The coldest weather has prvailed the last week known in this season since December 1876.
Saturday morning was the coldest day of the season. At 4 pm it registered 13 below.
George Pimperton sold eight hogs that tipped the scales at an average of 447 pounds; total weight 3,580.
Old Settler John Nelson passed away December 12 agter a lingering illness of several years.
110 Years Ago – 1913
The use of intoxicating liquors or of tabacco in any form by any student is prohibited. Violation of this rule will be punished by suspension or expulsion from school as many be necessary to stop the practive. Signed by D.S. Twogood, F.E. Loomis, E. Turner, Dw. Sims and J.W. Nield.
The business men of Marcus are enjoying an unusually large holiday trade exceeding their expectation.
Rudolf Zangger recently registered his farm with the county records, as “Highland Stock Farm.”
105 Years Ago -1918
Otto Krekow, son of Charles Krekow a well known farmer of this vicinity is the second Marcus soldier to arrive in the United States from service in France.
Mrs. T.C. Knox passed away in the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Sioux City on Sunday, December 22 after a short illness.
Carl Weink, 20 died at his home Wednesday morning December 11, after a few days illness of influenza.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Word has been received from the post office department at Washington to the effect that Mrs. Hope Niemann has been re-appointed postmistress at Marcus.
The first basketball game of the season will be played Thursday December 2 when the Marcus High School team will meet the Holy Name team.
The electric power plant at Paullina was destroyed by fire Monday morning. The blaze started form sparks from the exhaust pipe.
J.B. Boss is improving the appearance of his building by having a Kellastone front put on it.
95 Years Ago -1928
Dave Smith has accepted a position with the Standard Oil Company with head quarters in Africa and left last week for that place.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hodgrens are the parents of a daughter born December 4.
Several inches of snow fell in the second snow fall for the season here Sunday, the thermometer fell to zero Wednesday and was followed by rising temperatures.
Kenneth Fry departed Monday for Indiana where he plans to locate in business.

A wound in the chest inflicted by the accidental discharge of a shotgun Monday proved fata to John Dwyer, a Marcus farmer who died Wednesday, December 14.
Mr. and Mrs. Wesly Hirschman of near Fielding are the parents of a daughter born December 13 at the Correctionville hospital.
Members of the Better Marcus Club Monday evening at their annual meeting elected Rex Rosburg president of the organization for the coming year.
80 Years Ago – 1943
“Child Jesus” a cantata was presented by the pupils of the Marcus public high school on Tuesday evening in the high school auditorium.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 13 in the Nazareth Lutheran Church for Chris Nielsen of Meriden who passed away December 10 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Blanche Pitts and family entertained guests at dinner Sunday in honor of Robert Pitts and Vernon Hueser who will leave for service in a few days.
75 Years Ago -1948
The Marcus High School Eagles broke even the last week in basketball games, losing Friday evening to Quimby there and winning from Union Consolidated Wednesday night.
Arley Schmillen was painfully injured last Friday afternoon on his farm while hauling a load of cobs behind his tractor.
On December 20 the seniors of Holy Name High School presented a one act play entitled “No Room in the Inn” to a large crowd in the church parlors.
Several changes in postal rates become effective January 1: airmail 6 cents and ounce, third class 2 cents for first ounce and 1 cent for each additional ounce, special delivery is 15 cents.
70 Years Ago -1953
Charles Beaton of Marcus will graduate from Oklahoma A & M Tech on December 23.
Holy Name’s basketball team got back into the win column at Larrabee last Thursday evening with a 68-65 victory.
Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Gravenish of Meriden are parents of a son born Wednesday, December 9.

Dr. D.E. Haines a member of the chiropractic firm of Hobson and Haines was named president of the Marcus Commercial Club.
The home of Mr. & Mrs. Miller was awarded first place in the Marcus Commercial Club’s Christmas Decorating Contest.
The Meriden girls swamped the Marcus girls here last Friday night and the Marcus boys returned the favor in the end of the evening entertainment.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Rassel are the parents of a son born December 17.

The Eagles of the Marcus Community High School dropped two games this past week, while the girls won their only start.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Coburn rural Marcus will observe their golden wedding anniversary with an open house.
Connie Johnson of Cleghorn was the winner of the blanket given away Saturday evening at Nagles Apparel.
The Holy Name Wildcats coasted to a 89-47 victory over Early Sacred Heart on the home floor Friday night.
Oscar Door, 58 was burned and passed from his injuries at his farm home southwest of Marcus. Gas fumes ignited after fill his car with gas.
55 Years Ago -1968
Dr. G.R. Hobson of Marcus recently completed his 40th year in the practice of chiropractic’s.
Marcus along with a big share of the mid west was completely immobilized by a blizzard that dumped 14 inches of snow on the ground and then proceeded to pile up where it would do the most damages.
Major and Mrs. Charles Rosburg of Edwards, CA became parents of a son born Wednesday, December 18.
Leo Treinen has been selected to appear on the Teens Talk Up program on Channel 9 on February 9.
50 Years Ago -1973
Miss Mary Beth Alesch, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Loren Alesch of Marcus received her Medical Assistant cap at capping ceremonies held at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls on December 19.
Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Ricker announced the arrival of a baby girl born December 19.
For their “Energy Week Project” the Marcus fifth grade class undertook a car-occupants ratio survey of the vehicle’s passing on the street in front of the Intermediate Building.
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis W. Husman are the parents of a baby girl born December 12.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Phil Lebo, Meriden Cleghorn athletic director was injured Saturday afternoon in a car-pickup collision on Iowa 3, 2 miles east of Cleghorn.
Mrs. Clyde Conley 77 of Marcus died Thursday at Happy Siesta Retirement home of a long illness.
Michele Strub, Marcus is on of the 26 Buena Vista College students selected for the 1978-79 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”
The Marcus girls defeated the Whiting girls by 77-40 margin last Friday night.
40 Years Ago –1983
The Marcus Red Jackets sponsored a free dance at the Marcus Community Center in honor of their 25th year bowling anniversary. Music was by Gentle Persuasion.
Londa Stamer and Troy Stowater were united in marrage on Nov. 4 at Peace Lutheran Church.
Wetherell Appliance Store held a grand oening earlier this month.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Mrs. Donald McQueen of rural Washta continues to knit warm mittens, caps, and scarves for te annual Goodwill Shoe & Mitten Club.
Eleen Fitzgerald was honored for 50 years of active membership in the Marcus Woman’s Club.
Cleghorn Centennial committee is planning a soup supper for January 7.
