School.
The News has purchased a new Model C Intertype slug casting machine, costing $5,000, which will replace this old machine which has been used for the past 11 years.
Members of the Marcus Legion post are discussing the possibility of building a Legion Hall. The post has $2500 in cash and bonds.
Good Friday will be observed by Marcus businessmen and all the stores will be closed from 2 to 3 in the afternoon.
It has been announced that the Illinois Central railroad will take over the Minneapolis and St. Louis railroad in the near future giving one more direct route from Sioux City to Minneapolis and it will go through Marcus.
95 Years Ago -1929
Funeral services were held in the Lutheran Church in Remsen on Monday afternoon, April 1, for Walter Bjork, who passed away at his home in Remsen.
The barber from Sioux City, who purchased the shop a few weeks ago from Earl Walrod, closed his business here yesterday, and moved the equipment and fixtures to Sioux City.
Madge Barnes of Marcus, who spore “For France”, won first in the dramatic class of the sub-district contest held in the Wilson High School auditorium at Cherokee Friday evening.
Evelyn Sand, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Sand, suffered a fracture a fracture of the hip and dislocated knee cap as a result of an accident which occurred Sunday.
85 Years Ago -1939
Jimmy Smith, son of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Smith, was chosen by the Roberts Dairy of Sioux City to represent mickey Mouse from Hollywood broadcasting on the Orpheum stage in Sioux City Saturday.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon for Calvin Peters, who passed away at his home March 31.
The high school music festival will be held Friday evening, April 14, it is announced by Carl Sagness, board director.
In a real estate deal completed Tuesday, Fred Dorr, and Ray Walsch secured possession of two lots at the southeast corner of Locust and Amherst Streets.
W.E. Witter section foreman at Marcus, was given and award by the Illinois Central Railroad for five years of perfect supervision from a safety standpoint.

The building formerly known as the Marcus News office and owned by Forrest Marshall, is in the process of being remodeled into a very attractive business place.
Lois Peters has been classified as one of the one hundred candidates to enter training in the Cadet Nursing Corps.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Donner received word that their son, Cpl. Vernon Donner, was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
75 Years Ago -1949
A chicken house, some farm tools, a portable hog house and 400 seven week old chickens were destroyed by fire at the Ellis Holmes place just south of the Marcus and Amherst Cemetery.
Mrs. Otto Jorgensen, 59, passed away Saturday after a long illness.
William Witter was named president of the board of directors of the Marcus Independent School district at its organizational meeting Monday night.
The large barn on the Elmer Wester farm 5 miles south of Cleghorn was completely destroyed by fire.
A.C. Stanbrough returned home Sunday from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Sioux City where he had been for the past three weeks having undergone surgery on his leg.
Kathleen, the 3 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Rex Rosburg was rendered unconscious when struck by a car on Sunday evening. Fortunately no bones were broken and she appears to be well on the road to recovery.
70 Years Ago -1954
The Marcus Community Fire Truck Association has added a water supply truck which will accompany the community truck on farm fire calls.
Charles Nielsen, who with Dick DeVries, bought out Earl Wilson, original operator of the Marland Theatre, has purchased Mr. DeVries interest in the business.
Thirty six young people from this community will received diplomas from the two Marcus schools, 25 of them from Marcus Public and 11 from Holy Name.
F.B. Wilberding is now in the wholesale business, have secured distributorship for northwest Iowa from the Ouren Seed Company.
Mr. & Mrs. Warren Mayer of Orange City are the parents of a daughter.
The minimum price support rate for 1954 corn in commercial producing areas, which includes all of Iowa, will be $1.62 per bushel, which is 90 percent of parity as of February 15 and two cents higher than for the 1953 crop.

A.L. Pitts along time resident of the Marcus Community, passed away Wednesday afternoon at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mrs. Philip Dorr, 78, passed away Monday at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars after an illness of two weeks.
Gerald Meyer of Marcus won the portable television set offered by the Marcus money committee last Saturday night.
Robert Roberts and Son Insurance Agency here announces the sale of their business to L.P. Fitzgerald, operator of the Fitzgerald Agency.

Basketball fans in the Marcus are will have a chance to see one of the best girls basketball game in the nation when the All American Red Heads make their appearance in the community school gym.
Urban Wankum has been employed by the town as night marshal. He will replace Howard Geringer, who is returning to his former trade of painting and decorating.
Mr. & Mrs. Gary Rasmssen are parents of their first child, a son born Sat., March 21.

Ray Hanson has accepted the position of operator of the Marland Theatre, made vacant by the resignation of Chuck Geringer.
Paul Arndt, who has been with the Farmers State Bank in Marcus for th epast three and a half years, has resigned the post to accept a position with a Sioux City Bank.
Gary Sanow, a freshman at Dixie College at St. Gerorge, Utah won two events at a track meet there Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. Stasys Nenortas of Marcus were recently informed by the Department of the Air Force that their son, Viktor, has been selected for the Commander’s Merit List.
50 Years Ago -1974
Wade Berger a Marcus student, is proud of the letter which he received last week from Governor Robert Ray. A picture of Wade and the governor appeared in the national publication of the Children of the American Revolution.
Irven Porter passed away suddenly at the University Hospital in Minneapolis following an illness of one month.
Mr. & Mrs. W.J. Collins returned home Thursday after spending a two month vacation visiting with relatives and friends in Arizona and California.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Sue Peterson, Marcella Miller and Msgr. Behrens all have something in common they all suffer a broken arm and it happened to all three of them on the same day March 8.
Edward Springer passed away at his home in Cleghorn, Tuesday due to a heart condition.
Rory Means, Randy Kauggman, Chuck Peters, Bob Leavitt, Loren Mohning, Tim Dorr, Jim Stowater, Kim Carlson and Doug Roseen spent and enjoyable four day vacation at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
Hoover Oil Company announces that effective immediately they will be able to furnish the public with the popular gasahol.

A relay team of 8 runners will be running from the south edge of the Marcus Community School to the north edge of the district to help raise funds for the Post Prom Party which is sponsored by the Marcettes.
Gerald Carey, 78 former owner of Carey-Buck in Cherokee, passed away at his home due to a heart condition.
Jim & Bev Nielsen, Kim Carlson, Bill Schwarz, and Jan Pearson recently attended the Golden Sun Feeds Awards Banquet.
The Marcus Fair Board recently met at the IPS Community Room and decided to have free admission to the 1984 fair.
Ron Lauters, Ray Means, Rick Lauters, Alan Hoefling and Gary Hoefling, all of Marcus, went to Kingsley to wrestle in the Old Timers Tournament and all returned with trophies.
