JohnGroute has purchased the carpet loom owned by E.C. Willett and will manufacture carpet at resonable rates.
David Hoover has disposed of his barbershop here to Ed Gerlach of Paullina. Ed does fine work and is welcome in our little city.

John Bird and sons have purchased an automobile.
Aurelia’s new hotel, The Lockin, was opened to the public this week. The landlord is J.J. Jungers, former Marcus resident. It is heated by steam; the water works and sewer drainage are in operation. It is built of brick and finished in hard wood inside.
110 Years Ago – 1913
A bulletin board has been placed in the depot which gives out information relatives to the time and the arrival of all belated trains.
Miss Martha Christ, who has been teaching the Simpson Bethel school, has been granted a first grade life certificate.
John Baertling returned Saturday from a nine month visit in Holmstad, Sweden.
The Marcus high school basketball team defeated Sanborn there by a score of 25-14.
Wm. Carmody of Madison, SD purchased the McNally farm three miles east of Marcus for $200 an acrea and will take possession March 1.

Ralph McConnell after serving six months in the United States Army with the 39th Coast Artilery was discharged and arrived home Thursday.
Mrs. Nelle Wolf who has been seriously ill for the past month with influenza is reported to be greatly improved.
The Joseph Imhoff family are moving from the country to town this week and will occupy their new home which they recently purchased.

The Lutheran congregation of Trinity church in Amherst Township will dedicate their new church building with services on Sunday.
The final round of the class games at Marcus high school will be held in the gym on Friday, December 14.
Mr. & Mrs. VF Sylvester former Marcus residents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with a reception which was attended by several Marcus people.
The electric plant at Paullina was distroyed by fire that started from sparks from teh exhaust pipe.
JB Boss is improving the appeareance of his building by having a Kellastone front put on.

Irma Treinen and Irma Lee were made happy Christmas, by being awarded prizes by Setterlee Drug Store.
The first poultry show to be held by the newly formed Cherokee County Poultry Association will be January 3 and 4 at the Armory in Cherokee.
Winifred Locke, Francis Brown, Arnold Alesch and Ralph Scott, students at Ames are spending the holidays in their homes.

Laurence Bass, son of Mr. & Mrs. WW Bass, received serious injuries in an automobile truck collision three miles east of LeMars on Highway 5 on Sunday afternoon.
Nina Jorgensen, daughter of Otto Jorgensen suffered serious injuries to her right foot in a fall at her home Monday evening.
Sparkling tunes and unusual costuming will feature the operatta The Early Bird Cathes the Worm to be presented by the Marcus public grade school.
After residing in Marcus 17 years, DR. JA Given recevtly sold his veterinary practice and equipment to Dr. GA Wiedemeier of Newell.

L.F. Quirin son of E.P. Quirin received his degree of Doctor of Medicine and also his commission as First Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps of the US Army at the mid-year graduation exercises of the State University of Iowa.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Lee Alesch a daughter Tuesday at the Sacred Heart.
The local fire department was called into action Friday morning when the windows of the office of Dr. Dubols were blown to the paving in an explosion caused from a leak in the Presto Acetylene gas tank that was in operation at the time.

Mr. & Mrs. W.P. Schmillen will observe their golden wedding anniversary December 13.
Funeral services for Elmer B. Goodrich 67, a former Marcus resident was held at Sioux City Monday.
Chuck Rosburg and Connie Dorr have been elected honorary co-captains of this years high school football team.

Mrs. Vernon Ebert is the new society editor and reporter on the Marcus News filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Mrs. Fred Hoover.

Vern Johnson, a tackle on the Marcus Eagles was named to the Maple Valley All Conference Football team.
The Eagles of the public school broke even on two basketball games the past week losing to Quimby and winning from Remsen public school.

W.T. Williams, 79 of Primghar died Wednesday, December 4. He was born in Marcus and spent much of his life in the community.
Mr. & Mrs. Adolph Brandt will observe their 50h wedding anniversary December 15 with an open house.
The new directory of the West Iowa Telephone Company contains a map of the town of Marcus to better enable users to locate residences.

Nile B. Eberly, 62 of Marcus died Friday, December 13 after a long illness.
Dennis Peavey of Fort Collins, CO was a December graduate of Colorado State University receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in accounting.
The kitchen of Joe Kramer home was heavily damaged Monday morning by a fire of unknown origin.
Four Marcus High School students have been chosen to play in the All Northwest Iowa Bank Festival. They are Jolene Ferrin, Laurie Treinen, Steve Cline and Steve Smith.

At its regular meeting Monday night the Board of Education voted 4-1 to close the Grand Meadow building as an elementary attendance center due to decreasing enrollments and increasing costs.
M. & Mrs. William Ott will be observing their 45th Wedding Anniversary December 19 with a dance at the Avalon ballroom in Remsen.
M.& Mrs Gerald Hohbach announced the arrival of a son born November 26.
Teh town of Cleghorn received a grant of $1136 for the State of Iowa for sewage treatments works.

LuAnn Dreke, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Max Drefke of rural Marcus was named “first place winner” by the Northwest Iowa Horse Show Association in the Western Pleaseure.
Jane Sokolowski, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Sokolowski has been accepted for enrollment at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls.
Council 3405 of the Knights of Columbus whose memebers are from Marcus, Remsen, and surrounding areas have presented the Cherokee Work Activity Center with a check for $451.06 raised through the tootsie roll drive.
Leslie Fischer, 66, passed away December 7 of an heart attack.
Dr. Steven Schachterle has just completed an in-depth clinical study on persona injury in Alanta, GA.
MMC Eagles lost to LeMars Gehlen 64-71.

Darrell Miller 57, of Marcus died Monday, December 14 at the Sioux City hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his widow and four sons.
Saturday evening about 50 friends and neighbors gathered in the new home of David and Lillian Kerr for a housewarming.
Marcus matmen battled to a 29-27 loss with Odebolt-Aurther last week.

Laurie Henke, a sophmore at Marcus High, has been selected as the Cherokee County representative in the Voice of Democracy speech contest.
K-Product has pledged $10,000 to the Marcus Community Center as as soon as the fun drive reaches $40,000.
Marcus Eagles beat Sergeant Cluff 69-47 on Friday, December 9.
