MMCRU to participate in Special Olympics
Here at MMCRU we have our special education students who are getting to participate in something called the Special Olympics. The students that participate in the Special Olympics are going to be participating in the bowling event in October. The amount of students that are involved are excited that they get to participate in events that other high school students are usually a part of. It takes the students a lot of time by practicing a lot in the month of September for the bowling event.
Mrs. Rolling is the special education teacher at MMCRU. It is her third year as the delegate for the special olympics. She organizes the practices and events for MMCRU High School. Alongside Mrs. Roling, the paraprofessionals take the time to make sure the students get to the bowling alley in Remsen, Iowa to practice. The bowling practices for the MMCRU students are held at Maple Lanes and the actual event is held in Sioux City, Iowa. From the MMCRU High School there are nine students who will participate in the bowling event, but in the state of Iowa there are at least or about two hundred students that participate.
The students that go to MMCRU put a lot of time and effort into preparing themselves for the event. In the month of September, they have four practices and those practices are an hour long to get any hiccups out of the way. When the day of the bowling event occurs, the event lasts five hours.
One of the paraprofessionals puts a lot of time into helping with the bowling part of the special olympics. Mrs. Laura Petersen has been helping out with the special olympics for two years at MMCRU High School. The basketball event occurs in March while the track and field takes place in April or May. There are other events the students are involved in other than just bowling, basketball, track and field.
The MMCRU High school students love all the events that they participate in and are proud of their accomplishments. There are hundreds of people that go to the event, but most of the people are the families of the students that are participating in the special olympics.
