P.N. Brown purchased the William Wirt place adjoining the fair grounds.
P.B. Nelson sold two lumber wagons, one Deering bindner, one corn planter, one sulky corn plow, and one harrow to Joseph Stratton who just purchased a fine farm in Sheridan Township.
120 Years Ago -1903
The old gentleman Hoxsie fell from the roof of a barn, a distance of 14 feet at M.Y. Ames farm recentl. Hwas badly shaken up but no broken bones.
The Mracus Mill has been fitted with a set of electric bells which will save many steps for the workman.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Thomas Patton, well known lumberyard dealer died Sunday evening at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City.
It is estimated that the farm machinery sold this year by the three Marcus dealers amounted to more than $75,000.
For the first time in history, Plymouth County, by the act of its own citizens refused to grant a legal permit for saloons to operate in the county.

Paul Carey left Monday for Lyton where he will accept a position as manager of a co-operative store.
The Henry Niemann Hardware store was closed last week for several days because of the illness of Mrs. Niemann.
A haevy mail was received form France this week at the local post office, and nearly every family who had relatives in the Armed Forces received a letter.
Ethel Miller and Lovel Simons were married in the home of her parents on Decmber 4.
L.E. Board of Marcus purchased the J.R. Grocery store in LeMars and will take possession December 8.

The Marcus High School football team closed the season last Friday with a well-earned victory over Washta High School.
Dr. C.W. Ihle is driving a new 1924 model Oakland Coupe.

The Farmers State Bank, a new financial institution in Marcus opened its doors December 6.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Alesch December 1 a daughter.
Several inches of snow fellin the second snowfall of the season here Sunday. The thermometer fell to zero Wednesday.
85 Years Ago -1938
Urging new uses for surplus farm products, State Representative Gustave Alesch of Marcus was one of the principal speakers at the National Congress of Industry and Raw Materials held in Sioux City last week.
Crushed against a garage after being carried 60 feet when he cranked his automobile while in gear, George L. McCandless, commercial instructor at the Marcus High School died of his injuries in the LeMars hospital Saturday.
Flames originating on the second floor completely destroyed the big store building at Fielding Wednesday, November 23. Much of the stock and furniture in the building was removed before the flames reached the first floor.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Fireman from four departments responded to an alarm early Saturday night from the Simonsen Brothers Mill near Quimby but the fire which caused small damage was extinguished before they arrived.
Oscal Heline, prominent farmer of Marcus will be featured on a broad cast to be presented by radion station WLS of Chicago at noon Friday, December 17.
Chris Nielsen, 58 of Meriden passed away December 10 after a brief illness of 16 days.
75 Years Ago -1948
The freezing rain and sleet of last Friday night and Saturday did an estimated $5,000 worth of damage to the lines of the West Iowa Telephone Company in the Marcus and Remsen area.
A passenger on Saturday noon’s westbound Illinois Central passenger train escaped death by about 6 inches when subnormal youths fired a .22 rifle at the train near the Country Club at Cherokee.
70 Years Ago -1953
The Marcus Eagles won two more games the past week to remain undefeated in the young basketball season. The girls Tuesday evening at Pierson helped the Eagles spoil that school’s homecoming by winning their first game of the season.
The Kimber Variety is advertising their grand opening in this week’s issue of the News, The opening will be this Saturday.

Karen Wiedemier, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G.A. Wiedemeir of Marcus is a member of the cast of “The Tale of a Soldier” which is bring produced by the drama department of the Universality of Iowa in Iowa City.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hueser on Wednesday, November 19.
Alice Hobson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Hobson and Louella Johnson daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Johnson of Cleghorn performed in a piano rectal at the Art Center in Sioux City on Monday evening.

President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into office Friday afternoon following the assassination of country’s 35th president, John F. Kennedy.
The Marcus Fire Department has set Saturday, December 7 as the date of its open house at the new community fire station.
Mr. & Mrs. Ann Miller daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Miller was graduated from ISU, Ames on Saturday, November 23 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education.

Mrs. Mabel Beaton, 80 passed away Tuesday, November 26 at FVH in LeMars after a long illness.
Mrs. Rachel Addy underwent surgery Monday for the repair of a fractured leg resulting from a fall in the home of her daughter, Wednesday afternoon of last week.
The Marcus wrestling team triumphed for the second time this year by smashing the defending champs of Northeast Iowa, West Sioux of Hawarden by a decisive margin of 28 to 13 on Thanksgiving Eve.
50 Years Ago -1973
Brad Miller of Sand Seed Service has been recently returned from a Soybean Conference held at Munich, Germany.
Mrs. Francis Wendt won the gift given away at Nagles Apparel Saturday night.

Farmers State Bank of Marcus extends a cordial invitation to their customers and friends at their 50th anniversary and open house to be held on December 8 & 9.
The Lions club will be giving away a Quaser color television set on December 23 to the person with the winning ticket.
