130 Years Ago -1893
Sleighing is very good here just now. Two-thirds of the farmers coming to town came in their bobsleds.
120 Years Ago -1903
Dr. Fry’s residence received a lot of damage from a fire on Monday afternoon. Furniture and clothing were ruined by smoke and fire. Will White had his hand injured while helping remove the piano. Morris Nagle cut his right hand so badly on a broken window that it required doctor’s service. The house was insured for $700. Due to the recent fire, Dr. Fry will occupy a residence just south of his former home. Hugo Naffsiger has just vacated this house.
Christ Hanson, living south of Marcus, was severely bitten on the hand by a hog he was butchering and he is now suffering form blood poising.
110 Years Ago – 1913
A bulletin board has been placed in the depot which gives out information relative to the time of the arrival of all belated trains.
Miss Martha Christ, teacher at Simpson Bethel, has been granted a first grade life certificate.
Marcus High School basketball team defeated Sanborn 25-14.
L.E. Board of Marcus last week purchased the JR Street Grocery in LeMars and will take possession December 8.
Nearly one hundred Marcus businessmen and citizends attended a banquet at the Idle Hour Theatre building Tuesday evening in celebration of the completion of the electric light system.

Lloyd Evans writes very cheerful letters from New Jersey where he is being cared for since his return from the battlefields of France.
Roy Imhoff and Peter Miller both local boys, found each other in a hospital back of the front lines in France.

Marcus businessmen are considering decorating the business section in keeping with the holiday spirit.
Carl Peterson’s barn, 9 horses and his 1923 crop of hogs were burned about 10:30 Sunday.
Harmison, Marcus Quarterback and Hazen, Marcus center were named on the all county football team.
The JW Holmes farm has recently been named the “Elm Lane Farm.”

Franck Garvin and Loretta Garvin departed for Pasadena, CA to spend the winter.
Dr. Ralph Dubois and Miss Eve Lake of Gaza were married December 1.
Several inches of snow fell in the second snowfall of the season here Sunday. The thermometer fell to 0.

Laurence Bass received serious injuries in an auto-truck collision three miles east of LeMars on Highway 5 Sunday afternoon.
LW Barnes is driving a new Pontiac this week.
Gus Hadel left for New York City where he will board the SS Washington to Europe to visit his former home in Poland.
Hot shot specials this week: coffee 26 cents a pund, bacon 29 cents a pound; sugar an 100 pound bag $4.89; and soap.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Mr. & Mrs. Garvin received word December 9 that their son, Jimmie, is reported missing in action in Germany since November 29.
Wesley Geringer treated his kindergarten-first grade to ice cream on December 1st to help celebrate his birthday.
Miss Anna Schnoes of Minneapolis spent Sunday and Monday with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Schnoes. Anna is employed in a defense plant there.

Mr. & Mrs. WP Schmillen will observe their golden wedding anniversary Monday, December 13, with an open house at their home.
The first grade class helped Ruth Wilkens celebrate her birthday on December 7th.
Joe Cronin, Leo Schnoes, Jerry Meylor, and Ray List spent a weekend in Chicago attending the International Livestock Show.

Vernon Ebert is now stationed at Darmstadt, Germany, where he is a clerk in Headquarters Battery.
Joan Wilberding and Richard Barry are planning their wedding December 31.
Vera Kestel of Omaha and Rosemary Nacke of Council Bluffs spent the weekend in their parental homes.

John (Bud) Peterson, about 45, was killed at Santa Monica, CA. He was getting out of his car when he was hit by another vehicle. He is survived by his wife and four children.
93% of the votes cast in the nine area involved in the school reorganization plan approved the plan.
Holy Name Wildcats won tow games, beating Alton there and spoiling Cherokee IC’s homecoming with Frangenberg and Mickey McClintock having the hot hand.

Mr. & Mrs. John Neir will leave December 21 for missionary duty in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong on the west coast of Asia.
Chels Metcalf, veteran Marcus barber, will hang up his clipper and scissors in his shop under the sidewalk and retire with his wife to a home in Paullina.
John Coburn was presented a certificate of award by the Archer Petroleum Corp. of Omaha for his top sales in the county.

Mrs. Rachel Addy underwent surgery Monday for the repair of a fractured leg resulting from a fall.
The Marcus Division of MoorMan Mfg. Co. will hold an open house at their new quarters at the edge of Marcus on Highway 143 on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
Mrs. Mabel Beaton, 80, passed away November 2. She is survived by two daughters and three sons.
50 Years Ago -1973
The Mt. Pleasant Sunday School children will bring mittens and stocking caps for the Christmas tree which will be sent to needy children.
Marcus Eagles deafeated Grandville 76-50 with Dave Hogue scoring 26 points and Brian Gates 16.
A free movie will be held for all good little girls and boys on Wednesday night Dec. 12 and 19. Santa will be present to hand out candy.
45 Years Ago – 1978
The Lions club of Marcus purchased new Christmas decorations for the city.
Members of the Children’s Theatre gave their production of “The Wizard of OZ” directed by Mavis Diment.
40 Years Ago –1983
Langdon and Mary Polson, representing the Easter Star, presented a check of $150 to the Marcus Fire Department.
Paul & Jane Busch announce the arrival of Elizabeth Ann on November 25, 1983.
Eaglettes defeated the stubborn LeMars Gehlen girls 74-65 led by Donna Dreckman’s 41 points and Kim Moats’ excellent play in the guard court.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Jim Pearson announced the opening of his new business. J&R Enterprises, in the former Grey’s Garage Building.
Renea Ogren of Marcus won first place in the professional division of the Iowa Make It Yourself With Wool Contest.
